According to Bradt’s Tourist Guide on Ghana (and I am a proud co-writer of Bradt’s Tourist Guide on Ghana), Ghanaians are the friendliest people in Africa.
But experiences shared by Dutch, Belgium and French tourists who applied for a Visa for Ghana have complete different experiences. These experiences are so bad that I am sure some people decide not to visit our wonderful country.
I am originally Dutch so let me concentrate on the situation in Ghana’s Embassy in the Netherlands Where my, out spoken friend, Ambassador Dr. Tony Aidoo is Ghana’s Ambassador.
Please Ambassador don’t take it personal but as a friendly advice to improve upon the situation.
Most of the problems and rudeness from our Ghanaian staff at the embassy comes forth out of not understanding the culture of the people who are citizens of the first Republic in the world. The Dutch never respected order and commands from above without understanding the reason why. This made them on one hand some of the most flexible and open minded and outside the box thinking people but left on the other side with an image of being rude.
The fact that staff at a representation of one of the most friendliest people, not only in Africa but of the world means that they haven’t taken their time to understand and work with this Dutch cultural aspect.
In the Netherland a child can tell his father is wrong, when his father is wrong. In the Netherlands when a minister tries to jump the queue in a supermarket the rest of the queue will protest and even add “who do you think you are”, in the Netherlands a police officer stopping you is first asked “why are you stopping me, what have I done”. That doesn’t mean Dutch people don’t respect but it means that respect in the Netherlands is a complete different thing than in the Ghana.
To Dutch people a diplomat is just a human being like anybody else, and I know especially for Dr. Tony Aidoo: in Ghana a Doctor’s title owes great respect in our society, but in the Netherlands you are just a normal human being like everybody else (Not in Germany where tittles are much more respected).
Dutch people respect in a different way than Ghanaians. Bringing food to your father, shifting cars for a minister’s car to pass, respecting a person in uniform, are normal Ghanaian forms of respect, but “weird” to most Dutch people.
I have worked with 3 ambassadors, 4 Minister Counselors and just as many Consuls at the Visa departments and can’t say anything else that all staff at the Ghana Embassy has always treated me in the most respectful way, including a receptionist who has appeared several times on websites as being the rudest person in the Embassy.
Also to all my Dutch friends don’t forget people working in offices especially embassies in Ghana are somebody! They are respected by friends and family and fellow Ghanaians because of being a diplomat!
To all Dutch people I will explain the way Ghanaian Diplomats would have been approached in Ghana:
You, visiting the Embassy dress up for your visit, make sure you shower, brush your teeth shine your shoes and put on your best clothes. You enter the Embassy in head in hand style, greet the receptionist in the friendliest way possible and tell him you are inquiring where to get a Visa.
The receptionist will correctly but not over friendly direct the person to the waiting room where he/she will wait until called without complaining! When the person is called he will go to the officer handling his Visa and even when he/she is being told that the information is not completed to go home to complete the application and come back next time following he will follow the order and will show respect towards the staff of the Embassy.
Now imagine what people at the embassy see/hear when the average Dutch person, majority young people experience when a Dutch person comes in:
Somebody (in summer) who comes in shorts (clothing which is in Ghana for school children and beachwear) unshaven, no belt in his shorts, hair not combed not asking but telling the staff of the embassy: “I am coming for my Visa” whilst at the same time on the phone with somebody else.
The Dutch often doesn’t realize that he has broken almost all cultural rules of the person opposite him and has immediately set the tone of the rest of his visa application stay at the embassy. In the waiting room he is complaining that everything takes very long and going back to the reception asking when it’s his turn. But the problem really starts when he/she has forgotten a document and has to come back.
The ‘what the Fc&*’ (“+X and other “friendly” words to the staff are uncountable and from there on everything gets worse.
So that is the Dutch part, let’s get to the Ghanaian part:
Firstly, you are representing the friendliest country in Africa, and each of you is an ambassador to our tourist industry who is the fourth income carrier in our country. Your behavior towards these tourists can destroy the image of Ghana as the friendliest country and seriously damage our national income from tourism! Just keep that always in the back of your mind.
Secondly you have not been sent to the Netherlands to create a behavior change to Dutch people!
Thirdly, the golden rule the customer is always right (even if he/she is obviously wrong), nothing to do with culture just with normal sales techniques.
Whenever you are sent to a foreign country try to (like me in Ghana, but I admit it’s not easy) study the culture and cultural behavior of the people in the country you are going to work, this will help you in your job.
Last but not least insults in the Netherlands are not like in Ghana to take personal (see my previous article).
The funny, or sad, thing is that perfect integrated Ghanaians who changed their nationality to the Dutch nationality adapted so well that they have become as rude as the Dutch, that’s what I call perfect integration.
The reason I am writing this article is that my cousin, who I haven’t seen in 20 years is coming to visit me in Ghana. She has been a bank employee who started at the counter climbed up to become a manager of the same bank and has been involved in customer care for over 30 years. She complained to me and said if “it wasn’t for you I wouldn’t have come!”
To all embassy staff, please forgive my people, and all the staff who is actually friendly to everybody (and they are the majority) sorry you are not included.
