If not the Asantehene then it could be said that, some if not most Asantes continue to live in the past thinking history started only after the formation of Asante in the early 18th. century and then became static. It was in the interest of the Europeans to allow the Asantes to be powerful because of their geographical location to give them access to the interior for various tropical commodities as well as slaves. Asantehene claims that the Asantes conquered parts of Bono forgetting that it would have been impossible without the arms and ammunition they got from the Europeans.
What happened in the end when the Europeans realized the slave trading was no more necessary? They conquered the Asantes and subjugated them. Can you imagine some Asantes saying in the 21st.century that Asante was not part of Gold Coast that sought independence which was granted in 1957? History is never static! Can Britain go and claim parts of USA? No way!
Berekum fought on the side of the British colonizers during the final war with the Asantes in which the latter was vanquished and their so called empire was dismantled. The British raised Berekum to the Paramountcy not the Asantehene. Why does the Asantehene insist that Berekum must owe allegiance to Asantehene when Berekum is a Bono town which had people living on the land before some Asante garrison warriors settled in the territory. Bono people ought to unite for development because Asantes in the old days practised taxation without representation, as well as, tyranny and other forms of cheating and disrespect in the Bono area which always became a bone of contention. Without mutual respect, times and history will evolve. The Bonos are the majority and the Bono language is dominant in the region so how can Asantehene lay claim to Bono lands in this our 21st century? Will Asantehene accept to go and lay prostrate before King Charles as was once done in the past? I should doubt.
