I think it is imperative the NDC politicians from the North warn and caution their supporters against these acts of vandalism and protests of this nature.
I was flabbergasted to read that the protest was also motivated by Haruna not getting the Oil Ministry! What are they thinking? With so many ministerial posts already being dolled out to people from the North, GETFUND scholarships disproportionately allocated to Northern students, some of them just wives of party honchos who dropped out of schooling years ago, what else do they want? This sense of entitlement and the rest of Ghana owes them a living mentality must be curbed immediately, as even some of us who have empathy for our countrymen from the North are beginning to tire of some of their antics. We all are sufferheads!
With free education assured there since 1952, one would have thought literacy rate there would be in the region of at least 90% by now, far above the rest of Ghana. But the area still wallows in a mass of illiterates and school drop outs just like the rest of Ghana. Has the educated Northern elite done something to conscientise, mobilise and shepherd their people to embrace education at least? Why do they think these class of selfish lot will do to change that? Oh! Ayariga got lots of tractors for them, eh? During JJ's time in the mid-'80s, Adjei Marfo was forced to resign as Min. of Agric for allocating a single tractor to someone much deserving on the list but reportedly a new applicant!
And when people get public posts, Ministerial appts, etc. they are not supposed to use it to build up their hometowns and regions only. If that were the case, the VR would have been the most developed region in the country, if the reasoning of pundits who like to publish those flawed lists of "Ewe" appt holders is reasonable.

Andy, you have surely gone overboard with your comments....you did make a lot of sense when you trenchantly asserted that northern politicians must warn their supporters to desist from violent protests..that is very true and what happened in Tamale purportedly by Harunna's supporters must be condemned in no uncertain terms. However, for you to conflate this despicable act with issues that could be discussed some other time points to your jaundiced view of the northern regions....for starters, free education has ended. And when it was operational, southerners who grew up in the north and went to school there did not pay school fees....I can attest to that because I had many southerner classmates in the 1970s. The free education scheme was a public policy initiative by the British to narrow the gap between the north and the south...has this been achieved? No. Because southerners still dominate the economy. Northern elite? What is that? This is a figment of your poisoned imagination. Nothing like that exists and is only the creation of southern naysayers...
Like you, northerners are also tired of southerners who have enjoyed the largess of the nation for so long but keep moaning and whinning about free education in the north. Get over it and get used to the fact that northerners have come into their own and there is absolutely nothing you nor the rest of the south can do about it....

Mojingles,
I am writing this just for the records.
I don't play the ostrich and there are no sacred cows in my stable. I mentioned those issues in order to bring into sharp focus the rationale behind the protests and the reality on the ground.
If you referred to my disgust at the non-performance of the Northern elite, just as their southern counterparts, in promoting the advancement of their people as expression of my "jaundiced view" of the northern regions, then you simply don't know whom I am and what I stand for! I don't only support the free education in the North but the extension of same to the whole of Ghana but NOT in the manner being put fwd by Nana Akufo-Addo.
By now, my northern blood relations through my great grand father would have numbered over a 1000+! Hmm! He reportedly married 32 northern women when he settled in the Daboya area in exile at the turn of the C20th! He was made local chief over his flock.
And two of my 3 junior siblings were born at Damongo in the late 1950s, no doubt in the same Govt Hospital and, perhaps, by the same midwife, who delivered President Mahama, whose brother Ibrahim I share filial relations with too! Northern Ghana is therefore something some of grew up in and we are surrounded with.
Anyway, it is not my view that is jaundiced; rather the conditions and state of things there.
BTW, it was the new CPP Administration that initiated the free education policy, not the British. It has served its purpose and certainly needs reforming, e.g., in terms of feeding boarders.
I am glad you've observed northerners have come into their own. That's exactly the reason why some of us are saying certain things must change. for instance, poor southerners cannot be expected to continue subsidising in any shape or manner the education of the super rich northern elite or anyone who goes to school in the North so long as same conditions don't apply in the south!
