Kobina, you're not the first to urge fellow Ghanaians to lose weight and stay in shape. I must admit, however, that your piece is the most insulting that I have ever read regarding obesity among Ghanaians. Can you say these very disrespectful things to your parents? Or to your uncles, aunts, and grandparents? You are a good example of what we Ewes call a "dzimakpla".
I certainly agree with those who are calling on Francis Akoto to institute a measure of bowdlerization to keep this portal worth visiting, going forward. The fact that you have the capacity to put words together to form intelligible sentences does not mean that you should act like a spoiled brat without a modicum of regard for his elders.
If I were a psychologist assessing your demented rants in this piece, I would conclude that you were either high on cannabis or some other illicit substance. Grow up and learn to respect your elders.
The topic is a fine and needed one--but your approach is juvenile, disgusting, and dastardly.

Those in the city should learn from thier village folks. They eat healthy, barely any fat meats because they can't afford it.They don't sit on thier fat asses all day while using children as slaves like those in the city. they work hard but still don't get respect from the called city boys and girls. They don't use beer like drinking water. And most of them eat earlier. So city folks, at least learn something from those you guys call villagers.

What elders? Gone are the days when people advanced in age were considered the proud possessors of wisdom. It's no more the case. The bad examples of the elderly are corrupting the youth, our hope for the future. The youth of today no more believe the age old ghanaian axiom that every elder is always right.
According to some international polls Ghana is the most christian nation in the world. Really? You'd expect such a high rating would translate into high moral standards and ghana would equally be the paradise on earth .You'd think elusive Zion where "the people are of one heart and one mind, live in righteousness and there is no poor among them" has finally become a living reality in Ghana. You'd have a rude re-awakening should you decide to make the trip to have a first hand experience of a modern day Zion. Christianity is a way of life and if there's widespread decadence in the moral fibre of the society then who are the ghanaian christians fooling?
We respect elders who behave as elders and set good examples for the younger generations to follow. Elders deserve our respect because they've earned it.They're those who have learned wisdom through experience, acquired the art of self mastery and have a control over their emotions and body appetites. Hello? Respect for a 70 year old who's not any more different from a boisterous 17 year old kid? I don't think so.
Daniel Pyrce, this is Kobina Antobam's writing style and you can love it or hate it. Some ghanaians are hard of hearing and Kobina believes this is the way to get his message across. Jesus Christ, the master teacher sometimes picked tough words to address his recalcitrant listeners. Those who have ears will hear.

Our beer bottles are too fat or big (think big) by the time you gulp down two bottles the belly is already gone.
Daily exercise is not encouraged in our middle age. we see ladies carry extra weight around their neck and lower parts as beautiful and well taken care of.
The mind-set is totally wrong. i will commend you for your piece.

The writer has said in one feature article what it'd take some people decades to say. The fierce urgency of now will sometimes demand that certain truths are stated unambigiously leaving no room for confusion, misinterpretation and misconception. We can no longer treat the problem of obesity with kid gloves.
The abundance of (red)meat in the US in the 1800s caused many people to feed solely on meat. Years later health experts found out the ill effects and cautioned that meat should be eaten sparingly and encouraging rather the inclusion of more grains, cereals, nuts, vegetables and fruits in the daily dietary requirements. In Ghana eating more meat and drinking lots of beer is considered a luxury , the preserve of the rich and the "evidence of good living". It's unfortunate that as a nation we've failed to engage in vital research and adopt health policies that'd enhance the quality of life but more disturbing is our inability to avail ourselves of the reserch findings of other nations to improve the health of ghanaians.
There are decadent old cultural and societal norms and beliefs we're still holding on to that are doing us more harm than good and we need to review and revise them or abandon them altogether. Obesity is considered the premium and envied size of the wealthy whilst slimness is the stigma of the undernourished and under-fed as a result of poverty.Even a good number of ghanaians living in the US and Europe in spite of the vast health and nutrition information they are exposed to still prefer obesity to weight control because they can't shake off bad habits acquired several years ago.
Gyms are scarce in Ghana. I think we in Ghana should invest in things that promote healthy lifestyles like gyms, nutrition and wellness clubs whose mission is to change peoples' lives by providing the best nutrition and weight management education and products in the world, etc. than the prevailing over-reliance on activities that increase the mortality rate.
