I am seriously impressed about your sense of patriotism, and God richly bless you for this open letter and the possible solutions you have put forward. You somebody that young ones like us should try to follow their footsteps, because you not only shared your knowledge on the subject matter, but made a professional suggestions as to what to do and I only hope that the NADMO boss would act on that. Mr. Portuphy has also in recent times shown that he is up to the task. Though faced with resource constrainsts and so would need professionals like this author to make the best out of the situation.

Very insightful. Thank you for the article. What then happens to all the houses then? Should they be broken down? Did we follow laid down laws before permits were granted for the various buildings to be put up? I do remember that area was gazetted as protected area during the PNDC days? What happened after that? How dangerous is the Gas? Is it something that can render unconscious people sleeping in their rooms with all windows shut and probably cause fatalities? Where do we stand on this?

Marquis,
i) What then happens to all the houses then?
Well the owners did not take advice at the time, so they will have to live with the consequences of their actions. Their best option is to keep their homes ventilated at all times. In many parts of the world, house owners who face this problem have installed giant fans, with vents to blow the gases into the atmosphere. The idea is to reduce the volume of the gases in the local area and therefore disperse them, thus reducing their effectiveness. Now with constant power supply interruptions in Ghana, I doubt if this method will work in the area.
ii) Did we follow laid down laws before permits were granted for the various buildings to be put up?
Obviously, the people who built in the area did not follow laid down procedures and regulations, and those who have the responsibility to enforce regulations did not play their pat.. In fact the caution contained in the report of the 1939 earthquake was to leave that area as a green area, no construction at all. In the 1939 earthquake, a reservoir at the top burst and flowed water down the area, into the sea for many days. Today, that avenue has been blocked by development. That is the result of our general inclination to ignore or simply disregard simple laws.
iii) I do remember that area was gazetted as protected area during the PNDC days?
Yes it has always been a protected area since 1939, or even before then.
iv) What happened after that?
One way or the order, GREDA acquired the land from the Government of Ghana, for development. Somewhere along the line, something did not jive.
v) How dangerous is the Gas?
Long term exposure to radon gas definitely has health implications, as indicated in the original article.
vi) Where do we stand on this?
The state will definitely have to take interest in it and begin to enforce mitigation measures. I sure do not envy anybody who owns a house in the area.
Have a blessed weekend.

Man should not interfere with Mother Nature. The Lake Volta project should have never occurred as it has stressed out this entire area. I fear that this area will face a geological disaster within the next 25 years.

i don't know your age but such is the truth and honesty, as well as integrity that we had in Ghana before we were invaded with dumb political propaganda to the extent that such an intelligent and practical life and death matter does not even attract punters on Ghanaweb.
If the title of your article had been NDC Kofi Portuphy taught a Class 1 Lesson, you would have had 100 comments by now, all from NDC and NPP serial well-paid bloggers.
You would by now have been insulted so much because your name alone would have been used to put you in some ethnic box, it wouldn't matter whether it was right or wrong, and none of your 'insulters' would give a damn about the truthfulness of your observations.
How I wish intelligent people like you were in charge, but that will always remain a dream in a country where the most important people, the majority, are being always 'goat-herded' to see every issue as political or tribal.
All the same, well done, anyway!!!
