You seem to have a strange idea about "the image" of Ghana abroad. You think if Akufo-Addo is really fake and we are discussing this openly, it will hurt the image of Ghana? Who really cares? What is wrong with a government that appoints an Attorney General in the genuine belief that he is an accredited lawyer? The Germans appointed a Defence Minister whose PhD thesis was plagiarised. When it was realised, the guy resigned without a dent in Germany's image abroad. These things happen in all countries. I am sure it will even be worse in Nigeria where the love of titles is even greater.
This case is important for us as Ghanaians. It has to be resolved for probity to prevail in our public life. We need openness on the part of our public officers. If Akufo is caught, others will be afraid of doing the same thing. Even if he comes out victorious, that fear will still be sown in the public imagination and it will deter potential offenders.
The thing about Akufo-Addo benefiting from his parental connections is not just the usual help from your family man. The question is if that help consisted of taking a short cut that breaks the law or laid down regulations. Then it becomes a criminal help. If two people apply for a job for which they are both equally qualified and one is taken because the chairman of the interview panel is a distant relative, then no law may have been broken. But if the one chosen is not qualified for the job or far less qualified than the one not chosen, then a regulation may have been broken.
My own position is that this case should be tried in court so that all Ghanaians can see who is right and who is being malevolent. I am afraid that this case may be settled out of court and Ghanaians will be none the wiser for it.

Your question should rather be how Nana's name got into the GLC's book in Ghana to enable him practice. Justice Kpegah himself has not doubted Nana's qualification as a lawyer from the Middle Temple. Some of you are just only making noise and thereby exposing your ignorance. Kpegah's case is simple: that Nana is impersonating WAD who was trained as a lawyer in the Middle Temple. It is up to Nana to prove otherwise. The issue is not about where he trained in the UK. It is about how Nana became a lawyer in Ghana so Kofi Atta has not proved anything as far as Kpegah's suit is concerned.

You claimed Nana Addo and the NPP failed to seize on the possibility that Nana Addo may have been withdrawn from Oxford because of his father's financial circumstances following his dismissal as Chief Justice by Nkrumah. Personally, I believe this is what happened because I heard this story from a very informed source long ago before the 2012 Oxford affair. But I'm sure if Nana Addo and the NPP had come out to admit that, Kofi Ata would have been the first person to seize on the admission to level further accusations that the wealth of the Akufo-Addo family was made illegally when Edward became President of Ghana.
However, I agree with Kofi Ata that Nana Addo attract so much hatred because of the perception that he had ridden on his father's connections. But this is ridiculous. Many of the people in high places, including Mahama, are there because of their parents' connections. But for his father's role as a politician in the Nkrumah government, would Mahama even have gotten to becoming a minister in the Rawlings government? In fact, in spite of his his father being a prominent politician, what was Mahama's academic and professional record before he joined the NDC government? This is the real crux of the matter. Not everyone with a silver spoon in his mouth succeeds. Nana Addo did not only ride on his father's connections, he also worked hard to become an accomplished advocate. Indeed, part of the hatred he attracts arises from his success. You may recount Tsatsu's academic wizardry, Mills' scholarship, but neither of these outstanding individuals can ever claim to be in the same league with Nana Addo when it comes to the real practice of the law.
Yet, you have NDC propagandists going around telling the Ghanaian masses Nana Addo thinks the presidency is his birth right? Did they say the same when he was fighting dictators in the law courts while others were hiding in the skirts of their wives? Isn't every Ghanaian of the right age and of sound mind entitled to contest to become President. NDC propaganda is just annoying!

My second question is now, we all know from your article that Nana Akufo-Addo was called to The Middle Temple as well as to The English Bar. You emphasized silence as golden and rightfully so it is indeed. But, Akufo Addo’s law certificate and the brouhaha surrounding it have left a lot in shock. One must not forget that, this case came about in the wee days of 2007 and he could have simply clarified his status before the electorate.
Instead, he played Mr. Calculus and together with his lieutenants, collectively waved the witch hunt parables until “Rescuer Uncle Atta Mills” came to his aid and curtailed the matter for a peaceful atmosphere to prevail on his watch. Now it has surfaced again and who is to blame? In fact, they say, one can not show or give-out what one does not have. An undeniable fact before all until the High Court proves otherwise.

Kofi, I thank you for this article and for making your position clear. I have always respected your views although I do not necessarily share all of them (90% of the time we are on the same side). I know you are well-meaning and a true Ghanaian patriot. Somehow there are people who will always regard you (and I for that matter) as leaning to one side or the other (as it suits them) for seeking the truth or trying to address issues.
Please be true to yourself and (although it is right to respond to your detractors) stick to your guns. Your integrity is not at stake in my opinion. I have personally condemned this whole attempt to 'discredit' Akufo Addo no matter how those on this mission "dress up the chicken".
To me, I really don't care if the guy has any qualifications or not as long as he is the right person to lead the country. I just happen to believe he is NOT the right person and his party is NOT the right party to lead the whole country at this point in time (but that is just my honest opinion as an analyst and political commentator). I am accused of being a "northern sympathiser", "tribalistic" and what have you, but no one praises when I condemn "northerners" in government, the opposition and support "southerners" who are being attacked.
Somehow the detractors cannot, and will not believe that I am WHOLLY averse to tribalism and do not operate with that mindset, and they will not believe all my arguments that my friends span the length and breadth of the country, I speak at least 5 Ghana languages fluently (and understand others well) etc.
So, what do we do? Just continue to speak the truth, dig up evidence and display it, whatever they say. Please, please, please, don't allow them to distract you. We need voices such as yours in the media otherwise we leave it to the 'dogs and hyenas' who bark, bite and make empty noises for their own narrow interest groups.

Hi I have two issues here.
One, the Middle Temple is not a public institution and so not covered by FOI Act. I tried using FOI request the year the issue first cropped up but they turned me down on the basis that I have mentioned. What I am trying to say you will not have got anywhere with an FOI request. (however, some non public institutions may be subjected to FOI request though).
Two: We are not in dispute with AK attendance at Middle Temple. It is on his CV that he was there from 1969 to 1971. It is also in the records of the Honourable Society, no dispute about that. I guess AK must have used his qualifying certificate from MT to gain access to the Law School in Ghana to enable him to practice in the Ghana. But there is no record of him attending Law school in Ghana. To practice law in Ghana one need to have enrolled in the Ghana Law school for at least two years subject to a waiver you discussed in one of your previous articles.
Unlike the NOTE from Middle Temple which states the year AK was specially admitted to read law, the NOTE from Ghana Legal Council did not mention when he was admitted to the Law School in Ghana. AK did not sign the register which is requirement of all qualifying students. Why is this so?
However, retired Justice Kpegah's case is not dependent on the argument we are making. His beef with AK is about impersonation (WAD aka WED aka Nana; and the legality of his firm). Who is Agyeman Dua Prempeh? This man is not on the roll of qualified legal practitioners in Ghana. What legal status has he to set up a legal practice in Ghana?
