I don’t believe in beefs – Next Rated Act winner

Soorebia Soorebia

In an industry where ‘lyrical beefs’ thrive, the Ghana music industry has had its fair share of beefs. From the 80s through to the 90s and even now, artistes beef each other, to test the lyrical strength of the other, or so it is presumed, until it gets personal.

Over the years, many musicians have battled it out, famous ones being between Sarkodie and M.anifest, Medikal and Strongman, Shatta Wale and Sarkodie, Samini and Shatta Wale, to mention a few. But are these beefs always necessary?

There have been diverse views on the impact beefs have on the music industry, and while many embrace the fun and entertaining nature of it, others condemn it, and it becomes dirty when people are unable to draw the line between being personal and being lyrical.

One person who does not see the need to beef another just to show prominence in the music scene is the winner of the Next Rated Act at the just ended 3 Music Awards, Soorebia.

In an interview with MzGee monitored by GhanaWeb, the young rapper said he does not believe in beefs.

According to him, he does not believe in fighting each other, because it is possible to build a strong industry where a lot more people could be at the top as best rappers, without anyone feeling more superior than the other.

“I don’t think we should be fighting ourselves…I believe it is possible for five ten rappers to be at the top at the same time and nobody would be taking food off the other person’s plate,” he said.

He explains in the interview on TV3 that even though beefs generate some sort of excitement, it is usually short lived, and when it becomes a personal attack on each other, it is difficult to repair the damage done after the beef.

“Yes it brings a little attention but how long does it take and then it is off, and then the fans have moved on to other things and the energy between you and whoever you were fighting will never be the same. Imagine of you had not fought, what you could achieve together.

So if it is staged and you gain something out of it kudos to you, but sometimes even when it is staged someone can over-step and say stuff that could really hurt you”, he added.
