For the unitiated, these are the series of vicious ,vile and despicable attacks that the ancestors of useless Pres Kufuor, Akufo Addo etc heaped on our much loved Nkrumah for wining general elections. They were the same election rejects who branded him a dictator from day one.. Today, their descendants I are no different .Their creed is : personal enrichment,arrogance,sophism and contempt for tge ordinary are Ghanaian. Nkrumah, was dedicated,patriotic and selfless. A rare conviction politician.
Between 1954 and 1965, the National Liberation Movement (NLM) and subsequent United Party (UP) opposition engaged in a violent, prolonged campaign of shootings and bombings against Kwame Nkrumah and his Convention People's Party (CPP) government. This campaign ultimately precipitated the 1958 Preventive Detention Act and the establishment of a one-party state.
The NLM Insurgency (1954–1957)1954–1955 (Ashanti Violence): Following its formation in September 1954 , the NLM—backed by Asante traditional leaders and former CPP dissidents —waged an escalating campaign of intimidation in the Ashanti region. Armed NLM militants (known as "Action Groupers") attacked CPP members, destroyed property, and murdered key CPP figures, including a relative of CPP leader Krobo Edusei .
November 10, 1955: A bomb attack was carried out on Nkrumah’s private residence in Accra, an act officially attributed to NLM supporters .December 1956: A prominent CPP minister's wife and sister were the targets of an NLM bomb blast, killing the sister and destroying the house .1957: Following independence, the NLM and allied regional factions continued plotting, prompting Nkrumah to ban ethnically and religiously based political parties via the Avoidance of Discrimination Act, merging them into the United Party (UP) .
Escalation and Assassination Plots (1958–1962)December 1958: Senior UP opposition officials, including Modesto Apaloo, Reginald Reynolds Amponsah, and J.B. Danquah , conspired with an army commandant to orchestrate a Burmese-style overthrow and the assassination of Nkrumah .
August 1, 1962 (The Kulungugu Bombing): While Nkrumah was greeting schoolchildren in Kulungugu (Upper Region), an assassination attempt was made on his life using a thrown bomb. While he survived , four people were killed and over 50 others were injured .September 10, 1962: A bomb exploded outside Nkrumah's residence, killing three children and wounding many others .September 18–21, 1962: During a torchlight birthday procession organized for the President in Accra, bombs were thrown into the marching crowds . The attack targeted a public rally at the West End Arena and primarily struck the Young Pioneers (children and teenagers), killing three people and injuring approximately 120 others.
Final Assassination Attempts (1963–1965)January 8, 1963: Another bomb detonated in a crowd of supporters cheering Nkrumah as he drove through Accra after a political rally .March 15, 1963: Bombs were smuggled and detonated directly inside Parliament as part of a continued destabilization effort.January 2, 1964: A police officer stationed at the Flagstaff House fired four shots directly at the President, missing Nkrumah but killing his Chief Security Officer, Superintendent Salifu Dagart
