KOLA, LONDON PROPER this is the kind of partisanship the author appealed against. NPP could have run a bad government under Kufour in your opinion, but now that it is also in power, what is NDC doing to arrest the malpractices if they are a better party? This current case or incidence is serious and has the potential of causing mayhem in Ghana and that is why all and sundry should kick against this myopic politics practised by both NDC and NPP. They take us for fools and that is what we must fight against. We must love Ghana more than our political and/or tribal affiliations.

Dibe, there is nothing wrong with considering both sides of the coin and drawing conclusion/s instead of being one sided. Remember that in every case there are three sides of the coin (head and tail plus the small edge, which often most people forget). I analysed each case for NDC and NPP and drew my conclusion (the small edge), that NDC's claim has no basis and should be treated with contempt that it deserves. If that makes me apologetic, that is your view.

Good morning, Amma. I listened to George Alagiah's reports on Ghana on BBC World Service and watched it on the BBC1 Tv news. I am not sure how to answer your question but it reminded me of my teenage years at Switchback Road, very close to his childhood School (Christ the King) which is between Flagstaff House and the then Star Hotel. What came to my mind on seeing the skyscraper apartments was, I hope they will be able to supply water to all the occupants (bearing in mind the water scarcity in Ghana). On the whole, the apartments were impressive. Perhaps, Ghana is not all doom and gloom as we sometimes read on the web, though that was just a minute part of (Accra)Ghana and not the whole story.
Will welcome your views and observations.

Kofi, I thought, oh boy George, bless his cotton socks! He has such a soft spot for Ghana which is all in its right place and quite emotional. My own reminiscing of childhood Tema last November filled me with sadness and forboding. Apart from the aesthetically changes(the clamouring to adopt Western consumerism without the other attendant core values) here and there a lot remain the same. I remembered Accra and Tema experiencing power rationing when I sat my Common Entrance Exams in 1984 as a 10 year old. It was a day off and a day on, today it is there but with a catchy description -dumsor dumsor. Nonetheless hope springs eternal.

Hello Kofi,
I think I like the first part of your analysis of the basic steps that ought to have been taken before the counting begins.
It is not the NDC nor the NPP that must be blamed for the lack of inventory but the referee. I agree with you that the first thing that ought to have been done was an inventory! Was it done?
If the answer to that is in the negative, that is a great disservice to the people of Ghana. Since none of the litigants could be trusted, the onus is on the referee!
It is neither the NPP nor the NDC that is turning this into a farce, but the obvious incompetence of the so-called "internationally recognized audit firm" that must take the blame!
By failing to do the right thing at the right time, the company has let the nation down! try to call a spade a spade. It amounts a a criminal negligence if no inventory was taken before the counting began!
We all know the two parties do not see eye-to-eye, that is why we needed a referee in the first place. By failing to take the appropriate measures to ensure transparency, the company has displayed an extremely grave dereliction of duty.
The fact that they have decided to do this for free does not exonerate them from attending to the task with a high sense of professional competence. Justice must not only be fair, it must be seen by all to be fair!
Reports by the KPMG officials that no inventory was taken is the crux of the problem. It does not mean that the NDC is wrong in claiming the original boxes were 24. It equally gives the NPP no basis to declare that the boxes were 31!
It only means that the people of Ghana have been let down by a referee who ought to know better. The fact that the KPMG is unable to clear the air over such a simple matter regarding number of of twenty or thirty odd boxes, undermines their ability to credibly pronounce on the issue under contention, which involve over 8,000 or 11,000 pink sheets!
We may have jokers in Ghana, but Ghana is not a joke! Ghana can only be a joke, if we all agree with you in blaming the contesting parties rather than the referee!
It is therefore neither the NDC nor the NPP that is turning the Pink Sheet Audit into a farce! It is KPMG! Your ill-fated attempt to blame the contestants rather than the referee is what makes you a joke!
Forward Ever! Backwards Never!
Sincerely,
Pur'gu Saarpe!

Hello Omanbapa,
Thank you very much for your explanation, but it does nothing to resolve the impasse. The problem is that KPMG ought to have done the first thing first: an inventory!
I wonder what procedures could have taken precedence over a simple inventory! The company needed to have first and foremost established the basic facts to the satisfaction of all.
The fact that there is a confusion without the referee being in any position to pronounce on it shows a lack of diligence on the part of the company, reputable or not!
A competent referee must be in a position to debunk any ploy by any of the contesting parties. If they know what to do, why did they not do it? How many boxes were made available for the counting? And why should Ghana be a joke and not the company in the eye of the storm? Is Ghana the referee?
Is it not the duty of the referee to make sure that such ploys are made impossible? I resent the ease with which some commentators insult the entire nation instead of putting the blame where it squarely belongs!
Forward Ever! Backwards Never!

Hi Kofi,
I am glad that you have the ability to accept your mistakes. It is a grave error to call Ghanaians as a joke because an accounting firm is not being diligent enough. However, I do vehemently disagree with you "that NDC should take the blame for not being vigilant"!
I am not apportioning some of the blame to the referee. I am apportioning ALL the blame on the referee! As you rightly pointed out,"the seriousness of this case, which has the potential to destabilise Ghana", the company ought to have positioned itself as a competent referee to provide an effective, transparent, and responsible answer to ALL issues related to the exercise!
In what way can you say the NDC has not been vigilant? Is detecting the seven additional boxes not a sign of vigilance? If the so-called referee is not in the position to confirm nor deny such a serious anomaly, whom do you blame?
Any idiot can count boxes! Do you think it is too much to ask of the company to have taken inventory of the boxes in contention? KPMG ought to be disqualified from meddling in this affair!
Due diligence requires that Justice is not only be fair, but must be seen by all to be fair! If, as you write in your article, "One would never know the answers to these questions", who must take the blame?
Has the integrity of the entire process not been compromised? Blaming the NDC for the dereliction of duty by KPMG only adds insults to the injury! Why should they even bother to count the boxes, if such a basic fact as to the number of boxes cannot be established?
Your focus on the political parties turning the pink sheet audit into a farce is unwarranted. It is the incompetence of KPMG that is rather turning this into a farce! Political commentators who refuse to call a spade a spade, preferring to call it a spoon or spanner are rather the jokers!
And you shall remain a joke if you continue to blame either party rather than the blundering and unconscionable incompetence of a firm that is supposed to know better!
Forward Ever! Backward Never!

To date, the electoral comission has been the best referee in Ghana--they satisfactorily administered several elections--which were "accepted" by all Ghanaians.
Other institutions (including the supreme court--thanks to Kuffour) cannot claim such legitimacy.
So if we can't trust, EC, SC, police, court registrar--are we now outsourcing legitimacy to a private company (KPMG)? It is all a cruel joke.
