The pity of this poem is in celebrating heroism in suicidal missions while justifying it with the usual accusing fingers so typical of our race. Lampedusa might not have an African tragedy without poor or corrupt leadership in the continent, but that is a fraction, and may be a tiny one, of a complex plot that have kept Africans seeing their destiny in Europe rather than at home. Truth be told, those who can hardly afford bread and butter are still at home living under 'corrupt' leadership some would rather run away from, and the reason is simple, they can't afford the cost of those boat journeys. But of course in Africa, more than anywhere else, sympathy sells and I can see where the writer is coming from. We can do better to teach our people about this dangerous recourse than to celebrate the heroism of daring.
