Thanks for your write up. It reminds me of our time in school in Ghana. I enjoyed 'our day' very well. During the 70's and 80's especially in my school in Asante Bekwai, 'our day' was simply bring and share with friends. I remember very well most cases l could not send anything to school so the girls in the class would always bring more food and they shared with us. There was no pressure on anyone to give a gift to a teacher. It was a day for the children. Hence, the name 'our day'. A day for the children to celebrate and enjoy themselves with the little they can bring to school and share. Some of us were lucky to have friends who would always bring extra to share with us. I did not have the means to bring anything most of the time.
It was a lovely day and l think our children can enjoy it if the children become the centre of 'Our Day' instead of the teachers.
A parent can decide to give a gift to a teacher but that should not be part of the 'Our Day' celebration. It should be a special arrangement between the parent and the teacher. School heads should ensure that 'our day' focus is on the children.

Let 'our day' be as the name suggests, a day for the children not teachers.
