They mine illegally, knowing damn well that they're breaking the law. Will you make the same excuse for petty thieves and armed robbers, that they engage in their criminal conduct because they're hungry? Chiefs are the custodians of lands across Ghana; these chiefs sell the lands to private individuals who in turn resell the lands to galamsey criminals. The issue therefore has nothing to do with chiefs not having the power that they once enjoyed, but rather because some corrupt elements in society are willing to engage in galamsey to gain wealth. The workers in these pits are not the ones who decide to operate galamsey pits, it's greedy politicians, greedy chiefs, greedy business persons, and greedy persons within Ghana's entertainment industry who are the operators of these galamsey pits. Galamswey is a criminal operation, and it must brought down to its knees to save Ghana's rivers, lands and the loss of taxes that the government never collects from these galamsey operators.
