The law should be equal to all and not single out ones race, gender or nationality, nor diplomatic payback.
However the overstaying of tourist and temporary residents should be consequently tackled by the Ghana Immigration Service, their corruption is the main reason we have illegal foreigners overstaying their visa time, the risk to get caught is law and when caught they just pay "something" to the officer catching them. This same officer will never kill his daily "tips" unless ordered, checked and penalized.

By whatever criteria the Tory government may have used to determine "high risk", Ghana will fall flat into it. Many Ghanaians visit the UK and never want to leave again. So also citizens of the other countries in the test group. This cannot be denied.
Amponsah's argument was why Ghana but not other countries like China or even Kenya. But he forgot that this was a pilot project which means it does not have to include ALL the countries deemed as "high risk". When the project succeeds, it will then be extended to all "high risk" countries. This may include China, Kenya, Congo etc. Today, the UK has more to gain in trade from China than from Ghana or Nigeria and it will be unwise for them to include them on a list that the Chinese will regard as "antagonistic". This is just realpolitik.
The other argument in another article is quite convincing: the policy will fail. £3000 will not deter those who are determined to come. It will only make it a bit more difficult for them but they still will come. Another reason why the policy will fail is because the British really need a certain kind of labour - even including from Ghana. Such persons will continue to find it relatively easy to move and settle in the UK. In addition, they will find it difficult to implement the policy and when they see that it is not reducing the flow of immigrants, they will scrap it - for other measures. Another government may also just discard it. It is mostly the Tories who are so obsessed with reducing the inflow of immigrants by such crude methods. It was the Thatcher govt which imposed visa requirements on Ghana and the same countries in the present group in the early 80s. The coalition partners, the Lieberal Democrats, don't have similar immigration policies.
As for our leaders making our country good so that we don't have to go to the UK, that is a completely different matter. That is surely going to happen but not in this or the next generation. At any rate, even if Ghana were as developed, or more so, than the UK, Ghanaians will still want to travel and visit foreign lands and even stay there if they want to. But that will be for different reasons and on different conditions. Don't forget that until the early 80s, any Ghanaian who had the means could travel to the UK WITHOUT A VISA!!! That time will come again!

UK as a country can chose to implement any immigration policy it chooses.
When I come to Ghana I pay more airport tax than I go to the USA. This is because Ghana as a sovereign country chose to increase its airport tax years back. No country was able to critise that as Ghana had the right to do so.
The only way to beat this unfair policy is for Ghanians to hold their politicians to account to properly develop the country - period.

I visited a trade fair many years ago and was pleased to see the Ghana stand. However there was only one German lady, "manning" the stand. I asked her where are the Ghanaians ? and she said, "2 years ago this stand was filled with 18 Ghanaian's but only 2 returned to Ghana, so this time nobody could obtain a visa.
Look at it from 2 the bright sides, the people who will have to pay 3,000 pounds would have been refused otherwise. bright side number 2 if you realy want to go there and say fxxk the UK what is 3,000 extra, that is much cheaper and safer then travailing through the Sahara and at risk of drowning in the Mediterranean sea.

The British now uses common sense to rule others indirectly, no more gun rule. Africa has accepted to be inferior and the whites are now making policies for Africans. This is what happens when blacks with Msc degrees rush to the UK to sweep train stations and clean their toilets. Ghana can become like the UK but stupidity is the problem.

Unfortunately, or Sadly, better still, incidentally, Ghanaians will afford and and manage to pay the 3000 UK pounds. Go to the Embassy on 1 August and see the number that has paid. Dont be surprised.

The problem with us is that our people do not believe that they can make it in Ghana hence the attempt at all cost to come to the UK "to prosper" so to speak. This has led to Ghanaians already in the UK or trying to enter the UK to use all possible means to ensure that they get here or secure their status whilst in the UK. I practice immigration law and therefore come into direct contact with Ghanaians either applying to come here or those that are here trying to regularize their stay. Nothing wrong with doing that but the problem is , they use all sorts of fake documents to achieve this aim. Due to the frequency of this practice, it has now come to the notice of the Home Secretaries. They have therefore classified us as high risk citizens when it come s to these things. On another hand, there have been many attempts by Ghanaians to smuggle drugs into the UK. This is disgraceful to say the least. Many Ghanaians already living here in the UK are some of the best you can come across and the UK Government knows that as well. The obvious problem is the minority that are either smuggling drugs or using fake documentation to either enter or remain in the country. You see, Kassim, this is the reason why the UK Governmant is blacklisting Ghana as a risky nation at the moment.

iPad, I would be interested to know of the statistics sources you are drawing from in your earlier comment entitled "Not rocket science". I searched for statistics that would show that Ghana was a "high risk" country as that was also my initial assumption, however of the available relevant statistics I found, indications seemed to point to the opposite fact: that Ghana is lower a number of countries in the certain "high risk" categories and yet those countries were not listed by Britain. For more on this, see the article below, where I clearly state my sources:
