in our country the voice of reason can not be heard as the decision makers , stakeholders and politics are so polarized through tribalism and other mud slinging propaganda that the truth and common sense have become irrelevant . the ministry of agric is notorious for the the fact that the minister and chief director there are the most corrupt callous characters in the govt today. every nation that has achieved development has put in checks and balances that rectify mistakes or evil tendencies , our leaders first make sure these checks and balances are eliminated whether by declaring president for life or one party states like nkrumah did or by putting strange immunity or indemnity clauses in the constitution like rawlings did. if there is no accountability there can be responsibility and a vicious circle of corruption , disunity and open crimes are committed but none of this ruling oligarchy will ever be made to pay for their atrocities. our country and her citizens produce tens of billions but poverty is the daily lot of most of our citizens as the system of divide and rule has been perfected , our gold and other natural resources leave the country but no a single dollar comes back to benefit our people , our diaspora of over 10 to 15 million is not involved in development rather when they come they are financially raped by all from their own relatives with ridiculous demands for electronic gadgets and school fees to the state organized mafia institutions with tribally biased evil agendas . a nation not unified or focused on matters of national importance are doomed to failure . the quiet majority are being exploited and raped on a daily basis but due to the govt sponsored propaganda and lies are unable to see things clearly and act . yes we have a hopeless depressing future ahead due to our own laziness , non action and cowardice of thought. nobody is interested in investigating the truth for themselves or even questioning the most obvious crimes. jj has proclaimed k4 a corrupt individual yet after superpowers investigated they rewarded him by appointing him special envoy , jj will not go to jail for his false declaration rather in the madness and with his tribal hegemony chauvinistic support will be declared a hero and not for inciting hatred against another leader who will most likely end up in a pool of blood like mills .the tragedy is far from over as mahama and his lies only continue this trend , mr all talk and no action is busy taking us on another jolly ride to despair and hopelessness . the only solution is a cleansing war or revolution which will ensure that the country is divided up so we all get a fresh start , no point in fixing whats too broken to repair

There is an article on Yahoo about African leaders meeting and trying to stem the violence in South Sudan. It has a picture of Uhuru Kenyatta, Kiir, and Desalgen, presidents of Kenya, South Sudan and Ethiopia respectively. I would entreat every African to go and read the comments section under the article, most especially our so called leaders and what some lesser human souls think of them, all because of our inability to do right by our people. We are far better than the portrayal of the West, and it's about time we acted as such.

Okofo,
You make a lot of sense but your argument that literacy causes poverty is not valid. You miight argue that literacy makes for a more efficient corruption, but it does not create corruption. Our very customs and moral values are tainted with corruption at it very basic fiber.
Take for instance the case of illegal miners.Aren't there elders and chiefs in those villages where the farms are being destroyed? What prevents these grassroot leaders from confronting the polluters? The local leaders even protect them and give tip offs about police raids to them in advance. Why?.......because the bigger the polluter the more bribes they can pay. I am not advocating violence... that would be unlawful, but cooperation between the local people and police would be key in keeping some of these issues in check.
Our inability to recognize and confront bribery and corruption is one of the real reasons why we will continue to wallow in poverty in the midst of plenty. If you think I'm lying, just do a simple experiment: Go to a chapel or mosque or any other religious gathering, leave your wallet containing a few cedis in several localities in Ghana, ranging from rural to urban and find out what percentage of times you will have your wallet returned to you intact......
The other reason why we will remain poor is the lack of innovation in our education. We fail to link our education to innovation and solving local problems. We have grand ideas about how mechanisms work in other societies, but we dont think about how knowledge in our areas of expertise could be applied to solving our local problems.
We have no difficulty thinking about how to order canned tomatoes but no ideas about how to preserve the tons of tomatoes produced by poor farmers at Akumadan. We do not realise how good roads could actually save us the billions of dollar we spend in buying rice from other countries, considering the huge potential we have for higher-quality rice production and efficient distribution.
Until we realise our own potential and wake up, our country's future will remain bleak.

Kofi, the writer was not categorical that literacy causes poverty. Rather he sought to make the point that our intellectuals are raping the state of her resources when they should be applying their intellect for the good of the people. Apart from that, I think you gave a perfect diagnosis of our problems as a country.
What I want to add is that, until we scrap the chieftaincy institution, we will never progress the way we should because I believe that institution is a constant reminder of our tribes and ethnicity. Most Ghanaians fail to see the truth and act accordingly because of our tribal leanings and differences. Tribalism influences the way we think, act, elect our leaders, appoint and employ people and sadly the way we judge people. If we all saw ourselves as Ghanaians first, I'm sure we will demand the right things from our leaders. Our smart politicians today have used our tribal differences to put a wool over our eyes so we pretend to see everything they do as okay. I used to cherish my tribe but lately I have realized it is not worth it when I see so much poverty around me.

The people/folks running Ghana or want to run Ghana do not fit this definition, Look at the calibre of people in parliament(our law and policy makers)and you tell me if they are intellectuals. They do not have the highly developed ability to think, reason and understand especially with combination of wide knowledge.

The evidence is there for all to see: the African is totally incompetent, and will bring up the rear in the war of the races forever.
After insulting me, MARK MY WORDS: ECG will never produce uninterrupted power again UNLESS all the equipment are repeatedly replaced as a strategy and are always brand-spanking new. Once the smallest parts age, we will be held hostage, and they will call for increases in tariffs. WHY? Because they (or perhaps we) have no clue or stomach for technical things. Yes, we are fabulous footballers but we are very poor "engineers and mathematicians and technicians">
The universities are mostly waste pipes who will continue to blow hot air. Like Legon announcing grandly that henceforth they are going to be a RESEARCH UNIVERSITY whatever that means...when BRRI, that Kwabenya nuclear warreva, CSIR etc. have been involved in so-called research and have wasted hundreds of millions of dollars with very little to show.
In that sense the education elites are next to the so-called men of God for Ghana and Africa's predicament.

FYMI is the Fourth Year Military Interventiion. This should be a 90 day exercise by the military before elections,in which all corrupt politicians and Government officials will be lined up at Teshie Nungua firing range and executed. The BLACKMAN is too corrupt and too greedy. If this House Cleaning is done every four years by the military, there will be dramatic change.

A country is determined by geographical factors like language, colour and culture. On the contrary,a Nation is determined by collective construction for the common good of its citizens. That is what we are lacking in Africa today, the sense of building a great Nation and patriotism. We are still behaving like the olden days where tribalism is more important than nationalism. At the end of the day, political parties and elections are influenced by tribalism but not proper policies and that is the end results of creating lazy intellectuals and administrators. Our politicians and intellectuals do not have problem copying the best policies in the world to build a very strong nation but they are happy to leave us in this poor state.I wish all of you a Happy New Year.

IF HE WAS SCIENTIFIC IN HIS OBSERVATIONS, HE WILL KNOW THAT NO SUCH COMMENT IS VALID WITHOUT A COMPREHENSIVE OBJECTIVE/QUALITATIVE RESEARCH TO BACK IT UP.
IS HE SERIOUSLY SAYING IT IS BAD THAT GHANA IS PRODUCING SOME 'INTELLECTUALS'? IF SO, THAN HE IS WORSE THAN A SINGLE ONE OF THE SO-CALLED INTELLECTUALS HE CRITICISES.
HE MUST SHUT UP IF HE HAS NOTHING BETTER TO SAY.

We're polarized as a nation coz we hate to give credit to those trying to steer us straight. For any good thoughts thrown out in public, there're the naysayers who never contribute but fault and indeed convince others to think likewise. We lack the morals to stand up for the truth. All we care about is the 'dough', how fat our stomachs are and the glory of being seen as rich. The only thing we can improvise is, how to milk the state and pretend it's all good
