I'm not a medical doctor but I will try to help out on this through my auntie who died only a few days ago in Ghana.
She was 99 years old and had high blood pressure and was diabetic as far as I can remember. But she has outlived all her siblings except the youngest including all the others who far more healthier. She was mainly home educated after Standard 3 old standard and lived a rural life.
This was her answer when I asked her during the funeral of one of her junior sisters;
1. I don't eat salt nor sugar because there is enough of that in the food we eat.
2. I eat everything but more of plantain and cocoyam in my later years. I don't eat processed food as a policy.
3. I don't eat fried fish or meat - except cooked or dried (ie. roasted)
4. I don't drink alcohol.
5. I rest well and sleep early.
6. I visit the doctor for the regular checkups and take my medicines religiously - but I use my judgement and listen to my body more.
7. I have always maintained a proportional body size and low weight.
7. That's it - an ancestor's brief.
We are yet to arrange for a date to sit down for the one-week family gathering to arrange her funeral. May she rest in peace.
PS: I have no registered medical condition yet but I still try to mimic her practical advice. Hope it helps.
