You will be guilty of stereotyping--ascribing the tendency of a few of the group members to the whole group. It will be, inductively and deductively, an unacceptably criminal argument to make! My brother, most Gas are law-abiding. Don't believe otherwise. Even if your claim is true, is that enough reason for us to become pedestrian in the high-stakes of political brinkmanship in Ghana?

Real Mccoy, you are representative of the intellectual equivalent of what a novelist once called: "a tree stump in the midst of a fast flowing river." To you Dr. Blankson is a fraud because he does not come from the proper ruling house. I am aware of that, but maybe you would do yourself a world of good if you would question how certain families came to be royal families, and then further ask whether there is still enough justification, in our current dispensation, for some people to become royals by accident of birth, and all others, even if more talented, to still remain plebeian.
Real Mccoy, look at what is happening on our national scene: today we have a northerner as our president. If you care to know, there was a time when the majority of the northerners in Accra, at least, Odododiodioo, were porters, 'mei koleba,' and "mei luwa!" I hope you're old enough to remember these terms. Today, things are different; these same northerners are more educated, and, therefore, are running the business of the country. Left to you, they will continue to be as they had always been! In fact, that is the argument you are making for calling Dr. Blankson a fraud, simply because he does not hail from one of the "Mantsemei Ashiai" ie Royal Houses.
Let me give you a little schooling about some facts of Ga life. Among Gas, a family became the ruling house if that family founded the town. Other families were co-opted into royalty if one of them rendered stellar services to the town or the group. This is how Nikoi Nalai came to be the progenitor of one of the ruling houses of Asere. He rendered military service, and was rewarded with a ruling clan. Today, leaders emerge because of their talents and other attributes, not because of the accidents of birth. In fact, life itself does not operate that way. That is why it is possible for a rich person's child to become poor, and a poor person's child to become rich; a professor's child to become a dimwit, and an illiterate's child to become a genius. As far as you are concerned, the old order must not change, and we must continue to install intellect-deficient people as our leaders just because they come from the proper "Wei." I am sorry, that is 13th century thinking; this is the modern world!
Anyway, I digress.
The object of my pieces is to compel Gas to embark on a soul-searching mission, so we can jettison the dead-weights of small-mindedness; lack of drive and will-power; easy satiation; unnecessary fealty to moribund traditions; and that stupid tendency to always play on the fringes! Please do not reduce this dire exigency to a case of NPP v. NDC theatrics. I care less which party is in power. Our house is on fire, and we don't have the luxury of choosing who to bring us the needed bucket of water to douse the flame!
If you are Ga, and are tired of always playing second-fiddle in your own backyard, this is a call to rise up and demand equity.

Look, if there is the need to change the rules of inheritance, which I definitely agree is the case, it must be properly discussed by all and the appropriate traditional institutions agree to who and who is qualified to contest, so that everyone is given a fair chance. It shouldn't be the case of people not qualified under the existing rules seizing the throne with the assistance of their friends in control of the state coercive apparatus at the moment. See what has been happening in Dagbon when the pro-N/PP forces got the leeway in 1969 and then in early 2000s to massacre their opponents. That's lawlessness, disorder, etc. and must be frown upon, even if you support women becoming Ga Mantse!

We were all in Ghana when the three Northern regions came together and demanded the Presidential or Vice Presidential slot in exchange for their 1.7 million or so voters and got their way. They were immediately rewarded with the appointment of President Hilla Liman, followed by the appointments of Vice President Alliu Mahama and Vice President John Mahama who metamorphosed into Caretaker President on the death of President Mills. We were again around when Caretaker President John Mahama declared that the North was fed up with being confined to the Vice Presidency, and called on Northerners to vote for their fellow Northerner in the 2012 elections. The North responded and, with the help of Gas, got Caretaker President Mahamah ellected as substantive President. Today, the North tops the list of elected Presidents and Vice Presidents, having produced President Liman, President John Mahama and Caretaker President Mahama as well as Vice President Alliu Mahama and Vice President John Mahama. As additional bonus, the North has had uncountable numbers of Ministerial appointments. Second on the list is the Central Region with one President (Mills) and four Vice Presidents (de Graft Johnson, Ackaah, Mills and Amissah Arthur. The Volta Region has produced only one President (Rawlings) and no Vice President; followed by the Western Region with only one President (Nkrumah) and no Vice President; Ashanti Region with only one President (Kufuor) and no Vice President; Brong Ahafo Region with only one Prime Minister and no Vice President; and the Eastern Region with only one Ceremonial President (Edward Akufo Addo) and no Vice President. Greater Accra, the last on the list, and with early 3 million voters, has produced no President and no Vice President. It has also had the least of Ministerial appointments. Gas have been too busy helping Northerners and Voltarians to rule over them. The blame is theirs to carry. If the North, with a mere 1.7 million voters, can demand and get a lion's share of Executive positions in the country, what prevents Greater Accra, with close to 3 million votes, from doing the same ??? Sure, sure, things are pretty precarious for many at Chorkor, where I used to go to pull net in the late '70s in order to get free fish during the herring season. But same is the case for communities in fishing settlements along the coast, or on the Volta River.
And have you guys been to the cocoa growing areas before? Oh! my! Oh! my! Even the garages the Ga elite, just like the rest of the Ghanaian vampire elite, are better than the swish homes they sleep in!
I think this is the case of the story of the Poor Church Mouse. Not all Gas have it bad, since Gas form a large section of the Ghanaian middle class and elite, proportionately or significantly more than any other ethnic group in the country. This has been statistically proven.

There are Polyclinics in EVERY MAJOR Ga suburb, apart from the new ones that have sprung up- Labadi, OSu, Mamprobi, Maamobi/Kotobaabi ( someone tell me if I have left anything out) How many do you have in your village and its surrounds? You will need Binoculars to look for it because you wouldn't find any; certainly not in the area that i come from. If the Missionaries had not built one in Akwatia, I don't know where people could have accessed healthcare.
Yet inspite of all that, Accra people complain.
They say in the West, that those who shout loudest get heard the quickest so the Gas are using it to their advantage.
They will be hearing us too soon.Unless people stop yabbing unnecessarily.
Past Governments have misplaced priorities and those in charge who could have added their voice and made a change did not. SO it will have tp be revisited DOn't worry

Many married Ga couple needs to learn how to live under the same roof and care for their children. "Charity is said to begin at home". Let Gas start learning how to stick together as man and wife, educate their children and stop street words at homes; and their generation is in sight. I could see how burning the writers are and I can agree with them but education will change the issue at hand. You are lucky to have all types of learning institutions in Accra; all government headquarters/commerce in Accra not to mention the headquarters of cocoa marketing board in Accra when many Gas have not even seen a cocoa tree before. The big names you mentioned perhaps enjoyed the free education of Nkrumahs' programs. Let every citizen see himself/herself as a Ghanaian first and the rest will follow. Thanks for your reminder and please start a community education program for the youths. They can change!

The sad aspect about the article is that instead of altruisically advancing the common plight and predicament of the gas nation he has shamelessly and banally appropriated the situation to advance is selfish and narrow political end of advancing and projecting the cause of the NPP party and even though I am not qualified to make such a pronouncement such attitude as portrayed by the writer of the article is the cause of the sad commentary and challenges of the Ga nation. Don't just be selfish, bitter and vain learn to mobilize and apolitically fight for the common good of the generality of the Ga nation; for that is the way forward. Thank you

I was once a dyed-in-the-wool advocate of national integration, and to a large extent, I still am; however, when you constantly see your own group being reduced and relegated to pedestrian status, you have no choice than to re-assess the situation, and if need be, re-calibrate, and re-focus your energies in the proper direction. And that is exactly what I am calling on Gas to do from now on. I am not blaming anybody for our predicament; our dilemma is self-inflicted. Others have only exploited our languidness and lack of motivation to profit at our expense.
Let me repeat: I don't foresee Mahama treating us any better than all his predecessors did. Why should he compensate us if he could have us for free? Why should Mahama take us serious if all it takes to satisfy us is a couple of "T" shirts and empty slogans? Why should Mahama do something substantive and substantial for us if his hollow platitudes are all it takes to get us to swoon and fawn over him like the cheap and amnesic expedients we've become?

Real Mccoy, look at what is happening on our national scene: today we have a northerner as our president. If you care to know, there was a time when the majority of the northerners in Accra, at least, Odododiodioo, were porters, 'mei koleba,' and "mei luwa!" I hope you're old enough to remember these terms. Today, things are different; these same northerners are more educated, and, therefore, are running the business of the country. Left to you, they will continue to be as they had always been! In fact, that is the argument you are making for calling Dr. Blankson a fraud, simply because he does not hail from one of the "Mantsemei Ashiai" ie Royal Houses.
Let me give you a little schooling about some facts of Ga life. Among Gas, a family became the ruling house if that family founded the town. Other families were co-opted into royalty if one of them rendered stellar services to the town or the group. This is how Nikoi Nalai came to be the progenitor of one of the ruling houses of Asere. He rendered military service, and was rewarded with a ruling clan. Today, leaders emerge because of their talents and other attributes, not because of the accidents of birth. In fact, life itself does not operate that way. That is why it is possible for a rich person's child to become poor, and a poor person's child to become rich; a professor's child to become a dimwit, and an illiterate's child to become a genius. As far as you are concerned, the old order must not change, and we must continue to install intellect-deficient people as our leaders just because they come from the proper "Wei." I am sorry, that is 13th century thinking; this is the modern world!
Anyway, I digress.
The object of my pieces is to compel Gas to embark on a soul-searching mission, so we can jettison the dead-weights of small-mindedness; lack of drive and will-power; easy satiation; unnecessary fealty to moribund traditions; and that stupid tendency to always play on the fringes! Please do not reduce this dire exigency to a case of NPP v. NDC theatrics. I care less which party is in power. Our house is on fire, and we don't have the luxury of choosing who to bring us the needed bucket of water to douse the flame!
If you are Ga, and are tired of always playing second-fiddle in your own backyard, this is a call to rise up and demand equity.
By the way, below is the ministerial list Mahama sent to parliament. Can you show me a real Ga on that list?
