Ghana indeed needs a new capital. Let's not throw good money over Accra that has become a big filthy slum, the way every foreigner who visits the city describes it.
My choice is Attebubu in the northern part of Ashanti Region which lies relatively close to the middle of the country. It's proximity to the Volta Lake makes it an ideal place to build a new capital.

Please, note that Atebubu is in the BA. It will be a good place for a new capital but a new capital should really mean new, not the transformation of an old town. The new capital can be planned for a place that is a village or completely bush, preferably in BA. Then planning can be made from scratch.
But this should be a very long term project - one that will come to fruition in 20 or 30 years time.

The so-called CRCC must get away with their wild suggestions that it will be a waste,if the proposed interchange at the Nkurumah circle is constructed. It is the best thing Accra will ever experience.I do not understand why Rawlings did not have the foresight to build one in Nkurumah circle before any where else.Kuffour also commited the same mistake when he built the one at Tetteh Quarshie and left the circle where traffic is a huge problem in the metropolis.Nobody should mis quote me that these areas viz,Tetteh Quarshie and Akko Adje,s underpasses are not necessary, far from that, what I mean is that there should be the idea of first thing first, which advisors or the technical men of both presidents might have missed. These edifices are constructed to ease traffic jams and that is what is prevailing in the advance countries and not for the prime interest of any individual.

What is Rapid Bus Transport System?
Accra will need an underground train system (subway/metro) but we can't afford (and manage) that. But we can afford a few lines of tramways in Accra. Trains carry lots of passengers and have their own tracks that should be given premium over cars and lorries. We can start with just one line from any of the suburbs into Central Accra - from Tetteh Quarshie to Accra? Or from Kaneshie to Accra? Anything that will ease the traffic in the city centre to start with.
In 30 years, we should have a new capital. I will be dead and gone by then but I want to see plans for it being drawn NOW.

So Mr Richard Armah, why can you not make a proposal to the government and sit down with whichever committee or body is looking into this project?. It amazes me why some of you cannot adopt liaison and persuasion and logically express your views/opinions constructively instead. You've mde some very good argument but I feel you should request for an audience with the committee dealing with this proposal. You can achieve a better result.

Richard, I couldn't agree more with you on the heading but,...........
I hope your argument is in good faith and not that of a short sighted 'foot-soldier' all because it's about 'NKRUMAH' circle.....Well, I'm afraid that's what Ghana's been reduced to......gathering from the level of insults on this forum.
It's a shame that after 50 something years later we are still not sure how we embark on and execute such projects without any given thoughts.
("Osagyefo, may your soul rest in perfect peace")........Please bear with me......I feel so sad as I write in response to your article.
YOUR QUOTE:......"the congestion in Accra is not due to inadequate road facilities, but rather a poor management of the transport system in Accra."
I have responded to a similar article on this subject in the past but,......The problem with congestion in Accra is due to lack of COMMON SENSE, on the part of the AMA authorities, the police, commercial drivers, pedestrians, street hawkers and traffic engineers.
Let me use Nkrumah circle as an example, since you have rightly touched on it.
Let's take for instance driving from GBC on the Ring Road past bus stop towards circle. The traffic flows towards the circle till you get towards Busy Internet then the ‘tro-tros’ and taxis stop anywhere with impunity – causing traffic jams.
The hawkers then jump in to sell on our roads and then there is the taxi rank after the overhead, traffic lights with pedestrian crossing and then the police at the circle?????????
Then, immediately after the circle, is another ‘tro-tro’ station on the right with ‘tro-tros’ queuing to get in and immediately after that, is a traffic light with another pedestrian crossing and if you go past it on the right is Neoplan station, which is now plied with ‘okadas’ riding across railway lines in the opposite direction, with police standing next to them, all this happening as you get to the railway lines.
After the lines is another ‘tro-tro’ station on the right – queuing to get in and parking on the roadsides picking passengers along that short space of the road. All this chaos as mentioned above, goes on with hawkers in the midst, selling all kinds of things…….including toothpicks imported from CHINA???????? Yes!............ That is all in the name of DEM-ALL-CRAZY!
So, if this is not a recipe for disaster as in the sense of causing traffic congestion then, I do not know what is!!!!!!
Go further down the road past the police at the traffic light at the turning towards New Times Corporation, heading towards Obetsebi Lamptey roundabout. Bu then again before you get there is Awudome cemetery where the road turning into it shows the LAWLESSNESS in Ghana to the world, especially on burial days.
There, you will see ‘human beings’ on the way to bury their dead, riding and driving speedily in all directions with mourners blocking roads for the ‘safe passage of their dead’ (tongue in cheek) to the cemetery. It's unbelievable.
There is NEVER a police presence there and therefore chaos on Fridays and Saturdays is never ending. Not forgetting the weekdays too.
Mr. Nii Armah…..it’s not about flyovers and new capital cities….it’s more to do with implementing LAW and ORDER and more importantly COMMON SENSE!!!!!!
Just like other jurisdictions who claim to promote DEM-ALL-CRAZY! Their LAW and ORDER works to the teeth. No one and I mean no one is above the law or being treated differently for poverty sake.
I remember back in the days of Salifu Amankwa, taking care of the Nkrumah circle........he treated Ghanaians to the only language they understand which is............. FORCE and ORDER!
That is what has kept pedestrians away from crossing the circle, as it was back in the days...........without it. I;m afraid our people will take you for a long ride.
And here you are Nii Armah, talking and writing about grandeur infrastructural projects............ without we, ever walking the basic walk to save our lives. THE TYPICAL AFRICAN!
“HEY! Let’s run before we walk”........that's me the AFRICAN!!! GUESS WHAT? MR. AFRICAN! YOU WILL ALWAYS FALL, BUDDY!
We need to tackle the basics with COMMON SENSE and the rest will take care of itself.
GOD BLESS GHANA! AFRICAN FOREVER!
