You should read Cosmopolitanism by Kwame Anthony Appiah, plus other stuff on African cosmology. There are things that do not make sense when viewed from the western epistemological analysis. But, you know, they make sense from the African metaphysical and ontological formulations--we also have a plethora of evidence to back our claims just as western epistemology has evidence to support their concept of reality. We should not discount African epistemology. The belief in the idea of witches flying is not a point of ignorance. It is a part of a people's cosmology just as a belief in a God who exists in heaven is also a claim of faith (mind you I am a devout Christian). Check the Youtube and you will see an interesting example of the manifestation of witches in Australia (a developed society). Belief in witches and other African metaphysical worldviews do not necessary make us ignorant or put us backward. What is hindering development in Africa include gross corruption in high and low places, mismanagement of our resources, misplaced priorities, nepotism, cronyism, selfishness, the hypocrisy of people of faith (in not calling sin by its right name and therefore encouraging corruption because everyone is doing it), the lack of vision by those bunch of political buffoons, and lack of visionary leaders.

Where is the proof that witches are real? some say owls in the night and fireballs at night. these are not proofs. These are unintelligent explanations. There could be scientific explanations for the fireballs. But do Africans ever investigate anything? No! If the river is polluted and the fishes are dying, we blame the gods. If lightening strike someone, it is not electricity, it is the curse of the gods.
So if we see fireballs in the night, there is no intelligent scientific enquiry. We blame the lights on witches.
