The growing disparity between the rich and poor in Africa is terrifying. Governments in Africa have failed to bridge the gap between rich and poor because they have failed to address core socio-economic issues through the implementation of policies and sustainable programs that address bead-and-butter issues. Despite the growing so-called rich and middle income economies, what is the average per capita income of most African countries? Paradoxically, Africans cannot seem to stop fighting unnecessary wars! At any point in time, there is one war or other raging on the continent. How could there be sustainable development without peace? Africans can and should do better!!

That's true, we have to improve so many things. But the question is HOW do we improve those things? What should we do now differently from what we did in the past? What concrete steps must we take? It's not enough to say we should improve our universities. Everybody knows that. What we don't know is how to do that. Your nice article is quiet on that.
But thanks for not writing about tribalism, Akufo-Addo.

Dr A.K Kennedy, this is very thoughtful. Africa is not only blessed with mineral resources but has some of the refined and accomplished intellectuals and scholars: economists, scientists, engineers, and analyts in the world. Yet, the continent's development faces tremendous challenges. We simply lack patriotic and progressive leadership to initiate sustained policies, institutions and programmes to accelerate growth and development.

Africa's problems are not the result of lack of human, natural or material resources but rather the problems of corruption and weak institutions. Sometimes, when I read or hear about Ghana being an example for others in Africa, I wonder how such conclusions are drawn. For example, I read in the Guardian on Sunday that world poverty is being reduced at a faster rate than expected. Some of the factors that accounted for this rapid eradication or reduction of poverty were access to water and electricity. Guess what? Ghana was among some of the countries among others in Africa that this was happening.
I wonder if the authors of the report really know what is happening in Ghana. This is a report for the World Bank and I have been trying to get in touch with the authors to find out how they concluded Ghana as having reduced poverty faster than expected because of access to water and electricity when in reality, even people in urban and metropolitan Ghana do not have regular access to both.

Personally i think that Africa and people of african descent need a menatl revolution.
We need a change in attitudes and mentality. We need to have an african centered thinking.
When we are looking up to Europe
When we are looking for industries we are looking for europe
When we are looking up for names to name our children we are looking up to europe.
When we are looking for statistics we are looking for magazines such as forbes, the guardian, etc.
Even if for researching history we are looking up to Europe. For example we know more about the french revolution than about the history of Timbuktu.
Even in Europe and the americas people of african descent have the highest number of school dropouts, bad health, crime rates etc.
Have u ever seen a brand that is in the ownership of africans? produced and marketed by africans and consumed worldwide?
we blacks want to be....
musicians but not the owners of a music label
actors but not owners of a tv station.
so one of our problem is ownership.
Even for choosing languages we want to choose an african over an european one.
So the key problem is that we always look up to Europe and not in africa.
Africa has many enginneers, scientist but politicians always look for western or asian experts. One example was the STX housing provided by Korean Architects. Dont we have Ghanaian or other african architects ?At the end they will be payed with a huge large sums of money.
So what africa needs is a mental revolution . And reaching this revoultion is by educating people.

Insightful! Africa is indeed a continent of two extremes: very wealthy and very poor at the same time. How and when the gap between the two can/will be narrowed still lies in the skies!
