Comrade Explo,
This is indeed a very good account of the political dynamism in Ghana from the 1980s, except for the typesetting problems. Somehow the "t's" kept dropping from "the", "this" and some other connective words that disappeared; errors which might challenge the comprehension of those who are not old grammarians.:-) Not seen Part 1 but if already posted, I'd search for it to read.
Indeed, I wasn't at all surprised as to what happened to the Left under the PNDC. I expected it and hence didn't sign up when the coup happened, even though I was on vacation in Ghana then; from my teaching job in Nigeria. There was no way I was going to join any so-called "Moral Revolution", after having graduated in Pol. Science and read all those Marxist literature and the warnings of Marx himself against the German "Marxists", who made Marx declared in frustration that if what they were advocating was Marxism, then he Karl Marx wasn't a Marxist! And distortions, Engels devoting his life after Marx's death, trying to correct!
I was actively involved in the immediate post June 4th events, just as student activism before it as a member of PANYMO, and witnessed the split into the June 4 Movt. and MONAS, and was in the centre stage of the threats they started issuing at each other, people who were friends a few months earlier. Yeah! I had some heated debates with even Kwaku Baako, Kwasi Agbley and Adu Larbi won! Kofi T was the umpire and since we were Philosophy students too, we put one argument in logical postulates and asked him to get it evaluated at the Philosophy Dept by a snr. Phew! I had a bet with the MONAS members, my friends and mates, as to who would be shot! The rest is history! Hmm! The impression I had was that, had the Boakye Djan faction come to power, Ghana might have become more like Ethiopia under Mengistu! The right-wingers should forever be grateful to Rawlings!
Whereas MONAS, with their Patron, Osahene Boakye Djan, was ideologically more correct on the political economy of the neo-colonial state, and thus argued for abrogating the ongoing political process to return Ghana to civilian rule under either the PNP or PFP, or even UNC, they were wrong on seeing Rawlings as just a political lightweight due to his ideological bankruptcy, and so should be ignored in future plans for the Left. As for the June 4th Movt, they were mere opportunists with petite bourgeois ambitions! I pitched camp with Nubuor but the threats against us were too much so he stopped writing his tracts which I used make copies with the help of some workers at the Registry and paste in the halls at night and distribute at the Ministries.
Of course, you've been reading me for a long time saying that the pro-Nkrumaist forces within the CPP, PNC, etc, are delusional and would continue to lose elections divided as they are, and with no radical, state-centred agenda other than repeating the free market platitudes of the NPP and NDC, as Dr Sankara did during the debates. Now, I call them delusional nincompoops! They are just time wasters!
