Somebody tell that story to Logba Tota Kosi Edem (if he is still alive). Here was a stupid man who served in Ghana's Parliament for 12 years and turned around to send several stupid letters to the British and German Embassies demanding seperation of Volta from Ghana. His stupid reason, the plebiscite of 1957 and was rigged by the British government and therefore the union between Ghana and the then TVT is illegal. How senseless and backward can a man be. Voltarians should stand up and tell Kosi Edem, whose uncle was a UP leader, that they are moving forward.

If you are talking about the honourable Kosi KEDEM, then you must make this clear.
If indeed he "sent out letters to foreign bodies" he must have been right.
Volta Region as it is today, is carved out from the Trans-Volta Togoland. Trans-Volta stretched from the areas above Anloland all the way to Bawku. Kpandai, Bimbilla, Yendi were all part of Trans-Volta.
The Plesbiscite of 1956 indeed, "YES" won. the YES winning implied that "OUR FATHERS ACCEPTED TO BECOME ONE WITH GOLD COAST, which was going to be independent within short while. The Plebiscite was in May 1956.
Since this Trans-Volta was a British Protectorate, Her Majesty the Queen WROTE to the United Nations on Britain's stand, to leave this piece of land and "depart" from that area.
OUR FATHERS PETITIONED THE UN, AND THE FINAL AGREEMENT WAS THAT "TRANS-VOLTA WOULD TRY A UNION WITH GOLD COAST FOR 50 YEARS". That was in December 1956, hence in 2006, the UN actually ought to renew, revisit or take another look at thatUN AGREEMENT'S 50YRS VALIDITY.
Please leave Mr Kosi Kedem alone, if he is the one you are talking about.
The call was so clear, that I fully supported it.
Long Live Ghana.

If there was to be a review after 50 years, then there should have been a widespread wish for that in 2006 and the citizens of the erstwhile TVT (who are all Ghanaians today), would have been asked to vote in another plebiscite whether to continue with the amalgamation with Ghana.
I am not aware of any widespread wish for such a move. There was only a cry from a tiny group calling for such a review. Many citizens of the erstwhile TVT don't even know of such an agreement. They don't even want to separate from Ghana as it is now. You can just guess how such a new plebiscite will end.
Moreover, there may be huge legal issues. As an independent entity, Ghana will not like to be "ordered" about by the UN when it comes to its "territorial integrity" especially when there is no general agitation for such. The UN Trusteeship council which supervised the 1956 Plebiscite has even ceased to exist because its work had ended long ago.
Under such circumstances, it will be wise to let sleeping dogs lie where they are snoring, even if the '56 Plebiscite "may" have truly been rigged or not. (Ghanaians started rigging elections from ages ago...)
Anyway, the erstwhile TVT didn't stretch from "areas above Anloland". It stretched from long away from Anloland. The Tongus were not part. Even the Pekis and Awudomes and some surrounding areas were not part. Those areas are are long from Anloland. The colonialists imposed borders with their eyes closed.

Hello Sani
I admire your clean language.
Where could the "widespread wish for that in 2006" start from?
When I heard of this news, I traveled to Ghana, to my home village, then to Ho to require reference material. The gallant and noble men who raised this issue had a good cause. They also perhaps wanted "to leave sleepy dogs lie" but our annexation to the 3 Colonies was not done by the British. We (our fathers) signed a TREATY WITH WITH THE U.N THAT THEY WOULD TRY A 'UNION' WITH THE GOLD COAST FOR 50YEARS. That remains a FACT!!
That is where the issue lies.
Have you not read over a hundred times on Ghanaweb/SIL that Ewes "can go back to Togo etc etc?
The Anlos are more Ghanaian than the Asantes. Do you know this?
Anlo was brought under British rule in 1876 or so; whereas Asante was brought under British rule when Prempeh was captured. That was 1901/02.
This is the reason why Anloland (and Tongu areas as you say) were part of Gold Coast before TVT was added by the UN, at the request of Her Majesty the Queen, in 1956 December. Gold Coast Colony, Ashanti, Northern Territories plus TVT became GHANA on March 6, 1957.
Indeed Kwame Nkrumah was so smart that he "dismembered" the TVT just as on Independence, cutting off the uppermost side to become Upper Region; the Yendi /Bimbilla areas to be NORTHERN Region; the Akan areas along Volta Basin to become EASTERN Region and then added the Ewes plus Anlos plus the rest up to Krachi to be VOLTA REGION.
This was the main reason why Osagyefo thought it wise to recommend the MEDIUM MORTAR Regiment at Ho, to thwart any secessionist moves; and this was the main reason why Busia took Akosombokanea 'over' the Volta Region to sell to Togo, without any line dropped in the Volta Region.
Yes, we may leave sleepy dogs lie, but history must not be changed.
Long live Ghana

I was in Gh last year and visited Ho. I saw the efforts that are been made by Togbe Afede. Ho has really changed and transformed. Thanks to the NPP, NDC, and the visionary leadership of the current Ho king. I realized that the Volta has a lot of opportunities with the availability of the Volta Lake and the sea. If the Volta is to develop the sons and daughters should stop putting all they had in Accra and else where and look towards home.
Voltarians have been guilty of fleeing the region for so long under the disguise that there arent any opportunities there. Who do they expect to come and develop the place for them? Accra is too choked as at now that no one should want to over concentrate on.
After the violent attack on Ewes in the Central region I will advice all Ewes living elswhere in Ghana and making it their home to look towards the region now.
How long can you continue to live as foreigners in other ppls region when yours is there for free? Business opportunities are springing up in places like Ho, Kpando, Hohoe, Anloga etc.
After all the Kwawus and Asantes developed their own regions. An Asante will never build anywhere until he has done so in Kumasi. If all Ewes in Ghana were to start investing in the region instead of Accra and elswhere and look towards home the Volata can easily be one of the success stories in Ghana.
Volta children the time is now. As opposed to what some of the Ewe haters and clueless Ghanaians say that the region is non friendly to non Ewes I saw many ppl speaking TWI when I was in Ho just last year. Many of our Akan brothers and sisters have seen the business opportunities in the region and are quickly capitalizing on it. It is a good sign and Ewes need to follow suit.
God bless those who help themselves.

First of all, I'd like to say thanks to the writer for taking the trouble to focus attention on his work as Board Member of the VORDA. I hardly knew what they are up to and what they have achieved so far, despite belonging to major forums based on the VR.
Anyway, the word is "morkporkpor", which can be translated as "providing opportunity for progress or development"....
Sogakope is known for kente (kete) weaving. Rather Agbozume and Kpetoe are.
As for the debilitating apathy shown by people from the VR towards their home towns and region, it is replicated by all the elite of the other regions as well. Most of the Ga elite live in Accra but can someone point out what pivotal roles they have been playing in enhancing the living conditions of the ordinarily Ga people? Or what the Fante elite are doing? The Asante elite? The Dagbon, Mamprussi, etc, elite? Hmm! One can say the Gonja elite Mahama secured so many scholarships for his fellow northerners to study medicine in Cuba! Phew! What else?

In the last line, the writer gets "morkporkpor" correctly spelt. That one the webmaster didn't spoil it since he didn't read so far.
Even if the name "Appiah-Danquah Kufuor" doesn't sound Ewe, he will not be a worthy board member of VORDA if he didn't know it is "morkporkpor" which is, perhaps, better translated as "hopefulness".

I don't think you therefore have to blame the webmaster for the errors, as it is obvious the writer made them.
"Hopefulness" cannot be the translation of the word. It describes enabling or creating an opportunity or chance for someone or people to realise an objective. Same as the cliche of our lying politicians who are always promising us "enabling environment" for the private sector to be the engine of growth. "Morkporkpor" is therefore the nearest English equivalent.

Kola, most regions in Ghana, especially those hugely populated by Akans have seen some meagre development not because any Government in Ghana (with the exception of Kwame Nkrumah for development projects in Greater Accra), but rather individual ingenuity and their entrepreneurial spirit have helped to sustain those regions. But what do we see with the large Volta intelligentsia who prefer to live in Accra and take up only government jobs? I know of highly well educated Voltarians who are scared to build homes in the Volta region for fear that they will die from witchcraft. Kola, it's even possible that you may be one of them who live comfortably in the UK because you are scared to build a home for yourself and your extended family in the Volta Region. All successive governments in Ghana have done a poor job of effectively developing the country as a whole. There's poverty in every region of Ghana. Hoowever, good spirited Ghanaians from certain regions have done more than enough to make their individual regions achieve some level of development. It is baseless for you to surmize that the Volta Region has poverty because certain governments abandoned it. That's far from the truth. I understand that ex-President Kuffour's governmen, for instance, did a lot of road and other development than it's predecessor did in several years in govrernment. I call on all my educated and rich friends from the Volta region to join the fight to prevent poverty in the Volta region as well as all of Ghana instead of only wanting to secure posh government jobs and collecting bribes and kick-backs in the process.

Until the educated Ewes change their attitude towards their homeland, it will be difficult to see any real sustainable development in your beloved Trokosi home my dear brother. Anyway, does the elite from the other regions behave any differently from those of the deprived VR? Are most of the northern Ghana elite not based in the south, and a few in the big towns like Tamale? In any case, they became what they are by being where they are and derive their support and well-being from that. What we shld start urging them to do is put something back where they come from. Many have been trying to do that and meeting major obstacles, esp. when you are not there to organise and supervise things.
