WHAT IS THE POLICE MOTOR TRAFFIC UNIT DOING ON THEIR DAILY JOBS ? THE INCESSANT MOTOR TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS IN GHANA, ALL STEM FROM THE INEFFICIENCY OF THE GHANA POLICE FORCE. CORRUPTION, BRIBERY AND INEFFICIENCY OF THE POLICE ARE THE MAIN CAUSE OF DISRESPECTS FOR OUR TRAFFIC LAWS, BY DRIVERS IN THE COUNTRY. AND ALL OF THESE FACTORS, START RIGHT FROM THE TOP POLICE OFFICIALS. SOME OF THE POLICEMEN, AFTER COLLECTING BRIBES FROM INDISCIPLINED DRIVERS, GO BACK TO THEIR OFFICES AND OFFER SOME OF THEIR SENIORS, PART OF WHAT THEY COLLECT--THE BRIBES, FROM ROAD DISOBEDIENT DRIVERS--TO THEIR SENIOR OFFICERS. IT IS SO WITH THE POLICE FORCE, AS WELL AS CUSTOM OFFICIALS.

As an American who comes to Accra once a year, I amazed that I don’t see more accidents. Is there even driver education or do Ghanaians just show up and get a license? There are no rules, hardly any lights or traffic signs. They have never heard of the word “yield” and incessantly use their horns, which is considered a sign of disrespect in America unless you are in danger of hitting someone. They pull out in front of one another and use their horns to tell someone that “I’m about to cut you off” or “I’m about to turn in front of you.” The people on scooters or motorcycles would get ticketed or killed in America. They ride the center lane between cars and weave in and out of traffic as if they don’t care about their own lives. And they honk their hands to tell cars that they are going to make crazy moves. It is frightening and annoying to someone coming from a place where driving is a privilege and not a right.
