  As technology improved and women did not need them to hold tampons anymore, they have become ornaments of beauty at times defining the quality of the woman from the quality of the Beads. Remember the Twi proverb "Ahenepa nkasa"
  
  It also over time because of its proximity to the female genitalia and the buttocks (revered by Ghanaian Men) have been used as precursors of sexual attraction and sexuality
  
  The Beads play a significant role in the Ghanaian Culture and have taken on different meanings to different people. Their quality and presentation have changed over time and can be worn by any age group including newborns as part of family/tribal identity
  
  In certain cultures the beads also play a significant part in the spiritual protection on the individual wearing it based on his spiritual orientation
