It does not really matter who is the sitting president, the framers of the constitution wanted to avoid entrenchment. We may pretend to have power change hands; what if it is done within the same political party- where a "care-taker president" is pushed in there? This happened to Putin`s Russia.
President John Dramani Mahama should resist this temptation; it is a trap to mar the beautiful legacy he is building.

Unless there is a coup I don't see how a "caretaker president" continue to remain in power. Eg. In US if the president and vise are no longer here the speaker of the house becomes president. A new election will be held at the end of the election cycle to retain the speakers position as president or elect a new president.

As usual, people will chime in with shallow pronouncements without carefully considering the writer’s objective. First, Ghanaians are not foolish enough to elect someone to office for more than two terms if that person has performed poorly. The recent election is a case in point.
Considering the two-term limit, Nana Akufo-Addo might attempt to run for a non-consecutive term in the future, but he would have to deceive or perhaps scam all Ghanaians to do so. However, what if a president served the consecutive term limit, performed exceptionally, and remained young and fit? Could another term in the future, like in the unique case of John Mahama, be hugely beneficial to the country? In this example, if Mahama's performance fell below expectations, he wouldn't stand a chance.
These are the questions we should be asking, rather than engaging in brainless or pointless arguments.

Mr president, focus on your goals and complete them in your given term. But, avoid this huge temptation, your legacy, and the peace of Ghana.
