He is nothing but an armchair critic of those working hard to make life meaningful, and whenever he meets someone wiser and more informed than himself, like Lydia, he cries foul and claims to be an elder who must be respected.

Maybe nobody taught him that if you choose to play with children your wisdom never exceeds their best judgement.
