Footballghana can report that as many as five (5) Ghanaian players are set to suffer pay cuts in the South African Premier Soccer League (PSL) due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

The COVID-19 as it is being called is having a toll on all economies and has not left out the football community.

As it continues to pose negative impacts on the finances of clubs, it is forcing team owners to look for ways to deal with the payment of player wages.

One idea being consensually used in other European countries to save jobs is the player pay cut approach.

The PSL in South Africa is collectively considering towing that way to help clubs survive through the Coronavirus storm.

Meanwhile, the South African Football Players’ Union (Safpu) has asked for an audience with the PSL to have further discussions before a final decision is taken.

Safpu president Thulaganyo Gaoshubelwe in an interview said: “We need to sit down and have a mature discussion. We are open to discussions to understand when these clubs’ bosses say I am struggling and I’m not able to pay salaries”.

“Ok, why are you struggling? What is the cause of your income stream because we don’t know that? So there are quite a number of things that we need to talk about. For us to arrive at a decision we really need to have those serious discussions and that’s very important”, he added, as quoted by SowetanLIVE.

If the pay cut idea is agreed on, the Ghanaian players that will suffer include Richard Ofori (Maritzburg United), Samuel Darpoh (Amazulu), Edwin Gyimah (Black Leopards), Mohammed Anas (Polokwane City) and Nana Dwomoh Akosah-Bempah (Cape Town City FC).
