Mr. Twumasi, you gloss over very important facts, Nkrumah was indeed visionary but also became a monster. The reason for Ghana's failure since independence is not because Nkrumah was overthrown or because we have had coup d'etats, Thailand has had more but continues to thrive. We hate to hear the truth and are so insular we reject everything which is external except goods because we cannot make anything. The reason why we do not progress in the main is because we are not capable of hard work. Yes we can pass examinations in our bogus universities and even do well in good institutions overseas but that is about it. We do not know what is hard work and we want Governments to provide everything for us. How is it that after 55 years of sovereignty we still cannot feed ourselves, we have open drains, our first class educational institutions are a shadow of of what they were. Mathematics and physical sciences are hardly studied because every student wants the easy way out. We cannot manage anything and yet that is what is studied in the so called universities. We rule by rhetoric, we can certainly talk but cannot do. There is no rule of law and we all know it, everybody knows the police are corrupt, the courts do not function properly with their interminable postponements etc. etc. Just look around the continent, it is almost the same every where. The plundering colonial governor, Lugard, said the black man will not be able to rule himself for the foreseeable future. We are proving him right but it need not be so, there are solutions, bitter medicines but are we prepared to take the medicines. It seems not as we cannot analyse the problem and therefore cannot take the medicine. We need an intelligent debate about why we cannot make progress.

Yes, this is a noble idea. May I suggest that for greater impact on the populace, it be featured as a regular radio and TV program and dramatized in plays depicting lessons to be learnt from our past, similar to the Osofo Dadzie series. More grease to your elbow!
We also Ghana traditional and political history books to be written and taught in schools.

Historical analysis is one of the cardinal ways to ensure posterity but it is at the botton of all the cardinal ways if you arrange them in importance. The writer devoted more time that was superflous to talk about history without pinpointing the necessary measures that must be taken by the youth to ensure prosperity. He talked much more on coup detals which not even a baby born today won't know that coup detal is not the right step of ensuring peace. As the writer failed to bring out contemporary ideas for the youth to depend on for prosperity but just interested in history, I have no option than also to talk about history.
He condemned the first coup detal which led to overthrow of Nkrumah, but I can say it was the most intelligent overthrow ever done in the hisdtory of the country. Nkrumah never allowed any election to be held since he became the president. And I think if he had allowed he wouldn't have been overthrown by guns. Besides that in the history of the country he was the only president without a vice president. So people saw him as greedy and use guns to remove him.
Talking about less development in the country, the main reason is not about overthrowing of NKrumah but it is our inability to process our natural reasources before exporting them. We can add some values to our gold and diamond before exporting. And by so doing jobs are created for some Ghanaians. The timber we export, we can use them to make plywoods, tables, chairs etc before exporting them. Even the recently disscovery of oil, we can't refine it here in the country before exporting. What a funny thing.

The Ghana traditional and political history book/s should give in-depth coverage of pre-independence struggle, educational backgrounds of the leaders, post-independence rule and the trappings of any foreign government involvement in the coup de tats so that in future, our own citizens don't lend themselves to the whims and caprices of foreigners to our detriment.

The first coup in Ghana has hamperd the development of the country. Those elites who crtisized the clonisation of the British and advocated for self rule are worse than the British. They have collaborated with the enemy of the country to overthrowned the ever and best son of both Africa and Ghana. Simply because he has refused them to loot the coffers of the country.
The last coup was staged to free Ghana from the claws of the sons of the people who masterminded the first coup. Because they have the DNA of their forefathers or fathers they have resorted in to even worst form of governing than their forefathers or fathers. They only took care of thier families and cronies, while the rest of the population are destituded, emaciated and eventually extinguishing. So, sometihng has to happen. The last coup is staged to correct the first coup or the last coup was an answer to the first coup.

Open mindedness is very essential in problem identification. At the end of a story, you'll find out it's been told; At the end of the Rainbow you'll find a Pot of Gold. It would be Totaliterian to outrightly justify or condemn a Government or Coup detate without the SCALE-BALANCE. Let's Patiently go STEP by STEP to find Ghana's POT of GOLD.

Those of us who are old enough to know the political atmosphere in Ghana prior to 1996 coup will agree that Nkrumah was a tyrant. By February 24th, 1966 ordinary citizens could not mention Nkrumah's name without prefixing it with Osagyefo or similar self-glorifying titles, otherwise, they would be picked up by the Boys Brigade and hauled to Nsawam Maximum Prison. School children were forced to become "Young Pioneers" and sing accolades like "Nkrumah Never Dies", "Show Boy", etc. If Nkrumah had not been over-thrown, most of Ghana's brilliant minds would have fled the country or been killed or imprisoned. At Independence, Ghana was the third richest among the British Commonwealth countries, behind Britain and Canada. Ghana's per capita income was higher than that of South Korea. By 1966, Ghana was at the brink of bankruptcy.
The history of Ghana will eventually exonerate the hero Nkrumah and reveal the villians. It has already started.
