Alugu you persist in maintaining that weird Ghanaian way of doing things and even go to the bad extent of wrongly using untruthful examples to support your wrong assumptions.
First of all the houses of a few rich people dont constitute the majority posture.
Secondly I have traveled to and lived in Europe as well as in America. I have seen the houses of many rich people and I dont recollect any that had walls built around them.
Thirdly, for the mere reason of sustaining the ecology, many people - particularly the rich, in the more developed societies have their houses surrounded by thick hedges, trees and shrubs. On occasion, they may have dwarf walls near the proximity of the entry gates to their houses for obvious reasons.
For the people of a poor developing country such as Ghana to overlook the need to avoid huge, expensive and ugly walls is just unbelievable.

What does Ashanti has to do in this? The man wrote is opinion and quiet frankly all the points he raised are very true and sensible. Especially with high walls, if there is an intruder the neighbors will not see, perhaps if you will build a wall, it should be lower so that should an intruder enters your house, neighbors and even by passer can see and alert authourities of any unusual activities in the compound. Where or the background of the writer should not be a matter here/ what matter is the point raise in the aritcle and perhaps you must commend him not rain insults on him and the entire Ashanti. I really don't know why people ars so immature. I read articles here every day and there is always insult because of tribe. Where should tribalism have to do with what the writer is trying to get across? Let us be real here and put all difference aside and work for the common goal of PEACE, LOVE AND HUMILITY. You called the writer primitive, but I think you LARYEAH is the primitive one. We are all Ghanaian and should respect each other irrespective of the person's background. we must commend the good and admonish the evil. Thanks for these points Mr. Owusu-Gyamfi.

I take it that the writer is playing devil's advocate to get the real reasons for walls around houses. A house without walls (if it has serious property inside) is open to surveillance by thieves. The know as much about your house as you and can attack anytime. Petty thieves repeatedly raid, picking anything of value (hanging clothes etc. It is easy for them to watch you through your window whilst you are sleeping, if confronted, they say the were taking a "short cut" through your yard. I can only mention a few here, but I am worried because you are not the only one saying this. Those who want to "show off" their houses by putting up low walls with rails also put up some of your hollow points. my house is a private property, and I want only those I invite inside the walls to know the layout or admire it.
When you are building and you come up against the cost of a concrete wall, you start thinking it is useless, same with current burglar-proof windows. But think again!

He wants to know people's opinion.
Personally, even when I was in school in my 20's, I had always perceived walls to be there to protect you from being seen by "kokonsa" people. Our culture makes it legitimate for neighbors who always want to know what you are doing with your private life to do so: what you cook, what you are eating, who is visiting you, and so on. Walls are there to conceal all these. In other words, I have never viewed walls as means of security. Any criminal can jump over a wall in a twinkle of an eye.
I have an inquisitive sister who lives a house or two from mine. I have made it impossible for her to know what I'm doing in my house! If she wants to know something, she should come and knock at my gate to be opened for her.
Without a wall, she could easily crane her neck from where she is and see my "intestines"!!!

I strongly disagreed your opinion about the walls. In north America here there are some houses have that kind of walls. White house has iron fence similar to any walls in those houses in Ghana. And beside, In north America here people are into technology, it helps them to install all these security devices and ensure safety. In Ghana, people living in different world where poor is a dominance force everywhere. Ghana people are carious and intrude, they always want to know who is living in this house expercially when the house little bit rich. So I think those walls serve us as a privacy and protective as well. While I was in Ghana, I tried installed iron gate to my house. And the purpose of these iron gate is to see other side when some body is passing by. I was sorry I did that because me and my family were deprived of privacy. Averytime I try to play with my family in my compound, kids and some adult come close to the gate and watch us, because they thought we,re rich people. And If I had one of those opaque gate I think I would be reliefed. So I'm saying that those walls in Ghana houses do protect us. Many times criminal get caught when they're trying to escape. So it is very reasonable to build walls around your house. You can't tell me otherwise. And no comparable to the level of standard in abroad to the one in Ghana. So please!

Anything that positive result also negative one but in this case I personally think the Positives of erecting walls around houses outweigh the negatives.Remember we have classes of thieves or criminals and any innocent boy in your neighborhood can just step onto your compound and take away any valuable thing if the house is not fenced and even all sort of animals can invade on your property and do justice to your flowers/plants.The walls may prevent junior criminals from entering the compound/house in the form reducing the risk of being robbed. It takes a real criminal to come into a fenced property.Any way nothing including wall and watchmen can deter a real criminal from coming into your house. This reminds me the good old days when we used to go to unprotected houses/properties to take away( not stealing) oranges because of hunger-lol.So I thick its better to have walls because of the this current society/community in Ghana.

Your post is so FLAWED I just find it incredible that an intelligent man (I am inclined to believe so) can waste his time on such nonsense!!!
First of all, walls provide PRIVACY and secondly, they provide SECURITY. Burglars are no idiots - if two houses are given to then to burgle, they will choose the easier one. Scaling a wall is more difficult than just walking straight to your target.
Do you think a thief would find it easy to scale a wall with your 50 inch Plasma Television or just walk out of your house into a waiting vehicle and take off?
CLIFF - this is the WORST POSTING I have ever come across on GHANAWEB!!!!

i dont know for how long you have lived in switzerland, the epfl was thick bush. the standard was so low that, that it was patronized by foreign students esp. germans as it may be today. here in switzerland, you have effective centralized alarm sytems and videos directly linked to highly professionalized security systems. even a shade is captured by the infra rouge system. there is always security system very close to the vicinity. private security companies, police, municipal police, even mobilized custom officers and believe me satellite cameras girding the whole country from residence to the public domaine. forget about the highways and the borders, especially towards france. i did not talk about the old and retired, or the maimed who call the police for free, i mean it could be false alert. the police move even for false alert. the rich, hand in hand, with the car distributors, not only sponsor new and modern equipped cars for the police, but equally cannablised vehicules. you may see a two-litre police car, but just remove the bumper to have a look at the engine type. youngman, it is more than a century that ghana-helvetico migration- immigration do exist. just concentrate on your studies and admire switzerland. what you see in switzerland is always an iceberg. the 90 percent is hiding. the best living is in hiding a cool swiss philosophy. to remind you that since the bilateral agreement with the european community, crime rate has risen sharply and they are regretting their non-existing or short walls. last but not the least, most of the roads in the porsche residential areas are privately owned. so intruders are automatic suspects. every interception, can end up for a spot fine, and several times caught on a camera, could be very serious offence. the local police has every right to summon you, with warnings and fines and eventually a physical ban to the particular area. so to write using switzerland as an example, please get your information right. that country does not belong any more to the swiss as multi billionaires and millionaires from all over the world have found their haven for various reasons like banking secrecy, extradition. there is not even ten percent swiss of swiss origin in a place like geneva. leave us alone in gh, we dont have mountains as natural walls. probably the swiss are fed up with natural mountain walls. jericho had walls in the Bible, but walls will surely collapse as a promise from God. but till then, just admire ch. for your eyes only.

Walls, in the Ghanaian context, provide security, if not for the movable property, like TV, Furniture, and the like, but for the land or plot of land.
I know of a situation in which a certain poor lady's plot of land, a quarter (1/4)of which was encroached, stolen, or taken forcefully by a rich neighbor, who built a wall around his house, to include the stolen land.
The case has been in court for years. And also, the rich man has threatened the woman on a number of occasions.
So you see, walls are good after all.

Once upon a time, there was a cat who died. When she got to heaven, God asked her how she liked being on earth. She told the Lord that it was awful -- she had to sleep in cold back alleys, where there was no food and life was hard. God told her that he was sorry it had had turned out that way -- but here, in heaven, she would be happy and He would give her the most comfortable, warm pillow to sleep on. The cat laid down upon the pillow and was happy.
A few days later, about a dozen mice that came to heaven together and God asked them how they had liked earth. The earth was no better for them than it was the cat. They explained to God that it was tough and exhausting and their feet were worn out from always running from cats and dogs and people. God felt bad for the mice and decided to give them roller skates.
One day God sees the cat again and asked her how she was liking heaven. She explained that it was absolutely wonderful. The pillow he gave her was the most comfortable place that she had ever slept on, but even better than the pillow were the meals on wheels.
THE MOUSE IS NOT SAFE IN HEAVEN DESPITE HIS SOPHISTICATED ROLLER SKATES.IF THIEVES WANT TO ROB YOU,THEY WILL FIND MEANS TO DO IT.

Walls also cut you off vital cool fresh breeze. Walls add to the heat in the rooms. I have also noticed very few houses with trees on the compound. Trees provide shade and so cool the house. They beautify the premise, reduce the dust in the atmosphere around the house and serve as wind breaks. Walls do not encourage good and friendly neighborliness. I say get rid of your walls folks. Instead of walls, plant hedges.I don't have a wall round my house , only lots of trees and i have not been burgled, not even once.

Building walls around houses is not an option to deter thieves,in fact, during robbery in a house with walls around, victims automatically becomes prisoners at their own homes and government must look into it to discourage people to build walls around their homes, infact the best solution is to introduce security authomatic lighting detecting systems that lights up immedeately there is an intruder in the compound, this will scare thieves who comes in to rob.

In the USA and other developed countries most houses have no walls--but the police response time is quite short. Once you call 911--the police will be there in say 10-15 minutes.
In Ghana--most police stations have no vehicles--so the response time is way longer or non-existent.
To some degree, it is an issue of poverty. And added to that is the weak zoning regulations. So it is near impossible to reduce human traffic. people walk across private property all over the place without regard for privacy of homeowners. And this increases the temptation to steal.
So maybe a community policing idea zoning to direct human traffic, and educating the public about privacy for neighbors will be a way to go.

Ghana as asual has copying beyond. Even the westerners who introduced walls are now returning to hedges. These walls works against communalism.

Very wise piece of advice. Walls rather protects the criminals from public view.
Yet Ghanaians most of them being uncivilized continue to erect unnecessary walls around houses. Too Long man!!
