Mind you, democracy is a process, the elements of which include a fair, free, transparent elections which allow people to choose whoever they wish to represent them. As to whether the process works e.lg. that a constituency would choose the right person to represent their interests and concerns for example, or that people will use their influence (e.g. money, family name etc.) to win the trust of the people; or that the government emerging from democratic elections would do what they promised is another matter. The failings of those who represent us in delivering what they promised, does not make the nation less democratic. Would you argue that the stalemate in the US Congress at the moment where both parties are dug in on their side of the argument and compromise is so hard to achieve is healthy for "democracy"? Would you therefore on that basis argue that America is not a democracy? or India? or the UK for that matter? How would you class Greece and Italy after "Technocrats" were appointed to head their governments which were in a complete mess, and in the case of Greece, the concerted conspiracy of the EU and the use of propaganda to elect those they believed would follow through with their "austerity prescriptions"? By the way, democracy originated from Greece. Would you class them as democratic now? So, to go back to your question, if we take Greece as an example from Europe where there have been elections, one would argue seriously that classifying it as a democracy will be very difficult. You indeed pose an intellectual question.
However if you ask me about Ghana, I would argue that its successive elections and the processes that have been put in place that have ensured stability and some semblance of good governance and progressive is a healthy democracy. However I can tell you the NPP is trying to destroy all that now not with their petition in court, but their 'outside court shenanigans' which threaten to undermine the very thing - Democracy that we have fought so hard to achieve.

Dear Sylvester, I must applaud you for a nice article. A very easy to read one. However, coming to one of the latter paragraphs I seem to have a bit of difficulty with your definition of human rights abuse with respect of ban on drumming and noise making at certain times. I thing this ban should have no limitation if you consider the sort of nuisance it is to our whole wellbeing. Kindly come again Sir. Thank you.

Thanks for the script. but saying "democracy is a process" does not mean that there is point where you will say you finally reached the democracy you were fighting for. As far as the process is started, you have started your democratic credentials and is left with that nation to tender that democracy to a matured one. More as we are practicing this Representative democracy, we will encounter these challenges talked of as we grow. when the freedom of speech is intensified, then we get more solutions and ideas as to how many of the problems will be tackled.
