The rule against such dangerous acts is there to prevent tragedies and career ending moments. Intention is irrelevant; hockey players for example don't complain when penalised for 'high sticks' because the rule is unconditional and everyone knows this.
It's time Man U start respecting the rules. They arelucky their players did not get further punishments for clapping in the referees face at the end. It was a red card so stop the strops and get on with winning the premier title.

Obviously, the referee erred by showing Nani red card but Manchester United did not help themselves by their immediate reaction of anger and self-pity. Both the Coach and the players were all very angry at the referee showing much self-pity. And by this, the team lost concentration but briefly. It was this that gave Real Madrid the window of chance to score 2 goals in just 3 minutes. As soon as Manchester United came out of this dark hole of self pity, their superiority was restored in spite of their numerical disadvantage.
My observation is that, this Manchester United squad is so much overflowing with quality players that even with 10 men against Real Madrid's 11, they could still have qualified had they not fallen into those 3 minutes of anger and self pity. A team in which even an uninjured Rooney would be on the bench is indeed a great team. It is bad for them to be eliminated.
What all teams should know is that, a referee is absolutely unchallengeable in the course of a match. So no matter how unjust a referee's decision is, the team must concentrate and play the match. A good team can afford to play even 9 or 10 men against their opponent's 11 if they don't pity themselves and get angry at the referee.

EUFA matches are different and it's noticeable that MU hardly performs creditably when faced with real competition and unbiased referees. Nani ricly deserved two red cards for planting the studs into the ribcage st of Arbeloa and MU should take their defeat deservingly!!
