just look at the definition for animal, alligator and reptile
Animals are multicellular, eukaryotic organisms of the kingdom Animalia. All animals are motile, meaning they can move spontaneously and independently, at some point in their lives
An alligator is a crocodilian in the genus Alligator of the family Alligatoridae. The two living species are the American alligator and the Chinese alligator. In addition, several extinct species of alligator are known from fossil remains
Reptiles, the class Reptilia, are an evolutionary grade of animals, comprising today's turtles, crocodilians, snakes, lizards and tuatara.

I have many "mampans" in my backyard at South Legon. They are not harmful, they don't bite, they only defend themselves with their tails against chickens and run with the approach of humans. Some call it alligator but it's not correct. Perhaps I should also try and grab national attention by telling my daily"ordeal" with alligators.
