The west does not want any country in the developing world to have energy sufficiency and come to the fore the west's trouble with Iran over her nuclear facilities which were constructed and equip by Russia. Whiles the U.S. is training her post graduate medical students in Cuba in Ghana a medical graduate from Cuba has to write examination before his or her degree is accepted. We also have a civil and public service who are of the view that Ghana is a property of the west.

Let's stop the blame game in Africa. We may one day blame the sun for making us black. In Ghana we have people who think the US cannot be trusted yet the US, like any good country must fight for its own interest while doing good around the globe. For those who are apt to criticize the US they should find any country that has done more for the world’s poor and or helping the wounded and the dead after global catastrophes than the US? Ghanaians who engaged in the 1966 coup chose bribery over wisdom after all Jesus was met with the same fate at the hands of Judas.
The Chinese continue to gobble up African lands, natural and mineral resource with devastating results to each nation (look at their own air quality issues) they've been able to buy with their money. The Russians are back with their own survival and an unrepentant leader in Putin who cares about Russia and his own personal power than the plight of Africans. The Middle East is made up of rich nations too unimaginative to understand that if all the Arab nations did well together, they may reduce bloodshed within their midst.
But in Africa we continue to sell everything God gave us for a fraction of what they are worth then look to buying things we do not need. When we run out of money because of our foolish leaders we put our hands and tin cup out for the developed nations to put money in for us to eat. That is our pattern of approach to self development. Can any Ghanaian official explain why Chinese are in Ghana engaged in illegal mining termed "galamsey"? If the national government along with local governments believes there are abundant deposits of precious minerals why not invest and make these sources of work for Ghanaians? Do we need China or anyone to help us dig and go into deep mines? In South Africa it was the Africans who were the majority mine laborers. What is the excuse in Ghana?

Outside of the end of cold war politics, the decline of Russian interest in Africa is a natural development. Simply put:
Firstly, Russia doesn't have the cash to make meaningful investments in a continent a whole Middle East away from it. It doesn't have the cash to invest even in its own Far East provinces.
Secondly, Russia and Africa are direct competitors -- in gold and diamonds, in bulk metals and
minerals, and petroleum, which are underinvested in both geopolitical regions.
Thirdly, Africa has nothing else to export that Russians want, unlike Europeans who like tropical produce like chocolate and bananas etc. While Russia itself exports (obsolete) weaponry to whomever has the ready money to pay for them, Africa doesn't have the means to pay.
Lastly, unlike the EU or Japan, Russia does not engage in "humanitarian" efforts that lack a clear strategic benefit to themselves. Russians have no interest in building African hospitals or water pumps, or providing mosquito netting, or any other charity that passes for "soft" influence. They have no need to -- impoverished Africans will never migrate en masse to that country.
The Soviet interest in the continent, unenthusiastic as it was, is over. It's time to move on in cultivating new ones.
