During Nkrumah's time the word unemployment did not exist. The three universities could feed the market. There were polytechnics and technical schools feeding the industries. Where there was shortage of skills, competent people were sent abroad and they returned to Ghana after their studies. After the coup, a lot of students had their scholarships cut off by the traitors and they stayed overseas.
All the gold mines were set up by the government. The State Gold Mining Company consisted of the mines at Tarkwa, Prestea, Dunkwaw and Konongo. Only Ashanti Goldfields Corp at Obuasi belonged to General Spears, a British national.
The population was about seven million and proper family methods could have been adopted to curb population explosion. The lack of proper planning led to establishment of liberal arts universities, the easiest way out. More technological universities could have been established. Someone made a comparison between China and USA leaders. He said all the Chinese leaders for the past forty years have been engineers including President Xi Jinping while the American leaders have been lawyers and Ghana produced over eight hundred lawyers recently.
Neocolonialism is to blame because we don't have the resources to develop. We have given our oil, gold, manganese to neocolonialist and are getting only ten percent royalties. Observe what's going on in the Sahel states. They have taken absolute control of their minerals and are using it for their development. Nkrumah's statue is in Bamako so they know what they are doing.
Ghana government must take a radical approach and establish industrial parks without waiting for so called investors.
