February 24, 1966: President of Ghana Toppled in CIA-Backed Coup'.Documents Expose U.S. Role in Nkrumah Overthrow
By Paul Lee
Declassified National Security Council and Central Intelligence Agency documents provide compelling, new evidence of United States government involvement in the 1966 overthrow of Ghanaian President Kwame Nkrumah.
The coup d'etat, organized by dissident army officers, toppled the Nkrumah government on Feb. 24, 1966 and was promptly hailed by Western governments, including the U.S.
The documents appear in a collection of diplomatic and intelligence memos, telegrams, and reports on Africa in Foreign Relations of the United States, the government's ongoing official history of American foreign policy.
Prepared by the State Department's Office of the Historian, the latest volumes reflect the overt diplomacy and covert actions of President Lyndon B. Johnson's administration from 1964-68. Though published in November 1999, what they reveal about U.S. complicity in the Ghana coup was only recently noted.
Allegations of American involvement in the putsche arose almost immediately because of the well-known hostility of the U.S. to Nkrumah's socialist orientation and pan-African activism.
Nkrumah, himself, implicated the U.S. in his overthrow, and warned other African nations about what he saw as an emerging pattern.
"An all-out offensive is being waged against the progressive, independent states," he wrote in Dark Days in Ghana, his 1969 account of the Ghana coup. "All that has been needed was a small force of disciplined men to seize the key points of the capital city and to arrest the existing political leadership."
"It has been one of the tasks of the C.I.A. and other similar organisations," he noted, "to discover these potential quislings and traitors in our midst, and to encourage them, by bribery and the promise of political power, to destroy the constitutional government of their countries."
A Spook's Story
While charges of U.S. involvement are not new, support for them was lacking until 1978, when anecdotal evidence was provided from an unlikely source—a former CIA case officer, John Stockwell, who reported first-hand testimony in his memoir, In Search of Enemies: A CIA Story.
"The inside story came to me," Stockwell wrote, "from an egotistical friend, who had been chief of the [CIA] station in Accra [Ghana] at the time." (Stockwell was stationed one country away in the Ivory Coast.)
Subsequent investigations by The New York Times and Covert Action Information Bulletin identified the station chief as Howard T. Banes, who operated undercover as a political officer in the U.S. Embassy.
This is how the ouster of Nkrumah was handled as Stockwell related. The Accra station was encouraged by headquarters to maintain contact with dissidents of the Ghanaian army for the purpose of gathering intelligence on their activities. It was given a generous budget, and maintained intimate contact with the plotters as a coup was hatched. So close was the station's involvement that it was able to coordinate the recovery of some classified Soviet military equipment by the United States as the coup took place.
According to Stockwell, Banes' sense of initiative knew no bounds. The station even proposed to headquarters through back channels that a squad be on hand at the moment of the coup to storm the [Communist] Chinese embassy, kill everyone inside, steal their secret records, and blow up the building to cover the facts.
Though the proposal was quashed, inside the CIA headquarters the Accra station was given full, if unofficial credit for the eventual coup, in which eight Soviet advisors were killed. None of this was adequately reflected in the agency's records, Stockwell wrote.
Confirmation and Revelation
While the newly-released documents, written by a National Security Council staffer and unnamed CIA officers, confirm the essential outlines set forth by Nkrumah and Stockwell, they also provide additional, and chilling, details about what the U.S. government knew about the plot, when, and what it was prepared to do and did do to assist it.
On March 11, 1965, almost a year before the coup, William P. Mahoney, the U.S. ambassador to Ghana, participated in a candid discussion in Washington, D.C., with CIA Director John A. McCone and the deputy chief of the CIA's Africa division, whose name has been withheld.
Significantly, the Africa division was part of the CIA's directorate of plans, or dirty tricks component, through which the government pursued its covert policies.
According to the record of their meeting (Document 251), topic one was the "Coup d'etat Plot, Ghana." While Mahoney was satisfied that popular opinion was running strongly against Nkrumah and the economy of the country was in a precarious state, he was not convinced that the coup d'etat, now being planned by Acting Police Commissioner Harlley and Generals Otu and Ankrah, would necessarily take place.
Nevertheless, he confidently—and accurately, as it turned out—predicted that one way or another Nkrumah would be out within a year. Revealing the depth of embassy knowledge of the plot, Mahoney referred to a recent report which mentioned that the top coup conspirators were scheduled to meet on 10 March at which time they would determine the timing of the coup.
However, he warned, because of a tendency to procrastinate, any specific date they set should be accepted with reservations. In a reversal of what some would assume were the traditional roles of an ambassador and the CIA director, McCone asked Mahoney who would most likely succeed Nkrumah in the event of a coup.
Mahoney again correctly forecast the future: Ambassador Mahoney stated that initially, at least, a military junta would take over.

Ghanaian's always blame Ashantis for everything.Like Americans blaming Al Capone for the Chicago fire and everything.
The Overthrow of Kwame Nkrumah was an ewe Conspiracy.General Kotoka was on the CIA payroll and help disarm Lumumba's troops.
As a saying goes that any "shark that taste blood is easy to pounce on a blood that smell miles away"
Harlley and his nephew were all paid agents of the CIA.
They had used Police officer Ametepe an ewe to assassinate Nkrumah but the plan was foiled when Nkrumah escaped death.
They had an Achiase jungle conspiracy to eliminate Nkrumah but he did not show up.
The Ashanti's were less than 1% in the Army because they concentrated on business. The Ewes,Hausa's and the Northerners dominated the Army so the Alakple Ewe gang of Harley and Kotoka were friends of Franklin Williams an African American CIA agent.
It was Franklin Williams that influenced them with money.

Please do not take hearsay statements for fact.
Definitely Kwame Nkrumah being a mortal soul had his fault. That said, he is the best leader we ever had and from the look of things, he is the best we will ever have. And if that is the case at hand, the majority will always talk about him in a Godlike manner.
Thank you.

They say you can't judge the book by its cover but Juhn Mahama is an exception to the rule. The NDC administration led by Mills inherited a middle income economy, a number of social intervention programs, and best of all the discovery of crude oil in commercial quantities from the outgoing NPP administration. They had the best chance to succeed but in 4 short years they have borrowed more money from external sources more than all previous administrations put together, starting from Nkrumah and the mismanaged economy is in a fre fall. Corruption has reached giddying heights under their watch with government negotiating dubious out of court judgement debt settlements to their cronies. When most ghanaians living under the poverty line were struggling but failing in most cases to just afford one square meal a day,Mahama and his NDC grave looters increased their salaries by huge margins, and engaged in unbridled profligate spending. God blessed us and through the efforts of the Kuffour administration we found oil. Today we export crude oil but doesn't it strike you as odd that despite having an oil refinery in Tema this administration finds it necessary to import finished petrol to Ghana at great cost to the nation instead of refining some of the crude oil for local use. Today the nation is broke and instead of Mahama showing leadership by slashing their undeserved salaries he is asking the over-burdened poor ghanaian to pay for the cost of the economic blunders and mismanagement caused by his inept administration by removing the subsidy on fuel which has served as a safety net for the poor. Prices of goods and services will see dramatic increases because like everywhere else in the world an increase in fuel prices affects the prices of everything else. The water and electricity problems have worsened. If you're not already disappointed then gird up your loins for a rude awakening.

A great man becomes greater the longer he remains dead, because his progressive ideas remain in the hearts and minds of his people forever.
No Ghanaian/African politician showed greater love for his people than selfless President Kwame Nkrumah, that's why he is revered world-wide, while his enemies/traitors are mere foot notes in Ghanaian history, and invisible outside of Ghana.
History is a guide to future action, those who ignore it are doomed to repeating the same mistakes. Kwame Nkrumah has set the standards by which all other African presidents are measured.
All of the living Ghanaian presidents have already endorsed president Nkrumah's political programs, so, I'm asking the enemies of progress, which of your heroes are you willing to compare with the great one?
It's not enough for the enemies of progress to say that Nkrumah is dead, if they cannot present a comparison, dead or alive, please step forward and put up or forever SHUT UP.

Francis Eduku Nweanah religion is a human occupation, thus religion is a human creation. Emanating from the above man created God and not that God created man.
Throughout the history of human civilization man has due to the role that some people played in society immortalized them, to be specific since man is only immortalized in society thus each society, country and continent has the right to immortalize a person dead or alive that they want to copy.
It is also a fact that it is only the Abram religions that do not have a immortalized human being as their god. However a look at the history of religion since the days of Egypt reveals that they immortalized man, and not only Egypt, but any religion that played part in the development of human civilization.
In Greek and some African religious history we see mortals at war with the gods because according to those religions God is not perfect.
According to the science that study the behaviour of man - psychology, man can only be perfect in society, not out side society.
Your Christian God does not live in society, he does not fill hunger, taste, pain and since he is outside society can not know what is love, even if he is not only human imagination. Thus psychology has debunk the idea that a person can be immortal when he or she has not been a mortal before and has been able to excel during the both natural and social storms.
Hegel dialectics said God in his development created the world. Thus Hegel sees religion not as something static but dynamic an in constant motion. Thus Hegel seems to say that since the Christian god is not that dynamic it has lost account of what happens in society and that man is left to decide for himself.
The day of work of a scientist starts with his application of what the immortals in all aspects of human endeavour left for us to enrich. Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah is an immortal since he left a lot for us to enrich. The Karl Marx and Federich Engles unmasked capitalism as a socioeconomic system, though advance than slavery, but has freed the slave and chain him with wage-slavery. Vladimir Illich Lenin went further to state that capitalism did not only made the former slave a wage-slave but has gone further to create monopolies, exported capital and divided the world among the strong capitalist countries. He stated that the world during his time entered the period of monopoly capitalism. Lenin stated that that period is the time of the proletariat revolution.
Kwame Nkrumah was born eight years before the proletariat revolution, but became an adult during the period of national liberation. Kwame Nkrumah immortalized himself and if we are to be in ancient Greece or in societies that the deaf and dump Abraham religions does not rule when he wrote the Thesis "Neocolonialism The Highest State of Imperialism". In that thesis he stated that a neocolony is an independent country that is still socioeconomically controlled by the former imperial colonialist or any other. Neocolonialism he state is the usurpation of power both political and economic by the super powers without responsibility.
Kwame Nkrumah as an immortal did not get the vote of the people without responsibility like God who no one voted for but is forced on each believer hook, line and sinker from infancy with all threat of punishment.
When I arrived in Accra in 1965 at the age of 12 years of age, there was no unemployed in the compound house in which we lived. I read in the "Daily Graphic" newspaper today that Col. Emmanuel Kwesi Kotoka said on 24/2/1966 that Nkrumah did not equip the army, there were no uniforms, boots and weapons for them. That however is further from the truth. My brother in-law from 1964 to 1976 did his service in the military supply services. I witnessed how the military those days was supplied with its necessities those day, even better than today. In terms of uniform and boots a lot was imported by the CPP led by Kwame Nkrumah not only for he military but also for the Workers Brigade, Young Pioneers and some other voluntary organizations.
In history of human civilization we refer to selfless persons as immortals, hence Nkrumah was on because he was not greedy, and did not have a single private property when he was overthrown.
Nkrumah during his period introduced free quality education including adult literacy, health and water. His industrial and agricultural projects were envy of even India, Malaysia and some South East Asian countries.
His nuclear project was to keep us out of the persistent power cut off that we experience today.
In the agriculture sector he did not only empowered the Brigades only to produce food, but to distribute and process it.
"Criticism has plucked the imaginary flowers on the chain not in order that man shall continue to bear that chain without fantasy or consolation, but so that he shall throw off the chain and plug a living flower. The criticism of religion disillusions man, so that he will think, act, and fashion his reality like a man who has discarded his illusions and regained his senses, so that he will move around himself as his own Sun. Religion is only the illusory Sun which revolve around man as long as he does not revolve around himself", Karl Marx "Contribution to the Critique of Hegel's Philosophy of Right"
Mr. Francis Eduku Nweanah, Ghanaians are mortals and if we should evolve around another mortal it is only Immortal Kwame Nkrumah, who is still a mortal in his books, with the ability to feel mortal pain and at the same time provide a relief.
You are a God in your own field of human endeavour to give relief to pain, but as soon as you lost that ability you are no more an immortal.
The profane existence of error is compromised as soon as its heavenly oratio pro aris et focis ("speeech for the alters and hearths") has been refuted. Man, who has found only the reflection of himself in the fantastic reality of heaven, where he sought a superman, will no longer fess disposed to find the mere appearance of himself, the non-man ["Unmensch", where he seeks and must seek his true reality. The foundation of irreligious criticism is: Man makes religion, religion does not make man, Karl Marx.

For your information those of us who have studied the life and work of Nkrumah and have come to his philosophy recognize that he was as flawed an individual as the rest of us. However he was a visionary and laid down very solid foundations from which the likes of you benefit even if you don't know. Adulation is the wrong word to use, nor should anyone expect Nkrumah to suddenly be 'resurrected' from his grave to come and perform miracles. What we do need is for those of us living today, to carry on with that mantle of leadership, vision and the will to succeed in emancipating our people through hard work and good, honest leadership and good governance.
As the Osagyefo himself once said, "if we sit on our backsides and expect others to come and build our country and continent for us, we deceive ourselves" and "laziness shall never be tolerated". Surely, you cannot paint such a wrong picture as if people are simply waiting for those ideas to translate into a miracle. There were those who in the 1950s and 1960s wrongfully thought that Nkrumah would solve all our problems. That mistaken belief was of an era long gone. Do not tie today's followers with the same brush. Do not also be taken by the "foolish statement" by the CPP over the weekend that they the "CPP will restore hope" to Ghanaians. That statement is nonsensical as is irrelevant and only cheap propaganda taking advantage of current economic, water and energy challenges facing the country!

NOBODY is perfect and everybody's English can be improved - even Okoampa's. Even if you think there is nothing wrong with your work, someone else can see wrong things and tell you. The best thing is to ask someone else to read through your work, offer suggestions and corrections and point out small things you missed yourself. There is no shame in that. It is very normal in academia. You can also do the same for your friend. The result is ALWAYS ALWAYS a better work than your original.
