Mr Baidoo what do suggest as the solution when a corrupt and lawless government refuses to relinquish power for obvious reasons, partuculary if that government gargantuanlly continues to bribe the Electoral commissioner to rig elections in its favour? What is happening in Ghana under NDC is the same or similar to what happened in Libya, Tunisia, Egypt, Syria, Zimbabwe,Zaire under Mobutu, Uganda under Iddi Amin etc etc. Do Ghanaians have to keep quiet until our country is totally destroyed? I hope you will be honest in answering my questions. Have a nice day.

Lodon-based writer, Baidoo, goes soft on the imperfections of the British and American systems.
The Ghanaians abroad tend to present their host countries as paragons, even if activists in those countries see similar manifestations of those problems Baidoo does not want to see.
My belief is that lawmakers are a class unto themselves, wherever u go. It is a universal weakness of 'elections,' but Writer Baidoo does not want our people to know.
He will help us better if he tells us of the underground means by which law makers in England and the US make extra money. But we know why he will never do that. He is afraid of his masters abroad.

we are all witnesses to the lies and maliciously abominable agendas of the ewe mafia ruling by proxy today. in as much as the claim to be wanting to do the right think they are incompetent and amateur in everything they undertake to do . half his appointees lack any proper experience and this is their first real job, their actions instead of bringing unity have caused divisions to deepen and even new ones appear . after 20 years of work the npp allowed a fool like kuffuor to rule for 8 years and are now paying very dearly the price of his attempt to impose ahanti domination over the rest of the Akans thus enabling the return of the ndc woe on Ghana. pepeni has copied his partner in crime's style and appointed mainly minority muslim alajihs and ewe mischief s . after this mandate never again will a corrupt , wicked , evil northerner , ewe or ashanti be given the opportunity to lead us no matter what party platform they stand on . the attitude of me and my tribesmen against the Akans and other Ghanaian s will never pass again as its been exposed and we are all now much wiser . yes they will not have an easy ride chopping our money and we will make sure they answer for all their crimes sooner or later

Depending on where one stands, one can make smug prescriptions as to what kind of solution this country needs to get itself out of the rut. And by the rut I mean the two criminal organizations who have monopolized power for their exclusive interests only for the past 40 odd years in various forms.
At the bottom of Philip Kobina Baidoo's article, he reveals that he is probably living in London. Thats fine but I wish he would restrict himself to finding solutions to problems where he has chosen to live and not to prescribe face-over solutions of problems of where he lives over to us in Ghana.
Obviously Kobina doesnt think far or deep enough in spite of his, I must admit, beautifully written article. He also seems to be suffering from some kind of memory or educational relapse when he laughably states that "Much of the corrosive political animosity that exists in our society can be traced to the violent military takeovers in the past." That is not true. My take on this is that much of the corrosive political animosity that exists in our society can be traced squarely to the terrorism of the 'Mate me ho', the 'Ga shifimo kpe' and UP traditions that wreaked untold chaos on the people of this country even before we managed under the most dificult resistance of these same groups to scuttle it.
They, even more than Rawlings, did more to shatter the moral fabric of Ghanaian society. And they were not a military or a paramilitary organization. They went on, with the assistance of foreign agents and disgruntled elements in the military to instigate the mother of all coup d'etats that effectively rendered null and void the independence of Ghana as well as the momentum to liberate the entire Black race from the clutches of imperialist domination. To date, Ghana, nor the entire Black race, has recovered from that 'gargantuan' reversal of fortunes.
And you Kobina, sitting out there in the comfort of your haven in London, you want us to bear with you and wait for another unbearable three years to vote out the incompetent Mahama govt and replace it with the one that committed the most offensive violation against the hopes and aspirations of the entire Black race? Are you serious? To begin with, it is not likely that the Mahama govt can be defeated in elections by the overly elitist and equally criminal NPP group.
Just last week, they were out there in typical fashion, demonstrating and pleading to their colonial 'masters' at No. 10 Downing Street ostensibly to save them (and all of us) from the dour political situation in Ghana. The cheek of it. It seems that they have not had enough of the slavery, colonialism and racial and economic domination. They really love their slave masters dont they?
You say that "When people refuse to think they resort to barbarism to survive." Well my friend, if you care to know, Ghanaians are actually living in a barbaric situation now and they dont like it. I dare you Kobina Baidoo, if you are man enough, to come down to your roots in Ghana and spend just a day or two living in one of the hovels and shacks at Chorkor, La, Accra central, Nima, Gbegbeisei, Russia, Korle Gonno and the many other places where over 80% of the population in Accra, the capital city of our country, live. Forget about those who live in other parts of the country who have never had the privilege of ever seeing - much more, visiting a hospital for treatment before. We will see if after that you can have the guts, the nerve and the effrontery to spew out some of your flowery and elitist prescriptions you have laid out.
This nonsense about military regimes not performing well is complete balderdash. Objectively speaking, the worse govts we have had in this country were the Kotoka/Afrifa, Busia, Rawlings, Mills, and Mahama (so far). The best included Acheampongs military rule which falls second to that of the First Republic. For some of us we dont give a damn if it is a military or civilian govt so long as good sense and development for all, prevails. 90% of Ghanaians dont give a damn about democracy if for all these years it has achieved zilch for them - and can you blame them? It is rather small time romantics like you you have managed to get on the first few rungs on the ladder of the middle class who desperately want to protect the status quo for their exclusive and parochial interests. It is only people like you who are interested in maintaining this evil corrupt system which is just a rehashed version of the old sinful slave system where only the rich and the powerful rule and have access to the resources of state.
The hard truth is that Ghana is going nowhere under the current circumstances. Perhaps some of you who have continued to benefit from the largess of the screaming levels of corruption, nepotism and crime think that the country is heading somewhere - and I cant blame you. However the hard truth is that we are retrogressing in such a vicious manner that it aint funny.
As a person who proudly lives in his own country, I can assure you that more people are suffering and dying from the criminal ineptitude of the so-called democratic system we find ourselves in than under any military rule that we have managed to endure.
I will find time to appropriately react to some of the comments in your article. This was just in passing.

I like your drive and passion, and you argue case very well. I hope the people who matter will read such an authentic voice. However, I want to make it clear that I don’t suffer from any educational or memory relapse. I deliberately left out the secessionist part of our history, because majority of my readers did not experience that epoch in our past. And of course I want sleeping dogs to lounge. On the other hand, 1979 and 1981 are still fresh in their memory, which they can identify with. The problem I have with military takeover and your use of numbers regarding living standards, once someone comes to solve your numbers another person will also have different figures as unacceptable, and where does it end. I am very exhausted today so I don’t have the attention span to write a lengthy rebuttal.

Kwame Appiah, I guess we see as fair when NPP won 2 cosecutive elections with this same EC. The 2012 election is being disputed in court. We should let the court settle the case. Almost all those clamoring for a coup are comfortably living in "ABUROKYIRE". I have the feeling you are one of them. You are saying "Damn the consequence" because you know you are safe in Aburokyire. Both the NPP and NDC are corrupt. A coup d'etat is the last thing we need. The problems we are facing as a nation are directly linked with the past coups. The best solution, in my opinion, is a Ghanaian uprising, a Ghanaian "Arab Spring". Are those of us hiding comfortably in Aburokyire ready to lead the way? It remains to be seen.

Lets be truthful to ourselves, these two political Parties have been cheating and out-cheating themselves at elections only to get into power to loot the resources of state. Otherwise for what other purpose can they proudly account for the past 40 years? For me it is amazing that people like Kobina who seems to be excessively literate, cannot see that we have hit the terminal stage of political decay. The whole thing needs to be scuppered and started afresh. Period! The overwhelming reaction of contributors alone should inform all of us of the level of frustration being faced by the Ghanaian public.
As far as I am concerned and I see, it is only the individuals that I have voted for in the past 30-40 years, whose lives and living standards have glamorously improved under very curious circumstances.
When I look around me today, everything else in the public domain is in a state of abject disrepair, decaying or destroyed. Today when they hold award ceremonies for best corporate businesses, fewer and fewer indigenous businesses make it to the top ranks. How can it be that one cannot be proud and the best in his/her own country in anything that we do? If foreign businesses continue to dominate our economy what it simply means is that we have given up the country to those foreign entities and their local lackeys and that we dont in reality have a country anymore that we can proudly thump our chest and claim as our own.
When I was young, the incidence of a power outage was as rare as finding a polar bear strolling on the Labadi beach. Yesterday in one day alone, the power tripped off more than six times. Educational standards have fallen so low that graduates cannot even write application letters to get jobs.
Let us just look at the quality of expression by our Parliamentarians and Ministers of state. Shameful, to say the least. Dont we all feel ashamed of ourselves? And dont we all think that its about time we begin to think outside the box?
Have we all realized that in spite of the monumental and dizzying amounts of cash spent at elections by the two notorious Parties, the Electoral Commission has still not found it necessary to activate or invoke the law that compels all Parties to reveal their sources of funding? One may ask why??? And the answer is not too far to find. They have also been subsumed into the corruption racket. So now, how and when are we going to clean up the mess in the political domain? Using the same old corrupt institutions? Give us a break Kobina.
Listen all of you, what we need to do is to clean-up the entire stables and possibly start afresh. Nothing good can possibly come out of what is currently going on in the political domain of Ghana. We need the big stick to clean the shit. A man who is down fears no downfall.

I think your presentation was very good and even though I found some parts of it irritating, clearly because in 'my view', your political orientation is slightly askewed, I think that you should actually write write a book on social and political issues - along the same lines as your article. You are a damn good writer.
Back to the subject at hand. Let me inform you that I live in a part of Accra where there was hardly ever a shortage of water or electricity. However today as we speak, almost sixty years after independence, water has not flowed through our taps for the last 5 months or so. The pains, the inconveniences and the difficulties associated with the arrangements to get water for a myriad of everyday domestic uses is another heartbreaking story that need not be told here and now.
Everyday, the lights randomly go off. I havent had household gas to buy for the past 3 weeks since ours got finished. There is no health delivery services because doctors are on strike and many other institutions are threatening to also go on strike and pull back their services. I really do not know what others need to see before they realize the hard truth of the situation we find ourselves in. The country has actually collapsed.
Ghanaians have reluctantly but quietly been reduced to stone age conditions of survival by a Party and govt whose foreign, agric, economic, trade, sports health and other govt policies are all "ide be ke-ke". I mean it is difficult to imagine that this is the same Ghana that we all grew up in. Yes, we have had similar inept govts like the Afrifa/Kotoka, kufuor, Rawlings and Limann govts in the past but as for this one dee, I beg oh!
