Daddy Lumba, "I am 50 and still fit"

Legendary Hi-life Singer Charles Kwadwo Ofosu, popularly known as DL (Daddy Lumba) has assured Ghanaians that he is fit enough to appear on all the numerous shows he has been billed to perform on within the next few weeks through to the Christmas festivities.

DL disclosed this when he mounted the stage at the just ended maiden edition of Television Awards Ghana on Friday October 10, 2014 at the National Theatre.

The 'Yen tie obia' hitmaker came on stage to meet a charged waiting crowd already standing to dance to his classic tunes.

He thanked God Almighty for keeping him alive and everybody present for coming. He also congratulated all nominees of the awards saying “I want you to know you are all winners."

What perhaps attracted the loudest cheer from the crowd was when he said “I am happy to say that I am 50 and still fit. I am 50 and still fit”, he emphasized as he waved his hands.

He dropped his hit song, 'Yene wo sre kwa' and got the crowd dancing and singing along but what shook the very foundation of the National Theatre was when he performed the sensational 'Yen tie obia' hit song which was what everybody was waiting for.

The song that is perhaps the biggest hit yet in 2014 had everybody singing and screaming from beginning to end.

DL, who mimed his songs, performed three songs and ended his performance with “Yen tie obia”. He revealed that his performance was just a teaser and prelude to an elaborate performance with a live band on Christmas Eve with the music maestro Kojo Antwi on the same stage.

“Watch out for me and Kojo Antwi on 24th December on this same stage," he disclosed before he exited the stage.

Another performance on the night was by silky-voiced Singer Kwabena Kwabena who treated the ladies to a repertoire of his love songs including the controversial 'Adult Music'.

He gave a good account of himself as always and gave the patrons a performance worth their money.

Actress and Comedian, Valentina Nana Agyiewaa aka Afia Schwarzenegger also got the audience laughing with her antics and funny comments when she came on stage, as well as Kwame Dzokoto.

KSM was also billed to perform and re-enact some of his passed sold out shows including 'The Saga of the Returnee', 'Afia Srebuo' among others but for some reason he was not seen on stage or anywhere close to the auditorium.

MCs for the night DKB and Amanda Jissih was a perfect per for the show. They held the show and ran it with so much ease and a great sense of humour.

Even when there were technical challenges at some point, they made fun of each and made the crowd feel everything was under control.

Some technical hitches almost affect the beauty of the show. For instance, the unnecessary breaks between award presentations made the show very boring.

When the audience has to sit for about 2 to 5 minutes in between awards presentations and the stage is always left idle all that while.

Another hitch was when the video playback of the various nominations for some reason couldn't play anymore in the middle of the event.

So Amanda had to improvise quickly and mention the nominees’ one after the other before the winner is announced by the award presenter.

Positioning of the live band set in front of the stage at the left side of the auditorium also posed problems for people seated around that area.

The band blocked their view and made it almost impossible to have a complete view of the stage.

All in all, it was good a show by all standards with great stage set design, good sound and lights.

Build up to the main event was commendable with numerous open faculty sittings, board of trustee's meeting and press conferences, making the process very transparent right from the onset.

Eventually their credibility was evident during the main event, when over six television channels including, GTV, Homebase TV, Royal TV, Afrostar TV, E-TV Ghana among others to take the risk of telecasting the maiden edition of awards event live.

They can only improve and get better every year.
