Poor me. What a waste of my time. I read through this article and all that I learnt were insulting words. Where I worked as a JOURNALIST there was a maxim:"YOU CAN MAKE YOUR POINT WITHOUT INSULTING. TAKE YOURSELF OUT OF YOUR STORY." The point that banks are not charity institutions is a very strong one. As long as their regulator, BANK OF GHANA has not sanctioned them a Politician, who wants to score cheap political points, must be ignored. He does not deserve the time you have made me to waste on him.

Three economists and three mathematicians were going for a trip by train. Before the journey, the mathematicians bought 3 tickets but economists only bought one. The mathematicians were glad their stupid colleagues were going to pay a fine. However, when the conductor was approaching their compartment, all three economists went to the nearest toilet. The conductor, noticing that somebody was in the toilet, knocked on the door. In reply he saw a hand with one ticket. He checked it and the economists saved 2/3 of the ticket price.
The next day, the mathematicians decided to use the same strategy- they bought only one ticket, but economists did not buy tickets at all! When the mathematicians saw the conductor, they hid in the toilet, and when they heard knocking they handed in the ticket. They did not get it back.
Why? The economists took it and went to the other toilet.

This would have been an otherwise good article but for the political insults and innuendoes. Truly Fiifi Kwetey would have been wrong had he not been a Ghanaian politician. He was talking to a political audience and not economic sense. The matter of interest rates is an issue of the age old demand and supply in economics. The classical disconnect from the Bank of Ghana is that on one hand the OMC fixes the prime rate at 16% (being the theoretical rate at which the "lender of last resort" can lend to the commercial banks)and then turns round to borrow from the public (i.e. T-bills)at a rate far higher than that at circa 20%.How can the Bank of Ghana lend to the commercial banks lower than the rate at which it borrows? Simply means the prime rate is not realistic. Secondly, with the risk-free rate being in the region of 20%, the commercial banks have been crowded out of cash. They can only now borrow from the public at rates higher than the T-bill rates. No wonder fixed deposit rates are higher than 20%. You don't need rocket science to conclude that they cannot lend below 25% apart from the international banks who perhaps have a way of garnering cash in their global systems. This is basic and I bet Fiifi Kwetey knows except that he was not talking economics. In times like that silence would have been golden. Give it to Hon Dr Benjamin Kumbour when he said Ghana is full of talkers (especially politicians) and not thinkers. The problem is that the Government is full of sharp talkers.

What I am trying to explain in my piece is the cause and effect of government action. They do not directly charge the so called greedy rates, but due to their actions the banks are taking the blame for it.

If you don’t understand economics don’t make a fool of yourself Mr Fiifi Kwetey. Stop this childish tantrum and go back to school to learn the basic concept of economics, i.e. Demand and Supply and its practical application. The cause and effect of human action, that is praxeology made popular by the Austrian economist Ludwig von Mises. The word greedy can best be used to describe his kind. And I will like to ask a reverse question. Will he accept a lesser salary for the job he does or stay at his post if another employer can offer a better salary and perks than he receives now? If not, then keep your mouth shut and just receive your salary for an unnecessary duplicated ministerial position. Fiifi is particularly the cause of the difficulties Ghana is facing. He should humble and listen to Dr. Bawomia ( economist and Finance ) selfish Fiifi listen to John Boadu in Finance and leadership.

All the long blah, blah blah you have stated is all theory. If all the economic theories were really true, panacea, on their own without the behaviour of the market place i.e human beings then you could be right and the eminent and economic gurus and brains would have solved the world's financial and economic problems by now. The Minister comment represents what any investor/saver would say. Of course the banks pay only a very small percentage interest in comparison to their many millions made of which, a large sum is paid as salaries and remunerations to staff who produce negative performance in their over rated posts.
Sir, demand and supply theories are only real when you apply the responsiveness i.e elasticity!!. Kobina Baidoo must stop his O'level/WASEC and be real otherwise, he should go back to the classroom.
