The National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) in Ghana has a rich history. The concept of national health insurance was initiated by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the country's first president. The scheme gained significant support from the NDC government before the NPP government transformed it into the National Health Insurance Scheme we know today, previously it was known as National Mutual Health Insurance.
