In the Ghanaian academic system, the student with good memory , who can reproduce ditto for the teacher/ lecturer is considered good. Critical thinking is not a prority. With the English language, what we learn at the primary level dictates what we write and most of all what and how we speak English. As we climb the academic ladder, we improve our vocabulary no doubt. For those of us who went to 'cyto' at Adiembra near Sekondi in the 1970's , we have tried but we still have a long way to go. I have come across many graduates who speak and write bad English. Unfortunately, they can't write their native language too.
