Cuba has tens of thousands of doctors and medical personel in 104 countries,in all continents.Since 2005,over 9900 MDs from the Americas, Africa and Asia have been trained in Cuba.And as of this year,there are over 2,00 Cuban doctors in African countries,including South Africa.
Cuba also benefits from "health tourists",about 20,000 a year which include Americans,Europeans and Asians.This pumps about $40million into the economy(How many foreigners come to Ghana for medical treatment? Our doctors bungled the surgery to separate the conjoined twins in Kumasi few weeks ago.And the chief doctor did not even know they had separate organs !)
Among the 1396 graduating class at the Medical University of Havana were eleven students from the U.S. Others were from twenty two countries.
In 2000,Ghana's own Kofi Annan said:"Cuba should be the envy of many other nations", and that,"Cuba demonstrates how much nations can do with the resources they have if they focus on the right priorities - health,education,and literacy". The American Kaiser Family Foundation evaluated Cuba's healthcare system in 2001,and applauded Cuba as "a shining example of the power of public health to transform the health of an entire country by a commitment to prevention and by careful management of its medical resources". James Wolfensohn, the former President of the Wold Bank also said in 2001,that "Cuba has done a great job on education and health".
Also,the British Guardian newspaper praised the Cuban health system for its high quality in a Sept.12,2007 article.And British MPs who toured Cuba in 2001,in their report said "the success of the Cuban healthcare system "was based on its "strong emphasis on disease prevention",in addition to the "commitment to the practice of medicine in a community".
Finally,in 2006,the U.S Government created the Cuban Medical Professional Parole Program that "steals" Cuban doctors,dentists and other medical professionals and brings them to work on the mainland. So far,15000 of such professionals(doctors,dentists and nurses) are in the U.S,and the MDs are allowed to proceed with their residency before taking board exams.Already,444 graduates of Cuban medical schools have passed their board exams and have been accredited.Others are in limbo,because Cuba refuses to release their CV and transcripts - after they "jumped ship".If Americans are enticing Cuban doctors to go to the U.S.,why are ignorant fools in Ghana making noises about the government's effort to bring in Cuban doctors,to help ameriolate the health situation in Ghana?

Conditions at medical school in Cuba more closely resemble summer camp than a modern university.
“Things are very simple,” says Akua Brown, a Californian studying medicine in Havana. “You stay in a room with about eight to 18 other people. You share bunkbeds. You share a bathroom with the whole floor.”
They don’t have cars. School buses are the most popular form of locomotion.
There’s no air conditioning, and the breakfast menu never varies: bread and milk.
Despite big lifestyle adjustments, Brown and another student at the Latin American School of Medicine told an audience at Mississippi Valley State University Saturday that the chance to become a doctor outweighs any negatives.
“I have tremendous respect for the doctors and the medical students who work in Cuba,” Brown said. “They work very hard for very little pay. There, being a doctor doesn’t mean you have a fancy house and drive a Mercedes Benz. It’s because you care about your community, and you care about the people around you.”
Brown and Keasha Guerrier, a 23-year-old New Yorker, are both about to enter their fourth year of medical school, which is paid for completely by the Cuban government.
Guerrier said Americans have a skewed image of Cuba and its communist government.
“In my experience, it could be likened to a small town, the whole country, in terms of the warmth of the people, the hospitality,” she said.
Students need science coursework but not a bachelor’s degree to enter. They must be between 18 and 30 and commit to coming back to practice medicine in poor areas in the United States.
Ellen Bernstein is associate director of the Interreligious Foundation for Community Organization, which handles admissions for the Cuban scholarship program.
She said they don’t consider MCATs, the entrance exam most U.S. medical school require, and have no firm GPA requirement.
“We’re in a position where if we had 500 qualified students, we could accept them all,” Bernstein said.
The school is approved by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates, which must approve all foreign doctors.
Cuba opened it as a training opportunity for foreign students in 1998 in an old naval academy.
Students from 30 nations now attend, including about 125 from the United States.
From her first visit, Bernstein realized it was something special.
“We saw all these Nicaraguan students wearing their white lab coats and carrying around their anatomy textbooks, and we just thought, ‘Wow! Wow!’” she said. “There’s just not any other place in the world where these young people would have been given that kind of opportunity.”
The entire program is in Spanish and lasts six years, seven if you need one year of Spanish language courses.
Brown knew Spanish going in. Guerrier had taken Spanish in school but had to sharpen her conversational skills during her first year.
Students do classroom work the first two years and then do rotations for four years in a hospital. Graduates must pass a seven-hour multiple choice test after graduation before starting residencies in the United States.
About 20 potential medical students attended the conference at Valley Saturday.
Brandon Butler of Jackson wasn’t looking forward to living in a room with 18 people, but the thought of a free medical education was very appealing.
He graduated this spring from Mississippi State with a degree in biology and Spanish, so the language difference is not too big of a concern for him.
Butler has taken the MCAT but hasn’t applied to any medical schools yet. He now intends on applying to the Cuban school.
Dickie Stevens, a Humphreys County supervisor, visited the school and was impressed.
“Here, you can’t help get the impression that it’s all a mercenary motivation. Everyone’s out there to get,” he said. “In Cuba, it’s a compassionate motivation. People are there because they care about people, and they care about the future.”
Stevens said many things in Cuba didn’t impress him, especially the poverty, but he said the medical system may be better than the United States’.
Cuba has one doctor for every 168 people, he said.
Barry Campbell, chair of the biology department at Delta State, thinks the Cuban scholarship program is a great way to increase the number of doctors in Mississippi.
Campbell advises many pre-med students and knows the long odds they face getting in.
“We’re graduating only 110 medical students as physicians a year,” he said. “Think about it. That’s just how many are graduating. We didn’t say they’re all staying. A lot of them have to leave the state because they owe so much money.”
Rep. Bennie Thompson said without the pressure of student loans of more than $100,000 hanging over them, more young doctors might decide to practice in places like Itta Bena or Rolling Fork.
“There would be nothing better than to homegrow somebody and send ‘em back home and say, ‘Go to work.’”

In your post, prospective students of the Cuban medical schools are commending the system for affording them the opportunity to study medicine as had it not been for Cuba they wouldn't have realised their dream of becoming doctors because THEY COULD GET ADMISSION IN THE U.S BECAUSE OF THEIR MEDIOCRE GRADES.
If you understood your post, you would have realised that MED schools in Cuba doesn't use the MCAT exams for entry, neither does it worry about the grades of the prospective students......all that matters is getting the approval from the WORKERS PARTY.....THINK ABOUT THAT FOR ONCE!!!

Secondly they are trained to do community or public health in the community. They are not trained to the type of work our Ghanaian doctors and others do single handedly in our district hospitals, if you doubt it send them to one district hospital without a Ghanaian or similar doctor and you see them pack off in one week. Just imagine the size of Cuba and their resources and think why they produce soo much doctors even more than America, Brazil and our own South Africa? They are family and community "doctors" similar to what our public health nurses do. W e call them Public healt nurses and they call them family or community doctors. These Cuban doctors therefore cannot replace doctors based in hospitals. I urge the Ghana Medical and Dental Council to assess and evaluate these doctors before they start experimenting on Ghanaians. Gone are the days when the blackman's life was inferior to others and was experimented on.

You should have done more research on the topic before publishing your article. Check published articles and journals written by US citizens, and which have compared Cuban and US doctors. The message is clear: Cuban doctors are better trained in tropical medicine, than their American counterparts. It is sad how Ghanaians allow their political affiliations overtake academic matters.

It was also in this decade that tertiary care facilities and research received priority attention: medical specialization expanded to 55 fields, and national institutes were established to act as national reference centers (centers of excellence).
The remarkbale thing about Cuban healthcare/doctors is that with the exception of the 1992-93 neuropathy epidemic (5) and a few “early warning signs” such as increased low birth weight - Cuban health indicators held the line. In some cases, especially as the island began to find its way out of its economic crisis, they actually improved in healthcare to the envy of even the USA.
For instance, infant mortality as 10.7 per 1,000 live births in 1990, down to 9.4 by 1995, and to 7.2 by 2000. Under-five mortality shows the same pattern: 13.2 in 1990, 12.5 in 1995, and 11.1 by 2000. Only life expectancy dipped slightly during the worst years: 75.2 in 1989, 74.8 in 1995, and back up to 76 by 2000. (Source: Annual Statistical Yearbook, Ministry of Public Health, Havana, 2003).

They do not look at the larger picture. The NDC Governments are continuing with this unpopular recruitment of second rate Cuban Doctors. Those of us who have worked with them know their competence which leaves much to be desired. Very few are ok, the majority having knowledge and competence at par with medical Assistants. If we insist on recruiting them we must at least go for the good ones and test them before being allowed to practice here. We at least owe that to the people. After all our boys and girls who qualify from outside universities are tested before they are licensed to practice in this country. As I said earlier, the Cuban Doctors are not the solution long term. We shouldn't allow ourselves to be dumped with the scraps because we get them so cheap. I wonder which of the politicians will entrust their lives to these Doctors. Our doctors are better trained and superior! Stop this crap, Mr. President!

U r getting ur salaries alright with all the premiums and allowances attached to it so what's with the strike action? The govt thought it wise to save the sick from dying (since all pleas to ur insensitive selves have fallen on deaf ears) by calling on cuba to help us and now u don't want that to be happening. I am not saying u shouldn't get ur arrears but can u work and resolve that issue at the same time? One doc said they didn't swear oath of poverty. I just shook my head in disbelief. Which doc is poor in Ghana? Do u docs have any heart at all? Withdrawing emergency services? No wonder one of ur own came out to say ur strikes r as a result of mental instability. I have also contacted many highly qualified public heath experts in US and Europe who have praised Cuba's extra-ordinary contributions to the advancement of world health which is on a par with the word of MSF -Doctors without Border
However false reports have often been circulated by those who hate to admit that Cuba is a country that successfully demonstrates an effective health system as a public service not only for Cubans but it generously shares its medical resources with the world.
