Coughing During Sex Can Be Dangerous

Kulungugu (U/E), Jan. 28, GNA- A 33-year-old man from Kulungugu in the Bawku East District, who butchered his nursing wife to death for allegedly being the cause of his insanity, has been placed in prison custody by the Bawku police.

Fatau Kuti was alleged to have used a machete to inflict four deep cuts on the face and right wrist of Rahinatu Sumaila who is nursing a four-month old baby while she was asleep at dawn last Wednesday. He also attempted to kill his own brother after the act but was overpowered after the brother shouted for members of the family to come to his rescue.

Briefing the GNA, a family source said Kuti complained about six years ago that while the couple was having sex, his wife coughed on him, which according to custom is perceived to be a bad omen.

The source stated that this led to frequent sickness and strange behaviour on the part of Kuti anytime he ate the wife's food. He said the couple had been married for the past seven years and have four children including the four-month-old baby. "They have been having frequent quarrels due to Kuti's unstable condition till the unfortunate dawn incident."

The source said Kuti had wanted to seek divorce but this was constantly objected to by the family. He therefore consulted a soothsayer who asked him to bring along his wife but the wife refused to go, thus heightening Kuti's suspicion about her.

He said after eating dinner prepared by his wife that fateful night, Kuti started behaving unusually before taking the machete to butcher his wife.

The Bawku district crime officer, ASP Paul Eklo, when contacted, confirmed the incident adding that when the police got to the scene the suspect was tied to a tree in front of the house while the body of the wife lay on a bed in a pool of blood.

He said the body was conveyed to the Bawku hospital where autopsy was conducted before it was released to her family for burial.
