Much as one accepts that valid points are made here, one has to look at this in context.
There are more polluting activities going on unchecked under our very noses.
I will raise my head above the parapet and cite a few which needs the attention of the writer that a once a year event with almost a negligible carbon footprint.
1. One cargo ship bringing all those imports into our dear country, products that can easily be sourced locally, causes over a hundred times the pollution the one night bonfire woukd have caused.
2. The many public transport vehicles, ie the tro tros, okadas, buses, the government V8s and V12s, plying our roads and highways at a snails pace because of the traffic and bad roads, without evidence of road worthiness and emissions controls.
3. The heavy machinery pillaging our countryside unchecked in the name of galamsay, spewing out diesel exhaust fumes
I could go on but these will suffice for now.
Our priorities to address environmental impact issues should be appropriately directed and channelled.
There are more urgent issues to tackle.
A fixation with a once a year bonfire using foraged wood and lasting a couple of hours, seriously sails close to sour grapes.
I will not make that judgement, I wish I was more of an environmental warrior, but in our neck of the woods, the will to survive at all costs, and the abject lack of discipline in most of our actions and our activities makes environmental issues a non starter.
Our daily activities will have to grind to halt to have any impact on our environmental crusade.
