A very good read, except this part which is problematic: was John not a Ghanaian and what would have been wrong with a Ghanaian accent?
*For John would never be caught pronouncing English words the
'usual'Ghanaian way – say, ‘EXpress’ (with the accent on the first
syllable) for exPRESS, (accent on the second syllable); or dediCATE (accent
on the last syllable) for DEDIcate’ (accents on the first and second
syllables). *

Most of the "secondary schools" had full-time Teachers teaching "Oral English"!
John "taught" himself, go figure!

Why dumb?
In "post colo-days", that was a "qualification requirement": speak the "queen's english".

Like John Hammond, of whom you write with such affection and respect, you also are a national treasure!

My father told me about John Hammonds exploits on radio. I never got to hear him though. He definitely made his mark. May his soul rest in peace.

As for more contributions from his end -- as some are requesting -- please kindly direct the request to the appropriate quarters -- that is, the Editors of Ghanaweb. Huffingtonpost and similar websites employ distiniguished Columnists to write regularly for them. There's no reason why Ghanaweb, in its full maturity, cannot now offer contracts to people like my Dad, to educate, inform and entertain readers of the website. So, over to the Editors! Please write to them in your millions!
