Independence brought so much hope to ghanaians but it was shortlived .An unwholesome mix of tribalism, sectionalism, party politics and widespread poverty combined to snuff the life out of our new found hope and enthusiasm. Instead of harnessing our abundant natural and human resources to fight the common enemy, the battle lines were drawn between the main political parties and we started fighting each other and drifted apart as a people. Opinions vary as to who is to blame but it always takes two to tango. People began identifying themselves by their political party affiliation and by their tribes instead of as ghanaians. The colonialists prayed and wished we fail in our nation building attempt just to justify the balkanization and colonization of Africa .Our failure would also prove we are incapable of governing ourselves. We played into the traps they had set for us.
The struggle for power among the political parties and tribal/sectional rivalries took a short break during those years the military intervened in national politics. They have since resumed with unabated untensity .
Now, instead of the politicians uniting a divided nation they have taken advantage of the serious cracks in our walls and are hastenibg to turn the cracks into gaping holes. It's amazing how quickly the politicians, in their quest for power adopted the european colonialists "divide and conquer" policy, pitting one group against another. For now it seems like it's a fait accompli. The nation is so polarised and divided that it'd take a massive generational change in leadership to bring transformation in the lives of ghanaians and re-unite the nation .
I'd like to suggest that we reinstate "Yen ara asase ni" as the national anthem. It evokes a nationalistic spirit. The anthem can be translated into all languages and dialects so no one will need to learn to sing it in another man's language/dialect.
Whilst we search and wait for the messiah we should beware of the self serving politician who bangs the drums of tribalism and sectionalism in order to whip the people into a tribalistic and sectional fervor just to win political power.
