Leftist dynamism was killed by the National Liberation Council (NLC) when it overthrew the Convention Peoples' Party (CPP) in 1966.
NLC and Progress Party led by Professor Kofi Abrefa Busia banned all Marxist literature.
It was a crime punishable by some years of imprisonment if you are seen with the literature of Karl Marx, Friedrich Engles, Vladimir Lenin, Kwame Nkrumah, Ho Chi Ming and Mao Che Tung.
When Colonel Ignatius Acheampong overthrew the Progress Party on 13th January, 1972,the ban on Marxist books were lifted.
Not only that. CPP ministers, members and activists who were imprisoned by NLC and continued to be imprisoned by Kofi Abrefa Busia's Act of parliament "Protective Detention", were all released.
Thus Osei Poku, S.S. Baffour-Awuah and other leftists who were imprisoned by NLC and PP were let free.
Nyan Asante, Kofi Ameko and other members of the CPP hit the ground running with the message of United and Free Africa.
They did not only ended the socialist message at the Ghanaian border, but made sure that they formed an organization African Youth Command, which first Continental President was a Nigerian.
They quickly got link with socialist governments in Cuba, Eastern Europe, North Korea and freedom fighters around the world.
It is on record that China has then withdrawn her support for freedom fighters around the world as she wanted to made U.S. and her NATO military allies comfortable.
General Ignatius Kutu Acheampong's NRC government again made Ghana the Meca for African freedom fighters.
We those who joined the African Youth Command had access to socialist literature from all around the world, especially from the then Soviet Union.
I was privileged to have had access to communist literature on 24th February, 1966 when those literatures were being burnt by the military junta NLC, my late brother who was then a messenger at the Ministry of Information made a dash with some of them in a sack and brought them home.
So I happen to have access to communist literature from China which were not available since from the time of the 1966 coup up to date.
The fact is that the Chinese Communist Party does not sell the socialist ideas outside China.
The membership of the African Youth Command (AYC) enlightened those of us who were ready to fight for the total liberation of Africa.
We had the pleasure of meeting leaders of African liberation fighters from around the continent, like Alfred Nzo, Robert Mugabe, Samora Machel, Amilcar Cabral, among others.
Some of us happen to secure scholarships through the African Youth Command to study in former socialist countries of Eastern Europe.
We returned after the 1981 coup to contribute our windows might to the economy and also impacted knowledge to our students.
The destruction of the left in Ghana was by the PNDC and NDC which brought the search for riches to some of the leaders of the leftish movement in Ghana.
The leftist priests like Kwaku Boateng also returned to evangelism, as preaching of the word of God has become a lucrative business.
There is therefore only a few leftists left in Ghana, most of them in their early 70s and late 60s.
