The space and time here is never enough to handle very sensitive issues such as mining. Most Ghanains always talk about mining only when we see the gold and the oil coming out of the ground. The main issue is never the mining of the ore but the processes before you get to mining. We are are unable to solve simple waste management problems because we do not have money to finance waste segregation and 'best practice' management. How then do we get the money to undertake the very expensive exploratioin projects and feasibility studies that could end up without any gain. The risk is very high and make it difficult for us as country. Hence, the foreign companies raises the capital for the exploration and eventually gets the mining rights. The 10% ownership by Ghana in these companies are free carry interest without any liability. If we are able to cut out probably 10% of the corruption and ... debt payments, perhaps we could also finance some exploration projects and change the ownership structure of these companies. Just a few tip.

The other question is the required investment to operate the mines ourself - investments in, especially, technology, equipment, facilities, and personnel.
Perhaps, a watchdog local NGO (non-alligned) of knowledgeable citizens is required to hold the leaders to account for their decisions in these matters.

The question is why can’t Ghanaians manage mining on their own ? Why ask for foreign investors ? I guess after all the years since independence we still lack behind in education, vision and work ethic.

You don't need to lie when writing a good article. Ghana gets: Corporation tax-35%, Participating interest-10%or15%, and Royalties and social environmental responsibility-10%. Totalling 55% or 60%. This is true to the extractive industry as a whole. The government gets over £3 billion a year from minning ie, from Gold. We can do better by adding value to the gold Bars that we export [by refining], I agree with that

These capitalist agents of neocolonialism are bleeding us dry. They are vested interests who will not give up their booty without a fight. Witneess how Britain put ex-Pres Mills under severe pressure not to act on Vodafone.
By the way, with Jubilee oil we have 14.7% carried interest, and the oil companies have a tax holiday to recover their investments. Such generosity is detrimwental to our national interests. We have only 10% interest in the new contract with HEss corporation.

We must take control of our own resources and exploit them for the benefit of all our people.
The foreign dominatrion of all the major sectors of our economy must not be allowed to continue. Foreigners are only here to make a profit - they will not develop our country.
55 years after independence and with such significant investment in education, we have the skills and expertise to run our industries efficiently and effectively. Let us stiop relying on foreign direct investment. Let us bring our people back from foreign lands to man these industries, and employ our young men and women.
We need the political will so to do. We must act now, and stop the petty politicking!
