Perhaps you could have done better if you had accused entreprenneurs and merchants of worshipping money by devoting their time to build their business empires. Even Our Lord Jesus Christ told the Pharasees: "Give unto Caeser what is Caeser; and to God what is God's". The fact that people are devoted to football doesn't mean they are forgetting about their God and worshipping something else. Many people who follow Christ including Pastors are football enthusiasts and players and fans seek God and Divine Guidance for success on the pitch. I think football is a force for good. It brings unity and people together; it can be used to promote good causes. To say that being devoted to football is committing idolatry is absolute nonsense. It appears the interpretation of the Biblical message is being stretched to another level by pseudo-preachers, which is very unfortunate.

Only those influenced by some other suspicious spirit will proclaim the love of football with committing idolatry against God. There is some truth in his write up as many Christians desert their churches when major football matches are being played.If there is a Champions League match on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, churches are always deserted for football.
Let's prioritise the Lord above all things. In our spare moments we can enjoy all forms of entertainment including football but not at the expense of worshiping our maker.
We are giving too much attention to earthly things and we are all guilty. Some will watch movies hours unending and won't even bother to eat.
Let's give our creator, our refuge, our protector the needed attention because without Him we are lost.

Whilst appreciating the writer's perspective on the need to give God pre-eminence in all that we, as his creation, do, I am of the opinion that if God rules in the affairs of men, then he must also rule in the game of Football, which is, after all, one o the affairs of men. I believe that Football, with its millions of passionate followers, provides a platform for honoring God through the work that Believers do in Football. The Lord Jesus himself told us that it is the sick that have need for a Physician....and if the believer does not go to those that need salvation, how do they get to receive the message of salvation? For me, therefore, one can serve God and work devotedly in Football for as long as one has sorted him or herself out with God.
