A man who is a traditionalist or a muslim and knows what he's capable of achieving for Ghana and her citizens shouldn't shear from who he truly is.
And true citizens who are well educated to know what they truly want for themselves and country, should know to separate a man's intellect and ability to provide on his promise from whatever he worships.
Don't we benefit a lot from Asia technology? And if the answer is yes, then we're the biggest hypocrites as these Asians are no christian as a dog is not human.
Our Kings are not christians but we accept them right?
We are our own enemies as we are so hypocritical to a point that our politicians just know how to tell us lies.

Faith works is not sitting in the office or taking trash out. Faith works means what you are faithing for can come to reality. What is happening in USA IS the deception that has been brought into the world to deceive on things of God almighty. Using vehicles to reverse the word of God, cell phones to express faith of being busy and sitting in threes and fives to demonstrate a lie. How come all the religions have their own book different in so many ways? Don't allow USA to use democarcy and capitalism to obscure things of the Lord God.

Hello,
Here are a few typos/grammatical errors we just discovered in our essay (we are working so hard to avoid some of these errors but they sometimes escape our attention for whatever reasons. Maybe writing (and researching) for so many articles at the same time limit our ability to do concentrated proofreading. That should not be an excuse, however):
Sporadically, the muffled voice of Islam forces its way through the choked crevice of pre-election and post-election Christological cacophony "to makes" its presence felt. (correction: "to make")
However, we shall not bother our pretty little head about the other factors. (correction: "heads").
Is President John Dramani Mahatma a Christian or Moslem? (Correction: "Mahama")
Do we want to Prophet Muhammad or Jesus Christ to rule Ghana? (correction: no "to" before Prophet Muhammed).
Please bear with us.
Thanks

These typos don't matter. No reader will be confused by them since they don't change the sense of what you're reading. There's no need for you to apologise for them here. Just read carefully through your work next time. But my best advice for you is to let a friend (another person) read through before you despatch it for posting. Often, a second person can easily see things which you'll miss even if you read through your own work several times.
But, honestly, Francis, I am beginning to get fed up with the excessive quotations and references to other people's works in your articles. One has to search hard to find out what YOU are saying YOURSELF in the clutter of quotes. Are you afraid we won't believe what you have to say yourself unless you support it with long quotes from some other "master"? I think your point about our leadership and religion is very well made and does not need any quotes from Lucky Dube or Reza Aslan to prop it up.
I saw the piece nicely put up on modernghana yesterday but chose to read this one. Blame it on the love hate relationship we all have with ghanaweb... lol.

Hi Francis,
Right on target. We must also have our philosophical debates on these issues. And unlike what Media Mogul thinks, you are allowed to float the ideas, incrementally if need be, without having to take a stance like some of us have now done. So there was a time some who couldn't fathom why I couldn't believe in any supreme deity used to brand me a JW (yes, I also read loads of their well informed publications you mentioned in another response), for views expressed pertaining to Christmas and Easter being pagan holidays adopted into Christianity.
Anyway, below are my views expressed in response to the statement by Kofi Adams of the NDC against the PPP's call on President Mahama to mind the business of ruling the country and leave god to mind his business too.
Of course, so far as I am concerned, he is failing [and will woefully if the present trend continues]in his presidency, not mindful of my Xmas wishes to him expressed in my piece, Staying in the Frying Pan.
The task here in weaning Ghanaians off superstition is a long one. Some of us can only begin the process by muddying the water, causing the furore, fissures and ferment that allows the younger ones to begin to think of and perceive the cosmos differently. Welcome on board, mate!
Here we go:
I haven't hidden my disdain for the ignorance and superstition that is bedeviling Africans. But when our political leaders have decided to introduce their backwardness and superstition into the secular state that Ghana is supposed to be, giving it such prominence in the daily affairs of governance rather than the mundane formal role it plays in most civilised countries, then someone must speak against it. I therefore wholeheartedly support the PPP statement as in the right direction. Ignorance and superstition are one cog in the vicious cycle of backwardness and underdevt and they must NOT be promoted by our Presidents! Period!
Ghana as a nation of developing people not yet classified amongst the civilised people, need to shun things that continue to make us backward and developing people forever.
The other day, I read of the start of building of a witches camp! I was mortified, horrified! If I were in charge of Ghana, such camps wouldn't be existing by now (same for trokosi), talk of building new ones!
I think it was high time those of us whose forebears assisted the British to found the Gold Coast, stamp out the slave trade and rampant slavery in the Gold Coast and brought the rational devt that catapulted the Gold Coast into the model colony that it was, with standard of living equal to southern and eastern Europe by the 1950s, need to step up our engagement and make our presence felt in the ruling of that country. All these "yeye," wannabe "leaders" with the mentality of the peasantry and artisanal fishermen and the morality of alley cats with sticky fingers are just messing around big time. In spite of calling god, god in every speech they make, they are constantly shown to be a bunch of lawless "thieves and thiefettes"! My grandfather, Chief of the Native Police in the Eastern Province, would have imprisoned them all, so would I! They have no clue as to how a country is developed and turn into a civilised nation. No track record to build on.
So, when are Ghanaians going to learn that no bleeding god created this universe? Their cosmogony and cosmology are still deeply rooted in the Weberian primitive world of substantive rationality! White people have written tons about how incapable blacks are the rational and scientific world cos our brains haven't evolved sufficiently like theirs! Sure! sure! I know you haven't heard or read of that before but you are probably the first graduate from your family, if not your whole wretched village! You see, that's why we have a long, long way to go as a nation! Akadu claims to have a PhD in Sociology. These are the things he/she should be writing on, rather than constant ethnocentric jibes and those watery proses he/she calls "hyperbole poems".
Luckily, I graduated into the ranks of the civilised peoples before ken Kuranchie came out of prison to declare that "Ghanaians are not civilised" cos of what he saw in prison. I was surprised and amused he had to go to bring before realising that, since I knew that as a child!

A man walked into the ladies department of a Macy's, and walked up to the woman behind the counter and said, "I'd like to buy a bra for my wife" What type of bra?" asked the clerk. "Type?" inquires the man. "There is more than one type?" "Look around," said the saleslady, as she showed a sea of bras in every shape, size, color and material. "Actually, even with all of this variety, there are really only three types of bras," replied the salesclerk. Confused, the man asked what the types were. The saleslady replied "The Catholic type, the, Salvation Army type, and the Baptist type. Which one do you need?" Still confused the man asked, "What is the difference between them?" The lady responded, "It is all really quite simple. The Catholic type supports the masses, the Salvation Army type lifts up the fallen, and the Baptist type makes mountains out of mole hills.

Dear Akasi Martha Zzema,
How are you doing?
You are very clear as a matter of fact.
The problem for Ghana (and Africa generally) is getting good leaders to get us out of the social, economic, and political morass.
As you may probably have been aware, the situation is not "perfect" even in the so-called rich countries, but it's Ghana (and Africa) we are talking about here.
With the abundance of natural and human resources we have, things should have been relatively better for the masses.
Yet here we are still struggling to make ends meet. Ironically, many non-African countries would have wished to be in total possession of what we have.
Let's hope and pray that the helper Christ promised is already on his/her way.
Thanks for your comments. I do appreciate them.
Thanks again.

Yes I read the last part of your piece on GM technology. And I also read the new comments that came up on the earlier one. I see there are a few strong voices for GM foods in Ghana. Some people don't seem to have any problems with it at all and think we in Ghana have things under control.
I don't know which particular GM crops are on sale in Ghana but I did notice some changed agricultural methods even in the village. I saw all the herbicide usage and remembered all the amount of energy we expended with the hoe and cutlass during my youth. Right now there's a lot of tomatoes in Accra selling cheap. But people are complaining that soon the season will be over and they'll be paying a lot for the stuff. Then they advice you to buy a certain type which doesn't go rotten quickly...
Incidentally, I missed the debate on the Aslan book. I don't think it was big here in Europe and certainly not on the continent. I read a review of the book only last week in the London Review of Books and subsequently read the book itself as well as some of the debate on the Internet. I've not yet watched his Fox interview.
Religion is doing something to our people in Ghana and I don't know if it's all good. And the politicians of all persuasions are using it for their own ends. Books like Aslan's are not discussed in Ghana where the only thing the media discuss is partisan politics. The Pentecostals are doing well with their literal reading of the Bible but the orthodox churches are not letting them have all the way. None of them teaches the people about the historical Jesus. And Islam too is on the march. Formerly mosques used to be on the outskirts of small towns where the zongos are. Today, they are everywhere.
If God and Allah don't come and solve our problems Ghanaians won't know what to do oooo...

And thanks for reading the piece "A Few More Practical Solutions."
Thanks also for sharing your views with us.
In fact, Mr. Ali-Masmadi Jehu Appiah, the chairperson of "Food Sovereignty Ghana," one of Ghana's prominent vocal organizations against GM, wrote to thank me for the article and to formally introduce me to the organization and its work. It was a lively introductory discussion we had!
Actually, the "Food Sovereignty Ghana" website has a lot of useful info on GM technology and on ongoing social, scientific, and political debate in Ghana.
Additional info on GM ground research in other African countries, too, as in Burkina Faso (Bt cotton),are thoroughly covered by the site.
If you haven't already, you may want to visit this site. Very resourceful. I was there yesterday and even today.
Finally, he did ask me to do more writings on the subject, which, indeed, I promise to do in the future (Interestingly, he read the article on modernghana. This is for laughs, anyway).
And please, don't forget to see Aslan's weird interview on Fox. So embarasing yet interesting and informative!
I had expected Bill O'Reilly to do that interview instead of the lady. On the other hand, Rush Limbaugh or Don Imus would have killed him.
I still can't wrap my head around the fact that some American religion (Christian)scholars have seen fit to attack the book while simultanoeuly claiming they have not read it. Isn't that strange?
Thanks.

Aslan's bank balance must be hefty now even though he didn't say a thing that has not been said by other scholars long ago. I read the book and if you've been interested in the field, you find others have said similar things. I am yet to read Aslan's earlier book on Isam - no god but god...
All religious fanatics have the same trait: fanaticism. Those American Christian right scholars attacking the book without having read it are just like the fanatical Muslims in Asia who got themselves killed over Rushdie's Satanic Verses when they hadn't read a page of it. Even the Muslim scholars there also read one particularly offensive paragraph that was photocopied and spread around, taking the whole thing out of context.
That is what religion is doing to us - it makes even well educated "normal" people go crazy. ALL religion does that, even our own native religions that we have now neglected in favour of the "white man's" own version of religion.
Someone is warning you not to touch the subject on ghanaweb. Well, you'll find your countrymen as weird on the subject of religion as any American right-wing Christian or Muslim fundamentalist.
I've looked at some of the pages on GM technology you've recommended and I see there is quite a lot to read and to get to know about it. I think the discussion (and the fight) is an ongoing one until the truth is better known and spread around. I hope we haven't seen the last article from you on this. Just cut down on the extensive quotes (cut down - I don't mean for you to remove all)... lol
Thanks

Good you saw the interview. Yes, the lady still works for Fox. Fox's a conservative outfit, you know. Therefore, her interview is normal.
And you are right on another point. Most of the things Aslan says in his book are "public knowledge." In fact, there is a 200-year historiography on that.
Besides, the Times' reviewer of his book, which I partially quoted, lists some of the important sources which Aslan liberally borrowed from.
It's a shame American Christian scholars will attack him the way they did.
I guess part of the "attack" has to do with his ethnicity and religion (he has alluded to these in some of his interviews).
Others even questioned his academic credentials, saying he had no proper credentialization to write a scholarly piece on Christ.
For instance, he does not understand why it's okay for "whites" or Westerners to act as authorities on Islam and Prophet Muhammad, but suddenly becomes a major problem when a non-Westerner attempts to become an "authority" on Christ and Christianity.
You'd have loved to see Bill O'Reilly ask Fox's security to literally carry an interviewee out of his interview room, simply because he disagreed with him. This was after September 11th.
As for Salman Rushdie's "Satanic Versus," it's a classic. I read that book in 2008-2009.
I think many readers and proponents of political Islam misunderstood him. The style he's adopted for his writing, historical fiction/magical realism, sometimes throws readers off. It's much like the imagism of Wole Soyinka.
The Indian-Trinidadian V.S. Naipaul, now British, is another. I think Naipaul and Rushdie have collaborated on a book!
Anyway, have you read Rushdie's "The Ground Beneath Her Feet"? That's another classic.
Thanks

Yes oo, Western scholars have been studying (and ridiculing) Islam for the past 300 years but they don't want their own Christianity to be scrutinized the same way... Well, it's only a certain type of Western Christian scholar who doesn't want Christianity to be scrutinized by Muslims. That's the type that works on Fox and mostly lives in the US and votes a certain way.
Many western scholars have done "fruitful" work on Islam with a few even converting in the process. Muslims have not done similar work on Christianity perhaps because they are so satisfied with their own Muslim knowledge. Aslan is really not from the other side... His education is very Western.
When Aslan admits that he wanted his book to be popular rather than scholarly, he must have been thinking about his bank balance. Well, he struck a jackpot even if he has had a few death threats.
Did you say Naipaul and Rushdie have collaborated on a book? I never heard of that and perhaps you can't be serious with that. I think they are still "enemies" who haven't "heard of each other"!!! Please tell me about the book if you've found it.
Have you read Rushdie's recent memoir JOSEPH ANTON? He pays back Naipaul when he says the latter's book (AMONG THE BELIEVERS) is one he would definitely want to read (read: he hasn't heard of that book - Salman of all people?).
Yes, I read The Ground Beneath... not his best. Satanic Verses not his best either. He is struggling to surpass Midnight's Children. His talent - there's no doubt about that!
Oh, I think Aslan went on so much about his credentials in the Fox interview. I have four degrees, I have four degrees... I have a PhD in... But his PhD is really not in the subject matter of Zealot. And he has an MFA too which wasn't really in Religion but which explains why he is such a good story teller (writer).
Interesting.

I googled "Homeless By Choice" and found nothing. Perhaps I didn't search hard enough. It's possible that people may have written books that are studies of Naipaul and Rushdie as two diaspora Indian writers. But a collaboration by the two of them? - I am still looking for that! Help me find it.
Yes, Chimamanda won the MacArthur Award - 500,000$ to be given out in five years. Perhaps she's already used it all up. But her books sell well, she is established and should not want for money. Her first book, Purple Hibiscus, is a set text for WASSCE students. Half a Yellow won a top prize for female writers and the film directed by Biyi Bandele but having non-Nigerians in all major roles will rake in some more cash. She doesn't really have to want for money but concentrate on her creative work. I read her latest, Americanah, and think it is pure soap opera. She is good,(the lady can write!) but Americanah is not very good. Read it? As a matter of fact, I like Taiye Selasie's book GHANA MUST GO, with all its narrative shortcomings, better than Americanah. But my favourite Nigerian writer for now is Teju Cole whose only novel is a great delight to read - very different from anything Chimamanda has written even though she was one of the early readers of Teju's book. The three (Chimamanda, Teju and Selasie) are visiting my city this month and I intend to go listen to them (if they've already not come and gone...)
Have you noticed Chimamanda's Americanah didn't make the Booker long list even though it was released in time for it? She lives in the USA but is still legible for the Booker just like Jhumpa Lahiri, who won the Pulitzer but still made the Booker shortlist this year with her The Lowland. A Zimbabwean made the Booker shortlist - No Violet Bulawayo, and that's a big thing. Oh, Chimamanda made the Booker shortlist with her first novel, just like her idol, Achebe, with Anthills but neither won. So much for prizes which, in the end, don't matter much apart from the huge sums involved for the winners.
Let me answer Mark before my "charity account" runs out...

Francis and Media Mogul,
Permit me to partake in your discussions, especially the religious aspect.
To appreciate fully the role of religion, certainly at the individual level, one can not discount the health-seeking aspect of it.
In Europe and in the Americas, it is not uncommon for individuals to see their personal doctors for all afflictions of the body and mind. Among, Ghanaians and Africans at large, there is the tendency to seek help (health) from religious leaders. A case in point, a successful lawyer friend of mine, who is going through painful marital problems, causing her sleepless nights has resorted to a Ghanaian pastor who has soothsaying and prophetic powers for help. An European would have gone to see a counsellor for help as well as a doctor for night sedation. You hardly see Africans going to psychiatrists and psychologists (Shrinks) for help.
The question is, is this health-seeking behaviour good? Can we judge those who resort to such means? I am in the health profession and note with interest how these measures affect us. When we are given a diagnosis, we reject and turn to pastors. Despite this, I am careful in judging those who seek health through religion.

My own view on your take on this issue: looks like since we in Africa have not made a profession of personal advice, we have tended to seek this in our immediate elders and respected clergy in our midst. Nothing wrong with that. Personally, I don't think professional shrinks are any better than these respected elders and clergy.
The problem arises when those Africans who go see these soothsayers and prophets regard their powers as greater than those of scientific professionals. They don't have to. I don't think they know anything better than the "scientifically" trained health professionals. I don't regard "shrinks" as among these. So if Europeans see shrinks, why shouldn't Africans seek soothsayers and prophets? They are all the same.
But some Africans seek soothsayers when Western science fails them. Others do the opposite. I prefer those who seek soothsayers only after Western science has failed them...

It is good to know that you do not write off sooth-saying but admit that western science and religion (soothsaying) can co-exist. In fact you introduced another element into the health--seeking behaviour patterns of the African, namely the role of elders. One cannot emphasise on this enough.
In an age and environment (diaspora)
where stress is on the increase, non-harmful ways of stress reduction should be welcomed indeed.

An excellent piece as usual but ,please, for the sake of your freedom and peace of mind, try to stay clear from issues of religion before you are skinned alive by those who have allowed their religious and traditions believes becloud their sense of judgement. You are still my boy, young and energetic and wish you could write more on issues of applied math and sciences, social issues other than religion, for the benefit of all, for as far as I know, religious diversity has been our bane when issues of realization of the much needed peaceful coexistence in this practically scientific world of mortal beings. Christians elsewhere in the ' extremist' Islamic world are being maimed and annihilated for just holding on to their religious believe. Kwarteng, you and I myself were, and are living witnesses to the unfortunate demise of Professor T.O. Owusu Ansah, a world renowned mathematician of the " Dedican Cut" fame and formerly of KNUST who died because he refused blood transfusion , a practice which is in contrast with the teachings of the Jehovah Witnesses. So sad, wasn't it? But you said it all when you quote Lucky Dube in the ending of the last paragraph to make things easy for those religiously intransigent beings who defile simple ,easy and scientifically pragmatic solutions to their own created convoluted problems. Be good and extend my greeting to ' controversial' Rufus whenever you get his contact.

Dear Mr. Figure-Out,
How are you doing?
Yes, I remember Dr. Owusu Ansah very well. In fact, he taught me calculus 1/11 in first year. And functional analysis in my last year.
However, you will also do well to remember that my own uncle, Isaac Osei, the lanky senior librarian and a lecturer in the department of book industry, also died because he refused to accept blood transfusion on his sick bed.
He was one of the leading members of the Jehovah's Witnesses in the Asante Region.
And he made me read every single publication of the Jehovah's Witnesses until I almost died. He died in 1997, a couple of months after I came to America.
He's why I have come to know so many things about the Jehovah's Witnesses (and comparative religion, in general).
Actually, by the time I graduated, I had literally read thousands of "Awake," 'The Watchtower," etc.
In fact, I had real most of their major publications (books). I even continued to do so when I relocated to America.
Do you recall the debates on "Always Around" and those in my room, 4th floor, room 85, Unity Hall?
But who are you, anyway? You seem to have all the right info on me. Please send me an email and let's talk (franciskkwarteng@yahoo.com).
As to Rufus and even Seto, my course mates, I can only say Rufus is still in Ghana. Seto is in the UK.
Anyway, I shall be considering your offer to do some writing on applied mathematics and the natural sciences. In any case, you may want to read the following:
"Ghana And Genetically Modified Technology: A Brewing Crisis"--Parts l/ll and "Fighting Genetically Modified Technology In Ghana: A Few More Practical Solutions."
Thanks for your positive comments. As for grammar, we are all struggling to do our best. English still seems one of the most difficult language for me beside my passable French!
Please don't keep me in suspense! Send me a mail (franciskkwarteng@yahoo.com).
Thanks.

I am keeping you in suspense huh? Thinking of Dr. Obri and Dr Yaw Baah will bring you close to unmask me. I will definitely send you email as requested. Kwarteng, your 'association' with Dr Bokor and Trokosis in General has corrupted you so much that some keen readers think you have traits of that evil Togolese clan in your gene. You definitely need to apologize to your Kookoase brethrens for keeping them in suspense. And you may wonder how I am able to link you to Trokosi Bokor. The use of the phrases like " I shall return " and " we will...." mimics the writing style of Dr Bokor. Also, as far as I know, you don't speak Ewe, though Trokosi Seto was your first year room mate, so it made me thinking who has been doing the translations in ewe quotes that has been characterized your write ups, and again Trokosi Bokor comes in mind. Got ya! Well, expert a great surprise from your good old friend who you don't have to look beyond your nose to see when I visit New York sometime soon in November. Accept my warmest greetings from Massachusetts. Figure out who I am.

All the prophets, all the religions and all the scriptures hang on two commandments:"Thou shalt love the Lord, thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind."This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is "Thou shall love thy neighbour as thyself"Once you respect these two commandments your duty to both God and state is fulfilled.
African religion was here before both Christianity and Islam were introduced to our shores. Whereas Christians reach God through Jesus Christ, Moslems reach God through Mohamed and African Religion reach God through their Ancestors.
What is important is to be tolerant to each other and respect our secular arrangement of freedom of religion, worship and faith in our believe system as enshrined in our constitution. Patriotic one-nation Ghanaians eschew religious fanaticism for the good of the nation state because we are one people with one destiny and our proverbial hospitality, modesty and tolerance are all prophetic religious edicts.

Let me just say that your "I think men must learn to practice the virtues inherent in them" falls under "morality or quality psychological bla bla bla bla."
Your assertion is merely an isolated example of "quality of the psycholgical morality of the people."
In fact, when I use the word "humanity," Dartey, it's the same vitues.
Virtues are part and parcel of humanity. Therefore, you and I are merely playing with semantics, not more, not less.

With the conquest of the Moslem middle east by the Christian west and their imposition of western civilization and values, most of their citizen were appalled by the submission of their leaders to the influence of foreign culture. Egypt,Syria, Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Iran and indeed the rest of the Arab world and therefore Islam all fell under western influence.
With the conquest of Turkey by Russia and the demise of the Ottoman empire the middle east effectively came under Christiandom and even though the various countries Later won their independence, the Christian western influence and values were deeply rooted. The invincible hand of the west was dictating all aspect of their economic and political system of government no wonder some of them stood against these impositions and it unfortunately came with its negatives of militancy and radicalism.
Here in Ghana the same values and culture had been introduced by the west and it seems we have bought these Christian values and western cultures line, hook and sinker. So we find nothing wrong with it. We even shy away from our traditions and cultural practices because we believe they are heathen practices as the west claim. Are we now zombies! During the elections our political leaders were seen all over the place in the mosques and churches. Our people are indeed puppets of the west and their ventriloquist dummies. Better traditional African religion than the imposition of these two foreign religions.
