Robert Mensah was paid One thousand Cedis in 1971 for transferring to Kotoko. The amount was unbelievable. Robert was indiscipline for most of the season and very selective in matches. It gave the opportunity for Essel Mensah, who was formerly called Robert Mensah to be the reliable goalkeeper during the league season for Kumasi Asante Kotoko. After winning the African Cup, a great bonus was paid to all players and those who remember will recall that philanthropists in Kumasi populace gave generously to all, including goalkeeping number one. Today we are all seeing Prince Boateng being selective in matches incurring the wrath of fans. Robert was highly respected for his goalkeeping skills and Kotoko was acquiesced into submission to accept any requests. (Out of respect for the late Mensah, I refused the words tantrums and extortion). In short Robert Mensah was handsomely rewarded at the time and Kotoko honored their agreement. Robert wanted VW car, which was not part of the agreement and BK Edusei promised him to relocate to Kumasi before Richman BK buy him the car. His demise in Akpeteshie bar ended his relocation.

Non-Asante-Akyems or whatever you call yourself, you are despicable and a scum. We are here commiserating on the demise of a great son of Ghana and a great footballer and all you can contribute from your XYY Chromosome degenerate brain is a vitriol and tribal diatribe. How did Kotoko kill him? Do you know how dearly Robert was loved by Kotoko fans, Asantes, the team and indeed all Ghanaians? The nation loved so much and we are still aggrieved when we talk about him. Between him and the Master Legend, Baba Yara, Kumasi Asante Kotoko, is still in mourning because they were our Princes. May His Soul and that of Baba Yara rest in eternally perfect peace!!

I tip my hat off to the author of this article. Well done. It is rare to see a solid narrative on this website like this one. Robert Mensah was an awesome goalie. I remember him from back in his hey day at Mysterious Dwarfs. He made his debut against Sekondi Hassacas. As a child, I always wished I would be like him in the goal posts. He was so good, most opponents spread falsities about him and his trademark cap. There were rumors about some juju beneath his cap. Typical Ghanaian fallacy. May he continue to Rest In Peace.

Robert Mensah joined Kotoko from Cape Coast Mysterious Dwarfs in 1969 after he inspired the Abontua Abontua Boys to thrash Kumasi Asante Kotoko 5-0 in 1968 at the famous Siwudu Park, incidentally now named after him. Interestingly, that was the time Kotoko had returned from a training tour abroad.

When Robert Mensah joined Fabulous, a philanthropist gave him a room to stay in Amakom. It was a temporal abode. He never permanently stayed in Kumasi. The African Number One goalkeeper was junketing back and forth from Tema to Kumasi. He only trained with Kotoko on Fridays before match on Sunday. As a kid, we will always trot to Kotoko training grounds to watch him but it was always disappointing. Very lackadaisical. However, Come Sunday when the match is on......HIS full antics will be on display. Very remarkable. Goalkeeper number one defy physics as he will let the ball pass him before diving to catch the ball. You may disagree but this is eyewitness account of goalkeeper number one prowess in goalpost.

I don't know if the then Community 7 last trotro Station is at where it was.
So ask of the last trotro Station in the early 1970's when coming from Comm 4.(is not far from the curve you negotiate between Comm 4 Ownership To reach Comm 7.It's about 130 ,_150 yards straight in front of you from curve to the station, and from the station,
Walk some few yards to the junction ahead of you.Turn right at the junction and walk some few yards and turn again on the first junction on your left. You will be in a roundtable. At this point, you're walking towards Comm 7 Park .Step to the right hand lane at the end of the roundabout and go ahead of you.
Now you have on your right-hand side 2 lines of buildings horizontal. The short story buildings before the Story buildings that line the Park .So find CREDO bar in short story buildings.I think it's the 2nd or the 3 building from the lane you walking on to your right-hand side.
It was just something like a big Kiosk in front of the house maybe between the hedges.
I don't think the kiosk is still there but anyone who has lived in the area around 1970 can show you the exact building. Good luck.

You are perfectly right, Robert Mensah was unfortunately stabbed at a drinking spot called CREDO in Tema, Comm 7 by an idiot called Isaac Melfa. The initial radio announcement by GBC 2 at the time said he was stabbed with a knife but it was later established that he was stabbed with a broken bottle. He was sent to the Tema General Hospital and I believe they experienced a black out and so by 2:30 am of Nov 2 he was pronounced dead. How sad! I was a strong Kotoko supporter at the time, and I bet you, though a young man at the time I wept like a kid. I hate that memory.

MAy his soul rest in peace! The moral of the story is simple: The Asantes have always failed to live their side of any bargains! Okomfo Anokye was brutally murdered after he had served the Asantes and asked permission to go back to Denkyira to fulful his promise - A deal broken by Asantes!
Former President Kuffour failed to support Akuffo Addo when he stepped down as promised but rather tired in vain to hand the baton to his Asante brother Alan Kyeremanteng!
When the Golden stool had been recaptured by the Juaben hene, the Asantes accused him of stealing some of the Gold nuggets and pursued him to Akim where he sought refuge! Asantes historically are ungreatful people who will never change! Ghana is one country so we should accomodate them but we should also rememeber how they are as a people!!

Andy, thanks for restraining yourself. But I want you to tell me that the issues I raised are not facts but lies. You can argue with my conclusions but if the facts are of the truth, would u blame me for my conclusions? Komfo Anokye was murdered in cold blood was he not? Kuffour prefered Alan Cash to Akoffo addo even though he was far lower in the packing order. Kenedy Agyepong confirms that his friendship with Kuffour ended becos of that disagreement! Everyone knows Robert Mensah died after a fight over a woman but Ghanaians always like to romantisize their heroes and eulogise them as if they were gods! But the fact still remains that Kotoko failed to honor their promise to Robert Mensah. Will you also argue the Juaben story? If so Id ask you to refer to your Asante history. Let me just add one... Kutu Acheampong failed to give Daniel Kotey Poison a house as promsed and to this date DK poison is still waiting. Andy Quao, I am not sure if you have your facts right, there was a Kotoko Board Chairman a Lebanese business man in Kumasi who was the one Robert Mensah really listened to in times of disagreements or crisis in Kotoko. He was Ibrahim Mourkazel, I don't know if I have the name right, but Mourkazel was so popular in Kumasi he wielded so much power.
He was the one who told Robert Mensah, to go back into the post when Robert Mensah out of anger walked out of the post when a penalty was awarded against Kotoko in Kinsasha(DRC) in their match with TP Englebert in 1970. The missed penalty kick that landed Tsinabu in jail on the orders of Prez Mobutu. Please check your facts. I stand by my statements.

It was a normal argument at AKPETESHI BAR that Robert pushed him(Melfah) over a hedge, from where he,Melfah, fell he picked a broken castoil bottle, stood behind the hedges and as Robert was about to come out he was attacked. ISAAC MELFAH died in Lagos,Nigeria after his prison term, he was knocked by an oncoming truck at COCONUT.

Kotoko did revenge by beating Dwarfs 6-0. The next big story was when Hearts met Kotoko in Accra and it was soccer Prince Amartey who during a penalty kick told Robert where he will put the ball and he did just that and Robert clapped for him for two minutes. The newspapers once again captured it the next day ' The clapping Robert Mensah' Yes I have Some of the memorable Robert Mensah pictures and some of the memorable matches. May he rest in peace.

Isaac Melfah was tried for the murder of Robert Mensah in 1972. The Court convicted him of manslaughter though as the prosecution was unable to prove Melfah's intent to commit murder. Thus the court was of the view that Melfah had killed Robert (a fact Melfah did not dispute) but that it was in the heat of the moment
The prosecution had claimed that Melfah had attacked Robert's friend, Robert had intervened and had beaten Melfah. Melfah had then gone in to the Credo Bar, broken a bottle and had confronted Robert for a second time. There was a tussle and Melfah killed him
In Melfah's defense the argument was that although Melfah had got the bottle the witnesses say he had been attacked for a second time by Robert. Thus both were of some culpability. Robert should have walked from the scene having defended his friend and Melfah should have walked having realized Robert was more powerful than him
The case was appealed and the Appeal court slashed the sentence from about 8 years to 41/2 years on the grounds that given the circumstances the sentence was too harsh and that it was obvious the High Court had been swayed by Robert's popularity in handing down a sentence of 8 years for the offence.

I WAS IN SECONDARY SCHOOL FORM TWO WHEN HE DIED. I WAS A LOVER OF FOOTBALL AND SO FOLLOWED NANABANYIN's historic exploits with Dwarfs and Kotoko. I still Remember in my minds eye how he terrorized great attackers of the late sixties and early 70'S Including Kalala and Tsinabu of Englebert. I saw him in action at Siwdu Park and Winneba where Dwarfs had gone to play Simpa Odebikese in a match. Indeed it was in 1969 that he was for the first time voted Africa's number one goalkeeper after Black Stars lost to Sudan in the Africa Nations Cup final. In 1970 Ibrahim Sunday captain of Kotoko was voted the best player in Africa after Kotoko's Africa Cup Victory for the first time. In that year Robert was voted the second best player in Africa after Sunday, the midfield dynamo and hence still the best keeper in Africa. TO date ROBERT has no equal in the post in Ghana and probably Africa in my scientific opinion. MAY HE REST IN PEACE

"Indeed, the climax of Robert Mensah’s master class emerged when in the dying minutes of this crunch grand finale after the Congolese have held Asante Kotoko to a goalless draw in first leg encounter at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi when he saved a penalty struck by the great Kalala of Englebert.
The Porcupine Warriors emerged victorious in the battle on an away-goal advantage to lift the 1970 edition of the Africa Clubs Championship"

He went back to the post with out-stretch hands and Kabobo shot over the ball. Interestingly, Robert Mensah is the worst goalkeeper for the saving penalty kicks. Actually the penalty was taken by Tsinabu and not Kabobo. Before the kick, the Congolese complained of the black and white cap of Robert. In fact Robert removed the cap and placed it on the back of the goal post and beckoned Tsinabu to make the kick. His imposing personality in goal was enough to scare any player and thus Tsinabu kicked the ball miles over the bar to give Kotoko the victory. I watched every game that Robert played in Kumasi including all the African Club championship games. Robert was a fantastic goalkeeper and Ghana is yet to find a goalkeeper his quality to replace. But I must caution all those folks who are making those false, petty, and childish accusations against Kotoko and Asantes. Such people have no facts to base on. It's sad to make this statement against Robert though. He had an unfortunate human weakness of drinking. He also had an attitude towards authority that was not welcoming. Robert drank a lot even in Kumasi and sometimes on match days. He made his popularity eat into his head and had a large following of women and drinks. The Kotoko executives had difficulty restraining him. He got everything that was enshrined in his contract and even more. I am sorry to say this but Robert had some disciplinary issues. He nearly lost his number one spot to Ezel Mensah because of that. Kumasi and the whole of Ghana loved him so much. That is why to date, no person in Ghana has been accorded the type of respect he received during his funeral and burial. Aspiring soccer stars and celebrities in Ghana must take a cue from his untimely death. May his sould rest in perfect peace. He was indeed my admirer.

The recent football contest between Ghana’s Black Meteors and the Nigerian Dream team was, in a way, a throwback to Ghana’s battles with the Congo, especially in the early seventies. There were allegations of substandard accommodation, of refereeing ineptitude and hints of juju. Back then, however, the choice was not between a three star hotel and a four star one. It was between having a bed or just a table, as Asante Kotoko found out in the second leg of the final of the 1970 African Club Championship in Kinshasa against Tout Puissant Englebert.
TP Englebert had secured a 1-1 draw with Asante Kotoko in Kumasi and with no away-goal-rule at the time, needed to win the second leg outright to win the trophy. Asante Kotoko arrived in Kinshasa and were shocked to realize, that the accommodation reserved for them was a classroom block. There were armed soldiers loitering in the vicinity but they were not there for the protection of the players. They were there to ensure the team did not attempt to move away to another accommodation but would sleep on the tables and chairs in the classrooms and receive their fair share of mosquito bites. The Congolese are yet to confirm whether the mosquito-filled swamp at the back of the classroom was purpose-built for the benefit of Kotoko.
Asante Kotoko were led on the day of the match by Sunday Ibrahim and the team featured such great players like Malik Jabir, Abukari Gariba, Yaw Sam and Osei Kofi but the star of the side was undoubtedly, the enigmatic giant of a goalkeeper, Robert Mensah. Those who saw him in action still swear that Robert is the best goalkeeper they ever saw. His personal charisma and the fact that he died so young may yet have clouded people’s judgement to a degree but from all accounts, he was a genius in the post. Like all truly gifted people, however, he had his flaws and for Robert, this happened to be indiscipline. In fact, he was stabbed to death in “Credo” akpeteshie bar in Tema on a day when his team mates were in camp in Kumasi preparing for a continental game.
Asante Kotoko took the lead early in the game through “goal na mafefe” Abukari Gariba. Congolese strongman Kalala equalized before Englebert conceded a second goal, scored by Malik Jabir. When the referee whistled for a rather dubious penalty for Englebert in the last few minutes, with the score at 2-1, Coach Aggrey Fynn and other Kotoko officials decided to call their players off the pitch in protest against the blatant attempt at robbery. They protested vehemently to no avail until, to the surprise of all and sundry, Robert went up to the officials and pleaded with them to allow the game to go ahead. If there was any justice in the world, he said, it would not be beyond the realms of possibility for him, Robert, to save the day. When the officials finally gave in, Robert Mensah ran to the goalpost, took off his famous white cap and hit the cross bar and the two side posts with it. He put his cap back on, stood on the goal line, opened his arms wide and beckoned to Kakoko, the Congolese penalty expert, to shoot.
There had been simmering rumours about Robert Mensah’s cap and what it did or did not contain but things came to a head once he had started brandishing it as a “weapon” in the heat of battle. The Congolese complained to the referee about “the goalkeeper’s cap” and he ordered Robert to remove his cap before the penalty kick. There was a “volcanic eruption”. Robert Mensah was not about to remove his cap. That cap, a gift from his grandfather, a Cape Coast fetish priest, before he solemnly passed away, and which embodied the glorious spirits of his illustrious ancestors long gone was not about to be cast aside. That cap, his cherished companion in great battles for both Asante Kotoko and the Black Stars in countries far and wide without even the slightest hint of a complaint from anybody was not about to be cast aside at this crucial moment in the final of Africa’s premier club competition. Robert Mensah walked out of the goalpost while the referee shamelessly threatened to end the game in favour of Englebert.
The Asante Kotoko officials who only a short while earlier had been coerced by Robert to allow the game to on, now wished the game over and done with and quietly hoped the giant would change his mind. But who was going to be brave enough to say that to an angry Robert? Soon, an elderly man was seen scuttling down from the directors’ box and engaged in verbal exchanges with riffle-wielding solders who were trying to stop him from entering the pitch. He was the Kotoko president of the time, I.K. Moukerzel. He finally made it unto the pitch, sat by Robert and asked the angry goalkeeper to look him in the eye.
“Robert” he said “you know and I know, that we are being robbed here. But are we going to run away? No! Because that is not the Asante Kotoko way. If need be Robert, we should lose this cup fighting to the very last man.........”
Whether Robert was touched by this message or that he suddenly realized he could be losing the psychological battle will never be known. What is known is that, the great man suddenly leapt unto his feet, threw his cap angrily unto the pitch, run fiercely into the goal, spread out his long arms and beckoned to Kakoko once again to shoot.
Meanwhile, a small group of Congolese soldiers had, amidst cheers from the fans, picked up Robert’s cap with the tip of a bayonet, displaying it as a trophy. Officials of Asante Kotoko finally succeeded in retrieving it, but not before the soldiers had slashed through the inner lining of the cap in a desperate search for the elusive juju they believed was tucked away somewhere in there. Then silence.......! The long period of anticipation and the psychological intrigues had had its toll and one would have thought an earthquake had started, judging from the wobbly legs of Kakoko. It was no wonder, therefore, that he half-kicked the turf as he sent the ball miles over the bar. Asante Kotoko had won.
General Mobuto Sese Seko had had a difficult 5 years in power. By 1970, however, nearly all potential threats to his rule, including Patrice Lumumba, had been smashed. This year marked the pinnacle of Mobuto’s legitimacy and power. Even though Englebert had won the trophy before, Mobuto had been desperate for them to win the 1970 edition to raise the spirit of a depressed nation and serve as a comfortable springboard for future ambitions. Before handing the cup over to Sunday Ibrahim, he turned to his people, his face contorted in disappointment and sheer fury, “You Congolese,” he said “it is because of your foolishness that this cup is going to Ghana.”

I can still rememember Joe Lartey giving commentry on the match between Accra Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko doing the grand opening of the Accra stadium with the newly installed Florecent lights. The scores was 1:1, I rememeber prince Amartey scored the Heats of Oak goal with a penalty kick. During that match, Robert Mensah was dubbed the wizard goalkeeper. Robert was the goalkeeper with the magnect hands that can attract the ball. I still remember the Joe Lartey commentry, I can still see the Robert Mensah in his cooling hat in goal doing wonders. May his soul rest in peace.

Thanks so much for the story.Back then, I was very young and could not mourn. We only wished he recovered. As I read the article and recollected the song we use to sing about him, I shed some tears for this great son of Africa. I entreat Asante Kotoko's present management to show some gesture of love and appreciation by blessing the family with some appreciable gift. If the old administration of Asante kotoko messed up, the current one can clean up the mess. I suggest a statue of this great keeper must be erected at the Baba Yara stadium. His famous hat and gloves must be at our museum. In fact we should celebrate such people who contribute to the growth and fame of our nation and not those who steal from it.

Thank you so much Princewilly, OMG! Robert Mensah's death till date is one of the most painful deaths, I have had to contain, because it was so sudden and above all was preventable. I remember Ibrahim Sunday was so frustrated he burst out saying Robert Mensah was so indisciplined, and that he was supposed to have been in Camp for an African Cup match or so.
Prince, you are so right because Oliver, Odame and Robert were then believed to be dope buddies. Nostalgic indeed.

Wonderful piece Andy,we all miss Bob a lot. There are few facts I still remember to correct. It was Zinabu who shot the penalty but it went over the bar.Kotoko's semi-final before meeting Englebert was against Ismailiya of Egypt and not Young Africans. His conceding 3 goals to Conners was due to some dissension among the Kotoko defenders due to the amount involved to get Bob to Kumasi and not due to poor goalkepping. I know others can add more but this is what I remember.

Aaaaah, I remember the final of that African Club Championship match in Zaire. With the time rapidly winding down and the match tied 1-1 ( which was going to make Kotoko the champions on an away goal superiority) the referee signalled for a penalty that Kotoko defender Odame had supposedly committed. Odame literally wailed - crying at the top of his lungs, with his hand beating the ground repeatedly. But justice prevailed when Tsinabu mised the penalty - I believe he shot over the bar or Robert Mensah parried the ball away. This piece by Andy Quao made me reach for and play a Zairean CD extolling the exploits of Kalala and Tsinabu. Indeed, those were the days.

I WAS IN FORM ONE WHEN THIS HAPPENED. ROBERT'S BODY WAS TAKEN TOUND FROM KUMASI TO TAKORADI AND ARRIVED CAPE COAST ON A RAINY NIGHT, LED BY THE LARGEST NUMBER OF MOTOR CYCLES YOU EVER SAW. HIS MENTOR, MASTER OTWE OF CAPE COAST AND DWARF'S COACH, WAS MY MATH AND LATIN TEACHER AT ST. AUGUSTINES. THE NEXT DAY, A GARGANTUAN QUEUE LINED UP AROUND BAKANO TO SEE ROBERT'S BODY LAID OUT IN CAPE COAST TOWN HALL.EVERYBODY WAS IN RED AND BLACK. AFTER WAITING FOR HOURS AND HOURS, I GOT CLOSE TO THE GATE OF THE TOWN HALL, WEDGED BETWEEN TWO SITH FORM SENIORS, EVEN THOUGH IT HAD BEEN PUIBLISHED THSAT NO CHILDREN WERE ALLOWED. I WAS TINY AT 13. AT THE GATE, AN ARMED SOLDIER SAID'HEY! YOU'RE TOO SMALL' THEN PUSHED ME OUT OF THE GATE. I NEVER SAW THE LEGEND LAID OUT. LATER, HE WAS BURIED AT QUEEN ANNES POINT, CAPE COAST EVEN THOUGH KOTOKO HAD WANTED TO MEMORIALIZE HIM IN KUMASI. FOR A LONG TIME, A WOODEN INSCRIPTION STOOD ON HIS GRAVE: HERE LIES AFRICA'S NO. 1 GOALKEEPER, ROBERT MENSAH.' THE SUN AND THE RAIN DESTROYED THIS, AND WITH TIME, ROBERT'S GRAVE GOT LOST. NOW, THE SITE IS A HOUSING ESTATE. THIS IS HOW GHANA EULOGISES HER HEROES. MAY ROBERT MENSAH REST IN PERFECT PEACE.

I was in Secondary School in the days of this great Goalkeeper, Robert Mensah. There is no goalkeeper as agile and charismatic. The more he was hated by opponents the more they were admired him for his skills. I was not a Kotoko supporter but his skills made me watch Kotoko matches.
One more thing which I think no one has remembered yet is that at the time of his death Kotoko was to play Accra Great Olympics in an African Cup duel. His death a few days before the match brought a lot of tension. Olympics had then beaten, Abalouyah of Kenya 3-1 and MMM of Mouritania 7-0 and had an unbeaten record. Kotoko Supporters threatened Olympics that whoever scored a goal would pay with his life. In the match in Accra that day Peter Lamptey who was the main Striker was so reluctant that the Veteran Play Maker and Captain, Jones Attukweifio went ahead solo to score the first goal.
Sometimes such story's gos a long way.
Robert Mensah was paid One thousand Cedis in 1971 for transferring to Kotoko. The amount was unbelievable. Robert was indiscipline for most of the season and very selective in matches. It gave the opportunity for Essel Mensah ...
