Many Ghanaians will be surprised to learn that our northern neighbors, especially Mali, Burkina and Niger, fully depend on Ghanaian forrest for their timber needs. One only needs to travel from Kumasi to Tamale road to see the number of overloaded articulator trucks carrying timber products and headed to the aforementioned countries. One concerned Ghanaian custom officer informed that these timber export is not requlated and Ghana is not even benefitting or getting any value for this source of deforestation. These foreign articular drivers only pay maximum of GhC100 bribes to custom and police. Ivory Coast and Togo higly regulate their forrest resources and use it for their own benefits but that of Ghana is free for all.
